We were able to uncover no documentation other than his tombstone....no death record, no newspapers to find an obituary...nothing! Judy told us that the story of Willie's death had just been handed down through the family. It seems that on New Year's Day in 1890, young Willie was riding his horse when someone discharged a firearm. Willie fell off his horse (it was probably frightened and reared when the firearm went off) and was then trampled in the excitement. Morecock, William Henry Edloe

James Morrow: UN apologists remain silent on oil scandal
April 28, 2004 ABC viewers were shocked to learn last week that the man who spent six years administering the UN's Iraqi oil-for-food program stood accused of receiving millions of dollars in bribes from Saddam Hussein's regime. The official, Benon Sevan, had conveniently slipped off to a Queensland resort as the scandal broke and gave reporters who showed up on his hotel doorstep a brusque "no comment" before retreating to the comforts within.
But the ABC that aired the story and tracked Sevan down in Noosa Heads was not Australia's taxpayer-financed broadcaster but the American television network. Meanwhile, Australia's ABC has remained virtually silent on the story, choosing to run little more than a couple of newswire stories on Sevan's trip on their website. The editorial decision to turn a blind eye to the story puts the ABC in good company with other Western news outlets, most of which have taken a see-no-evil approach to one of the biggest corruption scandals in modern history: the systematic purchasing of friends and allies by the Iraqi dictator.

Interview: James Morrow
By Faith L. Justice
A ward-winning author James Morrow takes on the foibles and inconsistencies of Western religion with wit and vigor, holding up a mirror and asking, "How far will we go?" Booklist dubs him a "genius" and compares him to Twain, Heller, and Vonnegut, for bringing much needed humor to this too-serious subject. The science fiction and fantasy community has honored him with two Nebulas (for his 1989 short story "Bible Stories for Adults #17: The Deluge" and 1990 novella " City of Truth ") and a World Fantasy Award (for his 1990 novel Only Begotten Daughter In his most recent work, known collectively as the Godhead Trilogy, Morrow takes us on a tour of a post-theistic world. In Towing Jehovah a disgraced tanker captain seeks redemption by fulfilling a dying angel's request to tow God's immense dead body from the middle of the Atlantic to its final resting place in an Arctic ice cave. In Blameless in Abaddon God's body is discovered and He is posthumously put on trial in the World Court for all the evil He allowed in the world. Morrow's newest novel, The Eternal Footman brings this cycle to a close as people struggle with "death awareness" and the psychic consequences of God's abandonment of humankind.

The Eternal Footman, by James Morrow
Reviewed by Michael Jasper
"Mortality has become an ambiguous concept of late. Our deepest thinkers are stumped."
Victor Shamberg, from The Eternal Footman E ver since God died, Nora Burkhart has been having a rough life. After the death of her parents and her husband's fatal heart attack she learns that her son has been stricken with a seemingly incurable disease called abulia. All the while, the skull of God grins down on her mercilessly high above Earth. She can't seem to get away from all the death that surrounds her. Death and mortality are the driving forces in James Morrow's novel The Eternal Footman the final book in a loose trilogy (which includes Towing Jehovah and Blameless in Abaddon ). After God's death, His corpse floats in the ocean, deteriorating until it finally explodes, and Morrow puts the people of Earth on cleanup detail for God's body, the Corpus Dei. Despite the dark subject matter, the novel is not the dreary, angst-ridden, soul-crying-out-in-the-wilderness experience that a reader would expect in a novel so focused on life's end. Instead, with his quirky characters, inspired writing, and wild plotlines that take the reader from a devastated and embattled New York City to a paddlewheel boat crossing the Gulf of Mexico, Morrow tells a sweeping tale of hope and love in a (literally) Godless world. At the start of The Eternal Footman

(May 22, 1840 - July 25, 1905)
James Morrow Walsh was appointed commissioner of the Yukon District in 1897. He also served as the primary negotiator between Sitting Bull and the United States Army in the 1870s, during Sitting Bull's exile in Canada. James Morrow Walsh was born in Prescott, Upper Canada, the son of Lewis Walsh and Margaret Morrow. Little is known of his early life. After an indifferent performance at school, he tried his hand at such employments as machinist, railway man, store clerk, exchange broker, and hotel manager. Eventually he was drawn to the militia, serving during the Fenian raids. Although offered a coveted commission as part of the Red River expedition, he declined at the last minute, possibly because of his marriage to Mary Mowat on April 19, 1870. Through connections within the federal Conservative party, Walsh was offered a commission in the newly formed North West Mounted Police (NWMP) in May of 1873. After assisting with the recruitment of other officers, Walsh accompanied them to Winnipeg. He impressed his superiors enough to be appointed acting adjutant and riding master, and then promoted to inspector in 1874. Regarded as a capable leader, Walsh was sent to establish a post at Cypress Hills in 1875. The subsequently named Fort Walsh became the most important of the NWMP bases over the next several years, largely due to Sioux chief Sitting Bull fleeing to the area in 1876 after the battle at Little Big Horn. Responsibility fell to Walsh to handle the situation. He sympathized with Sitting Bull's case, and enjoyed his role as mediator. However, when he failed to quickly persuade the Sioux to depart, Walsh was transferred to Fort Qu'Appelle in 1880. He was later forced to go to Brockville on leave and not permitted to return until 1881, by which time Sitting Bull had left the country. He resigned over the matter two years later, in 1883.
