All the poetry published by Muir in his lifetime is collected here in this volume, plus those works published after his death and a number of poems and versions of poems left out of previous collections. The poems are arranged, where appropriate, in sections representing the separate volumes of verse published by Muir himself, with additional poems printed in appendices. Professor Butter's notes identify when each of Muir's poems were written, and where. He quotes earlier versions and Muir's own comments, in letters and notebooks, on his poetry, its genesis and meaning. Not included are Muir's juvenilia and some occasional verses and translations, although these are all listed. Peter Butter was Regius Professor of English at Glasgow University until 1986. He wrote a life of Muir ( Edwin Muir: Man and Poet 1966), and edited selections of his letters (1974) and of his uncollected essays and reviews (

The twelve papers in this volume were delivered at the Edwin Muir Centenary Conference 1987, held at St Andrews in Scotland in June of that year. Three themes emerged strongly at the confernce. The first was the significance of Edwin Muir's acquaintance with European literature and his debt in particular to contemporary German poetry. Obviously this was related to his work as a translator, and hence the second point, the literary importance of Muir's wife Willa. Her support for Edwin, her collaboration with him in translation and her own achievement as a writer received new emphasis. Thirdly, the conference confronted the enigmatic connection in Muir's work between the timeless and the particular, his universal themes and his own historical and literary background. These three aspects of Muir and his work are amply represented in the essays collected here. They are arranged in such a way as to move from biographical considerations to questions of literary influence and outlook, with Professor Butter's reappraisal of Willa Muir as centre and pivot. Framing the whole are the papers of Dr Bruce and Professor Wiseman, in which, as in June 1987, these leaders in the study and appreciation of the poet attempt to express the essence of Muir's achievement and the urgency of his message for us all today.

Now living in Manhattan through September 11th, the idea of a biological warfare catastrophe seems no longer confined to the pages of science fiction novels. The contrast between the purity of the horses and the corruption of mechanized 'civilization' has a strong elegiac quality. Simon Pereira Shorey Biography: See Poem #1233 Do you Yahoo!? Now as noted by the person who posted it, it is overlaid with other connotations, ecological as well as apocolyptic. An excerpt from was set as a text in an English exam when I was 11 and it was so resonant that it made me seek out the whole text and, subsequently, more of Muir's work. My favourite of his, incidentally, is "Transmutation", which would make a fine addition to this excellent site, sometime. Incidentally, as if being a fine poet wasn't enough, it is Muir we must thank for his work in being a tireless champion of Kafka in the West. Top Man!

During the early 1920s he traveled on the Continent, supporting himself chiefly with contributions to the Freeman. At the age of 35 he turned to writing poetry, producing such collections as Chorus of the Newly Dead (1926) and The Labyrinth (1949). However, it was not until his Collected Poems appeared in 1952 that Muir achieved recognition. A visionary poet, he sought in his personal, often dreamlike verse to understand the meaning of the spiritual universe. Muir is also well known as a literary critic.
