Toni Morrison: The Magic of Words (Gateway Biography) by James Haskins, Jim Haskins, 2001
This photo-essay is written at a much lower reading level and for a much younger audience than Morrison's novels. But Haskins writes without condescension, and he includes fascinating information in a clear, direct style with short sentences. While chronicling the writer's life, Haskins also gives readers a glimpse into the times in which she has lived, providing a clear sense of her challenges and motivations.

Talking about 'Love' with the Mocha Moms
Toni Morrison Story Tools YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS New York Parenting Toni Morrison or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? NEW YORK (AP) Toni Morrison sits in the crowded parlor of an old Brooklyn mansion, a cup of tea, slightly tipped, in one hand. From her high-backed chair in the corner, she leans forward and carefully surveys the room. "So," she begins, "what did you think?" Seated around her, squeezed together on sofas and chairs, are 13 members of the Mocha Moms, a nationwide support group for at-home parents of color. They all hold copies of Morrison's new novel, "Love," a multigenerational tale set at a coastal resort. Many feel as if they lived through the story themselves. Tammy Greer-Brown, a mother of two from New York City, confides that she was getting a manicure-pedicure while reading the book. She became so upset during one chapter, a rape scene, that she left the salon in tears. "It made me reflect on my life and situations where it could have been me," she tells Morrison. "You helped me to clear my mind about my own fears, my past, my present, my future. ... And I am so grateful to you for that."

Novels by Toni Morrison: This homepage is *not* intended to be all-inclusive or an authority on anything to do with Toni Morrison. My intention was just to put my thoughts and feelings about her novels into words (and to get a decent grade in my independent study class). This page includes opinions, questions, plus a hypertext journey through various motifs and themes I recorded in each story. I had planned on taking these pages down in the summer of '95, after I received my grade for this project. I decided to leave them up after I received several email messages with positive comments, so thank you to those of you who take the time to let me know you found these pages helpful. *SPOILER ALERT* If you haven't finished one of the books and you decide to check the above links out anyway you will discover that some characters die and other things happen that you might not have expected. Please keep this in mind if that matters to you. If it does matter please remember to come back after you've finished the book. :) Before you write *PLEASE* scan my list of [Frequently Asked Questions] . So far there are only six questions but people really do ask them a lot. Please read the questions to see if you were going to ask something similar.
