For many years, Farley Mowat has written of the lands, seas and peoples of the Far North with humor, understanding and compassion. Born in Belleville, Ontario in 1921, Mowat grew up in Belleville, Trenton, Windsor, Saskatoon, Toronto and Richmond Hill as his librarian father moved a household that included a miniature menagerie around the country. During World War II Mowat served in the army, entering as a private and emerging with the rank of captain. Following his discharge, Mowat renewed his interest in the Canadian Arctic, an area he had first visited as a young man with an ornithologist uncle. He began writing for his living in 1949 after spending two years in the Arctic. Since 1949 he has lived in or visited almost every part of Canada and many other lands, including the distant regions of Siberia. He has said of himself, "I am a Northern Man . . . I like to think I am a reincarnation of the Norse saga men and, like them, my chief concern is with the tales of men, and other animals, living under conditions of natural adversity." Volume 20 Number 6
1992 November
Have lunch with one of Canada 's most famous authors for both adults and children, join in the conversation on writing and story-telling, and get a taste of his newest book, My Father's Son. We met in a small cafe in downtown Toronto, about a block from Union Stationand I can now say that I've done "the lunch thing" with Farley Mowat. You may not be impressed, but I sure was, because, you see, I grew up with Mutt, the Owls, Happy Adventure , and the wolves. Meeting the man who had actually lived (and written about) all these stories was exciting. We ate lunch and talked about families (he and Claire split their year between a farm in Cape Breton and Port Hope, Ontario); about dogs (two of their dogs "perished" (his word, not mine) last year; they now have just the one); and about writing (specifically, his new book, My Father's Son My Father's Son is Mowat's thirty-first book and his third look back at World War II, following and And No Birds Sang and The Regiment . The book is a collection of letters written from 1943 to 1945 between Farley and his parents, Angus and Helen.

The descendants of the whale forefathers now number about a hundred species which man, the great cataloguer, has divided into the families of the toothed and the baleen whales. Why, if he is the most advanced of beings, has he become a threat to the survival of all life on earth? Ibid. The living whale is something else. . . We were all . . . made sharply aware that these creatures were paragons of grace who had achieved a harmonious relationship to the world of waters such as man will never know in air or on the land, in nature or in art. "C'est à Terre-Neuve que tout commence : Fleur de passion, la goélette de ses rêves, là, devant lui, solide, le vrai bateau de pêche de 9,50 m, le vieux gréement dont rêvent tous les marins ! Coup de foudre. Début d'un roman de mer ? Non : d'un roman d'amour. Et de haine. Avec la plus capricieuse, la plus infidèle, la plus vacharde des maîtresses. - Book Review, by Farley Mowat, Robert Frankenberg (Illustrator)

The adventures of two owls who shake up an entire neighborhood and turn a house topsy-turvy.
Inside Flap Copy
Every child needs to have a pet. No one could argue with that.
But what happens when your pet is an owl, and your owl is terrorizing the neighbourhood? In Farley Mowat?s exciting children?s story, a young boy?s pet menagerie ? which includes crows, magpies, gophers and a dog ? grows out of control with the addition of two cantankerous pet owls. The story of how Wol and Weeps turn the whole town upside down is warm, funny, and bursting with adventure and suspense. Controversial and best-selling – Farley Mowat is a Canadian icon. His books, stories of animals, nature and native people, are available in over 20 languages in more than 40 countries.
Farley Mowat began his school days in Trenton and Belleville. His parents Angus and Helen (Thomson) Mowat were both born and raised in Trenton. Angus’s father owned a hardware store and Helen’s father was manager of the Molson’s Bank. Farley recounts his early adventures in Born Naked (1993) where he tells of beginning school at Dufferin Avenue Public School in Trenton in 1927. Angus accepted a position at Corby Library in Belleville during the summer of 1928 and Farley then attended Queen Alexandra School, now the office of the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board. The Mowats lived on the second floor of Corby Library until May of 1930, when Angus’s job as a librarian took them to Windsor and later, the Prairies.
During World War II, Farley was an infantry officer with the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment and served in Sicily and North West Europe. After the war he spent two years in the Arctic, then received his Bachelor’s degree at the University of Toronto. Mowat’s first book, People of the Deer (1952), is a critical look at the treatment of the Inuit people by government officials. Farley’s successful and often controversial writing career spans almost 50 years. Never Cry Wolf (1963), his account of life with a pack of wolves, was made into a Disney movie in 1983.
