Paul Delvaux: The Village of the Mermaids Oil on canvas, 1942 Lisel Mueller Who is that man in black, walking
away from us into the distance?
The painter, they say, took a long time
finding his vision of the world. The mermaids, if that is what they are
under their full-length skirts,
sit facing each other
all down the street, more of an alley,
in front of their gray row houses.
They all look the same, like a fair-haired
order of nuns, or like prostitutes
with chaste, identical faces. How calm they are, with their vacant eyes, their hands in laps that betray nothing. Only one has scales on her dusky dress. It is 1942; it is Europe, and nothing fits. The one familiar figure is the man in black approaching the sea, and he is small and walking away from us.

  • Why do all stories share common elements? Materials:
  • Why We Tell Stories " by Lisel Mueller
  • Cross-Cultural Dialogue

    Mini-Lesson:
  • You might begin the workshop by reading Lisel Mueller’s poem “ Why We Tell Stories ” once again. Afterward, try to connect today’s topic, “stories,” to the topic of the last reading workshop, “knowing context.” For example, you might say:
“I like the way Lisel Mueller ends this poem: ‘and though we listen only/ haphazardly, with one ear/we will begin our story with the word and.’ To me, this passage refers to how we all are a part of a continuing story—a story that depends upon all those who lived before us and all those who will live after us: We begin our stories with the word ‘and.’ “During our last workshop, we defined context as ‘interrelated conditions in which something exists or occurs.’ We also looked at the Peace Corps writers themselves, and discovered that knowing the context of their writing could deepen our understanding of their work. Stories also have a context. As Lisel Mueller shows us in this poem, all stories exist within a storytelling tradition.”

    Pulitzer for poetry ends obscurity
Star of neglected art is thrust into the spotlight
By Lindsey Tanner, Associated Press writer
Lisel Mueller is a shining star in a forgotten galaxy. You won't see her name on any marquee; her sad-eyed face lined with the wisdom and burdens of age would blend into any crowd.
But her words, painstakingly pulled from her heart, brighten the pages of books on dusty shelves in neglected corners of libraries and bookstores.
Lisel Mueller is a poet, a profession she politely calls "a minority art." One colleague more bluntly declares it "the dog meat of the art world."
At exactly 2:15 p.m. on April 8, she was thrust into the spotlight.
A shrill telephone ring jarred the tranquillity of Ms. Mueller's Lake Forest, Ill., cottage beyond a dead-end road in horse country north of Chicago. A Western Union operator read a two-line telegram from Columbia University: "You were awarded the Pulitzer poetry prize today. Congratulations."
"It's nice to deliver good news for a change," the operator added.
It took more than 30 years for a measure of fame to find Ms. Mueller, 73, who published her first poetry book in 1965.
