Author Walter Mosley is a native of Los Angeles, the setting for his Easy Rawlins mystery series. His first novel, Devil in a Blue Dress , received immediate acclaim in 1990 and was the winner of the Shamus Award for Best First P.I. Novel from The Private Eye Writers of America. It also became a major motion picture staring Denzel Washington and Jennifer Beals. Other books in the series include A Red Death White Butterfly , and Black Betty During the 1992 Presidential campaign then-candidate Bill Clinton, an avid reader of mysteries, revealed that the Easy Rawlins series was his favorite. On this audio program, Mr. Mosley discusses the importance of black male heroes in literature and illustrates his analysis by reading one of his short stories featuring his new character, Socrates Fortlow.

"The Man in My Basement "
(reviewed by Hagen Baye APR 23, 2004)
Charles Blakey, the principal character in Walter Mosley's fascinating new novel, The Man in my Basement , is a 33-year-old unemployed black man, living alone in a three-story 200-year-old house in Sag Harbor, NY, which his family has owned for at least seven generations. His ancestors, arriving perhaps as early as 1742, are among the original settlers of the long-standing black community that established itself in eastern Long Island. The Blakey's, Charles's father's people, came over as indentured servants who earned their freedom. On his mother's side, the Dodd's are said to have come over directly from Africa as free people. It is a matter of great pride that they were never anyone's slaves. Charles Blakey is a disgrace to his family's name. He is on the verge of losing the ancestral house and becoming homeless due to his inability to keep up with his mortgage payments. His predicament stems from having been fired from his job at a local bank because of "petty embezzlement." His former employer, feeling personally betrayed by Charles, gets him blacklisted from getting any other work in his small town. He can't even get a construction job from a fellow whose grandfather's first job came through Blakey's family and despite two of the fellow's siblings having been delivered by Charles's grandmother. The good will of his respected family did not accrue to his benefit, it is as if he has no connection with his forebears.

"Futureland : Nine Stories of an Imminent World"
Ptolemy Bent is a genius. By state law he must be tested and given a proper education, ideally at the Elite Education Group, but his Uncle Chill says no way is he sending him to an institution. Chill dreams freedom and knows that the only way for his people to truly get it is by educating this child at home with his family, not by "sendin' Popo away to some white man's idea of what smart and good is. All they do is wanna turn him against hisself." He has until the child turns six to come up with the 3 million dollars required to educate Po-Po his own way. He resorts to the only true get rich plan left for the working poor. Ptolemy does grow up to be the smartest man in the world, but we don't hear much about him until the end, although there are references to his RadCon6 group throughout. Mosley, instead, shares other stories about this imminent future. A future in which the gap between rich and poor is wider than ever and r ace relations still run hot despite the politically corrected "colorless society."

Send this interview to a friend Read previous BookPage interviews New crime fiction with a twist from noir master Walter Mosley INTERVIEW BY ALDEN MUDGE For the past several years, writer Walter Mosley has been exploring and experimenting. Widely known and widely praised for his best-selling Easy Rawlins series of crime novels, Mosley restlessly delved into speculative fiction with Blue Light (1998), wrote two books featuring his urban philosopher, Socrates Fortlow, Always Outnumbered, Always Outgunned (1998) and Walkin' the Dog (1999), and produced an edgy nonfiction critique of American capitalism called Workin' on the Chain Gang: Shaking Off the Dead Hand of History "In a funny kind of negative way, I'm representative of a new breed of crime writers and fiction writers because I write so many different kinds of books," Mosley says during a call to his home in New York, where he has lived for nearly 20 years after growing up in Los Angeles. During our conversation, I've been pressing Mosley on whether or not, as an African-American, he feels he's expanded the boundaries for black writers. He has been thoughtful and polite, but he obviously does not want to make large statements about his contribution. More to the point, he doesn't want to be neatly and narrowly categorized. So Mosley talks about the impact of Chester Himes and Donald Goins and notes that there are about 40 black mystery writers publishing in America today. "I kind of took on the job of doing the type of hardboiled fiction that originated with Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler and Ross MacDonald," he finally allows. "I may have been, if not the first one, maybe the most defined person to do that."

    Mosley Makes a Remarkable Debut
Buy The Book There aren't very many African American mystery writers, and there are even fewer black private eyes. Walter Mosley and Easy Rawlins, however, satisfy both of those criteria in solid fashion. More than that, though, this is simply a good, fun read.
The setting is Los Angeles in the 1940s, probably the most fruitful noir time and place there is. During those boom years of post-war expansion, a man could make a good living and even buy a place of his own.
That's all that Easy Rawlins wants. When he's laid-off, though, he can't make his mortgage. He's going to lose his house and he'd rather do almost anything than that. He finds, though, that he has to do more than he bargained for.
