About Ruth Lilly and the 2003 Prize . . . American poetry has no greater friend than RUTH LILLY. Over many years and in many ways, it has been blessed by her personal generosity. In 1985 she endowed the Ruth Lilly Professorship in Poetry at Indiana University. In 1989 she created two Ruth Lilly Fellowships, for $15,000 each, given annually by the Poetry Foundation to undergraduate or graduate students selected through a national competition. In 2001 her lifetime engagement with poetry culminated in a magnificent bequest which will enable the Poetry Foundation to promote, in perpetuity, a vigorous presence for poetry in our culture.

Bibliography Download the PDF Introduction “Blood Oranges” comes from Second Language , Lisel Mueller’s fourth book of poetry. In this poem, one sees subjects that have interested Mueller throughout her career, most notably the Holocaust in Hitler’s Germany and her fascination with poetry’s way of capturing the physical world so concretely that reality’s horrors cannot be ignored. An interesting aspect of this poem is that it presents Nazi Germany, from which Mueller’s family fled when she was young, as a sort of safe haven, a place where a child could live comfortably in ignorance of the brutality around her. The abusive political system that Mueller looks back on here is that of Spain in 1936, where, on August 19, the famed poet and playwright Federico García Lorca was executed by Fascist rebels. García Lorca was internationally famous for his sympathetic writings about the poor common people of Spain, especially the Andalusian gypsies. “Blood Oranges” describes Mueller as a child, living in Germany and reading acceptably pleasant German poetry from long in the past, oblivious to the Spanish political situation and unaware of the sheer greatness of the poet who was being murdered at the same time. There is a painful irony in the fact that, as García Lorca was being killed, the young girl was savoring the sweetness of oranges from Spain that are called “blood oranges.” Modern readers are able to add to this scene another layer, with the knowledge that the Fascist rebels in the Spanish Civil War were supported by Adolph Hitler and that Hitler would in a short time wield similar control over Germany, encouraging mob action against Jews and blacks, homosexuals and gypsies.

The Exhibit by Lisel Mueller
Jump to: Introduction Author Biography Poem Text Summary and Analysis Themes Historical Context Critical Overview Criticism Media Adaptations Compare and Contrast Topics for Further Study What Do I Read Next? Bibliography Download the PDF Introduction "The Exhibit" (contained in Lisel Mueller's collection Second Language [1986]) blends history and 1986 mythology to express the lingering grief and denial that still haunt an elderly man who survived being a prisoner of war. Using the unicorn metaphor, the poet shows how the horrible public event of world war has a lasting detrimental effect on private life and how our present lives are determined and shaped by the past. Mueller often writes autobiographical poems which include members of her family, and "The Exhibit" is about an uncle living in East Germany many years after the world wars of the twentieth century. The poem does not specify whether the uncle was a prisoner during the first or second world war, but his age could well place him in WWI. We know, however, that Lisel Mueller's own life was directly affected by WWII and that many of her poems stem from the events of the Holocaust. Regardless of which world war is the reference here, the meaning is the same—war takes its toll not only on the body, but on the mind, leaving decades of appalling memories for survivors and often causing them to turn to imagination and myth for comfort.

New and Selected Poems
Published by LSU Press/BR in 1996
While writing to a friend of mine about Tolkien's work recently, I quoted Lisel Mueller, saying Tolkien only "wanted to write a tale to tremble by." That quote is from Mueller's poem about Mary Shelley (see below) which appeared in the Virginia Quarterly Review way back in the summer of 1976. Mary Shelley was a Tolkien in her time and Mueller does a magnificent job encapsulating Mary and Percy Bysshe Shelley's life. When her book "Alive Together" won a Pulitzer Prize, I bought a copy immediately, especially pleased that it had been published by my alma mater's press. I read a few poems back then and finished reading the others yesterday. Here is the title poem which speaks eloquently to you and me, Dear Reader, who, at the time I type these words on my COMPAQ keyboard, are alive together. (If you haven’t been born yet, when you are and grow up to be a reader, perhaps we will yet be alive together.) Look around you at those with whom you are alive together and consider what a marvel it is to be alive together with them . . . [page 84, 85] ALIVE TOGETHER

Many poets have used multiplicity of meaning to lend ambiguity (and hopefully depth) to their poems, but rarely has the multiplicity itself been the subject of a poem. The danger here is that the poem descends into mere boring repetition, a shopping list of definitions. Fortunately for us, Ms Mueller avoids the pitfall adroitly, with unexpected metaphors ("rabbinical snow" is my favourite), literary and historical references, and (at the very end) an unabashed appeal to nostalgia. Notice how the descriptions become steadily more allusive as the poem goes on; this adds to the impact of what would otherwise have been a rather predictable ending. thomas. PS. The LINGUIST mailing list has this to say about the number of words meaning 'snow' in various Eskimo languages: http://www.ling.ed.ac.uk/linguist/issues/5/5-1239.html

Though half of the book is reprints of poems from Mueller's first book 'Dependencies,' this is a must-have for what follows: essays and interviews with Mueller that are unavailable anywhere else. Mueller, the 1997 Pulitzer Prize winner is truly an undiscovered treasure, and a master craftswoman of the "vers libre" poem. Among other things, she discusses syntax, diction, linguistics, memory, exile, the writing life, and includes a dynamic essay on the process of revision.

I am amazed by her power. In her hands, words spring to life and life springs to words. Her mind plants the living experience in a kiss on the hand and flings it to her audience like affectionate royalty waving to an attentive crowd. She was born in Hamburg, Germany and the "Curriculum Vitae" poem in this volume beautifully articulates her immigration to the United States and her life here.
