Announcing
Paradoxa #12 (Fall 1999):
"THE DIVINELY HUMAN COMEDY
OF JAMES MORROW"
Guest Editor: James Winchell, Northwest Academy (Portland)
The contributors to this special issue of Paradoxa have all engaged the writing of James Morrow as an instance of the most compelling and brilliant storytelling available in the genre. Given the author's talent for mixing techno-speculative humor, corporeal theology and razor-sharp satire, however, the lingering question remains: what genre might this be? Although all of Morrow's books have received widespread international attention in the form of reviews and readers, at least five works by the novelist are given extended, full-dress analytical appreciations here for the first time, to our knowledge, in print. Critics include Brett Cox, Alex Irvine, Elisabeth Vonarburg, Fiona Kellaghan, Michael Swanwick and Bill Sheehan. Also for the first time anywhere, hardcore philologist and author of the current crossover sensation, The Hidden Book in the Bible , Richard Elliott Friedman tells an astonishing story about a serendipitous connection between his own breakthrough scholarship (in such books as Who Wrote the Bible?

He's also been called a heretic and "the Salman Rushdie of Christianity." Morrow has established himself as a sort of good-natured lightning rod by specializing in scathingly satirical stories in which he sends up nearly everything involving God, religion and morality. He's best known for his Godhead Trilogy read our review ), which begins when the two-mile-long corpse of God falls into the Atlantic Ocean. Taken Gently by the Hand... home author truth unca mike's advice ... contact I don't know about you, but my immediate impulse upon encountering a story entitled "Arms and the Woman," and discovering that its first line is "'What did you do during the war, Mommy?'" is to fling the book or magazine containing it across the room before I can read another word. Because it is instantly obvious what the story must be like if it is to live up to that beginning, and obvious as well that the odds are overwhelming that it will fail to achieve that happy state. Any experienced reader can intuit at once the ideal shape of such a work. It must be the true history of Helen of Troy, told in retrospect by an older and wiser Helen. It must be comic throughout and farcical in places, but it requires as well an underlying seriousness. It must breezily anachronistic, yet simultaneously respectful of and true to the Iliad itself. The frame tale must comment on the central tale. It must be satiric (why else go to so much trouble?) and the satire must be simultaneously broad and subtle. There has to be a wonderfully apt twist at the very end. In short, the story must have all the lightness and sting of a wasp souffle.

From inside cover, and how the book starts:

"The irreducible strangeness of the universe was first made manifest to Anthony Van Horne on his fiftieth birthday, when a despondent angel named Raphael, a being with luminous white wings and a halo that blinked on and off like a neon quoit, appeared and told him of the days to come."
What Raphael tells Van Horne is that God, for unknown reasons, has died. "Died and fell into the sea." Soon Van Horne is charged with captaining the supertanker Carpo Valparaiso (flying the colors of the Vatican) as it tows the two mile long divine corpse through the Atlantic - northward, toward the Arctic, in order to preserve Him from sharks and decomposition. Van Horne must also contend with ecological guilt, a militant girlfriend, a father who won't talk to him, sabotage both natural and spiritual, a crew on (and sometimes past) the brink of mutiny, and greedy hucksters of oil, condoms, and doubtful ideas. If you are reading this, then it is a pretty safe bet that you don’t consider John D. Donahue the sort of guy you would enjoy getting cornered by at a cocktail party. After all, Donahue is the co-editor of a book called Governance Amid Bigger, Better Markets However, Donahue is just the sort of thinker story editors at places like the New York Times and New Yorker have embraced over the past three months, where it has been decided that (to borrow a phrase from current parlance) if government doesn’t get a good deal bigger in the wake of September 11, and that if Americans don’t start feeling real positive about trips to the DMV real fast, then the terrorists will have won. "After 50 years of market ascendancy, government may be poised to reclaim its role as an integral and admirable part of American life," wrote Donahue on the op-ed page of The New York Times this past Thursday. "Whether it does so depends as much on how we view our public servants as on how we finance our public institutions and the work they do." The article continues in this vein for several hundred words, saying that government has been "undervalued" for decades by Americans young and old and hoping that a cultural shift is taking place in which public service gets more respect and citizens start to see "solid protectors" in place of "feckless bureaucrats."

To listen to European papers tell it, the jackbooted thugs long predicted by America’s political fringes have finally taken over, Muslims are being rounded up like Japanese in the wake of Pearl Harbor, and anyone who speaks a discouraging word has bought himself a one-way ticket to a gulag in Alaska. Yet the bureaucratic power grabs being made in Washington in the name of terrorism pale in comparison to what’s going on both in Britain and the rest of Europe, often with far less justification than the threat of madmen looking to crash planes into office buildings. England’s common law is one of its great gifts to Western civilization, and the traditions of trials by jury set down in the Magna Carta in 1297 have created, wherever installed, some of the fairest and most effective judicial systems in the world. Yet something as fusty and musty as the Magna Carta, with its Old English phrasings and talk of lords, knights, barons and earls just doesn’t have a place in Tony Blair’s modern "Cool Brittania." According to a report in the New Statesman Britain is about to throw away much of this proud and important legal heritage by eliminating almost two-thirds of all jury trials, allowing a wide range of offenses (including any crime with a maximum sentence of less than two years) to be tried solely by a judge employed by Her Majesty. To make the situation scarier, much of this change is being implemented by bureaucratic stealth and with as little public comment as possible an audacious move that not even Bill Clinton, who never met an executive order he wouldn’t sign, would be jealous of. A Hollywood player tries to bring down Botox.
By James Morrow L ife sure is tough when you're a member of the Hollywood power elite. Just take the case of Michael and Irena Medavoy, whose lives (to hear them tell it) have been a living hell since the events of September 11, 2001. No, not those Vanity Fair , she "missed the Vanity Fair so looking forward to. I missed that. I missed our anniversary trip. We were going to spend the month of June in Europe, going to Paris and then on a boat in the South of France. I missed that. People had invited me to Aspen for August. I missed that." National Law Journal , "It is common practice to use medications off-label. That's what they do in clinical studies. That's the way the drugs get tested." Orange County Weekly scribe Steve Lowery perhaps summed up the merits of what might be termed Irena v. Botox when he wrote, "Irena Medavoy is so unsympathetic as she's shown cutting flowers in her garden, making oatmeal in her kitchen and playing board games in her zeppelin hangar of a bedroom, that I wanted to send Allergan a muffin basket. I don't think Allergan has anything to worry about, because I have stood in a Newport Beach plastic surgeon's office during a Botox party and have seen firsthand the hungry, (Rick) Jamesian look of women eager to be the next one stuck about the eye socket."
