Bharati Mukherjee: Her Life and Works More on This Story: Select One Brief Summary of the Air India Trial Mukherjee Interview Transcript Full Archive Bharati Mukherjee was born in Calcutta in 1940, the second of three daughters born to Bengali-speaking, Hindu Brahmin parents. She lived in a house crowded with 40 or 50 relatives until she was eight, when her father's career brought the family to live in London for several years. After getting her B.A. from the University of Calcutta in 1959 and her M.A. in English and Ancient Indian Culture from the University of Baroda in 1961, she traveled to the United States for the first time. As she describes it: I flew into a small airport surrounded by cornfields and pastures, ready to carry out the two commands my father had written out for me the night before I left Calcutta: Spend two years studying creative writing at the Iowa Writers' Workshop, then come back home and marry the bridegroom he selected for me from our caste and class. Mukherjee found herself changed by her experience at the University of Iowa, her first coeducational experience. She fell in love with Canadian writer Clark Blaise, a fellow student, and married him impulsively during her lunch break after only two weeks of courtship. Any plans to return to India after finishing school were rewritten in that moment. Mukherjee immigrated to Canada with her husband after completing her M.F.A. and then her Ph.D. in English and comparative literature from the University of Iowa. She became a naturalized Canadian citizen in 1972, but chose to leave Canada with her husband and two sons in 1980 to move to the United States. She describes her identity as a naturalized U.S. citizen in

Transcript: Bill Moyers Interviews Bharati Mukherjee More on This Story: Select One Air India Trial
[Note: It has come to NOW's attention that an editing error in our interview with Ms. Mukherjee has resulted in some misunderstanding and confusion. A statement edited inaccurately in NOW's interview with Ms. Mukherjee implies that she believes that Sikhs were involved in fundraising activities in support of the terrorism activities of 9/11. This statement is not only untrue, but it is not one that Ms. Mukherjee made or meant to suggest. NOW regrets this error and has corrected it in the transcript below.] MOYERS: You and your husband spent over a year investigating that tragedy, and produced this book: THE SORROW AND THE TERROR: THE HAUNTING LEGACY OF AIR INDIA TRAGEDY. I think of you, of course, as the novelist you are. And I've read some of your essays. I don't think of you, or Clark, your husband, as a investigative journalist. Why did you spend so much time on this? MUKHERJEE: I had no idea that the book would turn out to be a detective book about who actually financed the bombing, and who were members of the five-member terrorist cell that actually pulled it off? But it was meant to be simply about the bereaved.

It was there that she met Canadian writer Clark Blaise . The couple have been married since , and they have two sons. Mukherjee's stories revolve around the culture clash experienced by Indians who have emigrated to North America but still have difficulty acculturating . For example, in "A Father" (from her collection Darkness ), a religious Hindu 's hopes for a harmonious family life are shattered when he learns that his grown-up but still single daughter has had artificial insemination because she wants a baby but rejects men. In "The Lady from Lucknow " (in the same volume), the bored wife of an Indian academic adapts to the American way of life by committing

Jasmine - Identity In Exile Jermone Beaty and Paul Hunter in their book, New Worlds of Literature , say Thinking of home is often accompanied by nostalgia the absence or loss of loved ones, the remoteness of the home place we are cut off from our childhood home are Exiles. And the rest of us can perhaps understand, that we are all "exiles" from our past, our childhood, that universal "home" (1) The state of exile, a sense of loss, the pain of separation and disorientation makes Bharati Mukherjee’s novel "Jasmine" a quest for identity in an alien land. Jasmine, the protagonist of the novel, undergoes several transformations during her journey of life in America, from Jyoti to Jasmine to Jane, and often experiences a deep sense of estrangement resulting in a fluid state of identity. This journey becomes a tale of moral courage, a search for self-awareness and self-assertion. Uprooted from her native land India, Jyoti does her best to introduce herself into the new and alien society as an "immigrant"; the culmination finally indicated in Jasmine’s pregnancy with the child of a white man - Bud.

Bharati Mukherjee finds stories of transformation in immigrant journeys
John Habich, Star Tribune March 24, 2002 MUKVAR B harati Mukherjee's father forbade her to live in a coed dormitory when she left to study writing at the University of Iowa in 1961. She was a Bengali Brahmin, raised to be subservient in a male-centered culture of arranged marriages. Two years later, she sent a telegram to Calcutta, notifying her parents that she had wed a fellow student on her lunch hour. The epochal distance between her upbringing in India and her adulthood as a prize-winning American writer fills her new novel, "Desirable Daughters," the latest selection of the Talking Volumes book club sponsored by the Star Tribune, Minnesota Public Radio and the Loft Literary Center. In it, Mukherjee lays out the lives of three sisters in a family much like her own: bright, upper-class beauties who follow their sundry dreams all over the map. Mukherjee, 61, has written before of the collision of cultures in her novels "Jasmine" and "The Tiger's Daughter," and in "The Middleman and Other Stories," which won the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1988
