Aus dem Englischen und mit einem Nachwort von Pieke Biermann. Nach siebenundzwanzig Jahren im Knast will Socrates Fortlow wieder ein ordentlicher Mensch werden. Ausgerechnet in South Central, L.A..

Walter Mosley
Birth: January 12, 1952 in Los Angeles, California, United States
Nationality: American
Occupation: writer
Source: Newsmakers , Issue 4. Gale Group, 2003. Walter Mosley has broken new ground as a mystery writer by incorporating issues of race into novels that stand on their own as gripping detective fiction. His novels are all written from an African-American perspective. He has also branched out into the areas of science fiction and social commentary. Mosley was born in southeastern Los Angeles in 1952 and grew up in Watts and the Pico-Fairfax district. His father was an African American from the deep South, and his mother a white woman of Jewish descent whose family emigrated from Eastern Europe. This unique African American/Jewish heritage made prejudice a major topic in the household. An only child, Mosley grew up hearing about the woes of life for African Americans in the South, as well as the horrors of anti-Semitism across the Atlantic. However, he was also regaled by colorful accounts of partying and carrying on among his African-American relatives, along with tales of czars in old Russia. Mosley settled down into a career as a computer programmer in the 1980s, but his work left him unfulfilled. Meanwhile, he read voraciously, including mysteries by Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, and Ross MacDonald, and existential novels such as

Paris Minton is a mild middle-aged black man who has finally been able to see his dreams come true. He has rented a small storefront in the Watts area in Los Angeles and opened a book store. He discovered that the city libraries regularly gave away old books and magazines. He sought out he head librararian who, of course treated him like dirt, showing him into the library and then explaining to him that he would never be able to set foot in that place in his life. But, Paris was able to get a letter proving that the materials from the library were given to him and were his rightful property, not stolen. In Watts, the police would quickly roust him out and throw him in jail if he could not prove he did not steal the books and magazines.
Paris had a good thing going. He wasn't getting rich, but he was happy doing what he always wanted to do, sell books and spend the day reading them when he wasn't selling them. It was a great life. That is it was great until Elana Love stumbled into his shop running away from her angry boyfriend. It seems she has a valuable bearer bond that her boyfriend had stolen, and she had, in turn, stolen from him. Paris hid her and took a beating from the boyfriend. He ran with Elana and was able to get away in a frightening car-chase. That night he slept with Elana and the experience was great, but Elana slipped him a knockout drug and he awoke to a missing car and all of his money missing as well.

96. Review: Walkin’ The Dog
Walkin’ the Dog walter mosley Little Brown, $24.95. Put another way, for a mystery writer, walter mosley has written two very fine short story collections.

Walter Mosley
Little Brown, $24.95 by Peter McCarthy In his absorbing 1998 short story collection always outnumbered, always outgunned signals the welcome return of Socrates as well as a chance for readers to observe one of the finer neo-noir stylists continuing to explore less conventional terrain. Mosley’s Easy Rawlins books succeeded for a number of reasons, not the least of which being his compelling black PI, Ezekiel "Easy" Rawlins. But, like most writers working in the mystery genre, Mosley’s eye never strayed far from his bread and butter: plot. Here, though, he chooses once again to place Socrates in a series of interconnected short stories with, essentially, no plot. So what has Mosley done without his engine? Well, he’s done something at once predictable and startlingly original: he’s gone high concept (no stretch for a mystery writer) but without the quest. There’s no devil in a blue dress here. More surprisingly, Mosley’s gone high-minded, establishing Socrates Fortlow as the walking embodiment of the Socrates–he of the "method" and Plato’s Dialogues always outnumbered, always outgunned
