41. Patricia Kennealy, Strange Days: My Life With And Without Jim Morrison
Rambles review of Kennealymorrison's autobiography.

Patricia Kennealy,
Strange Days: My Life
With and Without Jim Morrison

(Dutton, 1992)
On June 24, 1970, before witnesses, Patricia Kennealy, editor of magazine, and Jim Morrison, lead singer of The Doors, exchanged vows in a Celtic pagan handfasting ceremony. A year later, he would be found dead in a bathtub in Paris, supposedly of heart failure. Strange Days: My Life With and Without Jim Morrison is the story of what led to the handfasting, and also of what came after the death of the author's mate. It is also a portrait of an era. Kennealy attended Woodstock; she knew personally many of the most famous rockers of the time. Her favorite bands were Jefferson Airplane and The Doors and she describes several concerts by The Doors in great detail. She also recounts time spent interviewing members of Jefferson Airplane. She did not really care for the atmosphere of Woodstock and she does not use nostalgic language to describe the experience. Drugs played a large part in the culture of the late Sixties; it is hard for us, in this "Just Say No" age, to picture that kind of reckless abandonment of self-control. Kennealy speaks without remorse of her own drug use; yes, she dropped acid and smoked marijuana, but she's not going to apologize for it, so just get over it. Despite its title, Kennealy's book does not really focus on Jim Morrison, though she describes in detail each of her meetings with him. It is the story of those few years in her own life and how Morrison changed that life forever. She is careful to point out that she had a life of her own as a rock critic before she met him which continued after his death. She went from being a critic and editor to writing ad copy; then began writing her

In 1965 he formed a group called the Doors with Ray Manzarek, John Densmore, and Robby Krieger. The group became known for its extravagant performing style, combining sensual movements and a hard-hitting sound, amplified to huge proportions. Morrison and other group members also had a reputation for using drugs. After a 1969 performance in Miami, obscenity accusations led ten concert organizers to cancel scheduled dates; although the Miami case was dropped, the group never lost its reputation for obscenity. Eventually Morrison took a vacation in France in order to rethink the course his life was taking. He died there of a drug overdose.

Former band mates pay homage to Jim Morrison
Singer, poet would have turned 60 on Monday
The Doors founding members Ray Manzarek, left, and Robby Krieger burn a poem left by a fan at Jim Morrison's grave. Story Tools YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Jim Morrison Music or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? PARIS, France (AP) Jim Morrison's former band mates burned candles, a rose and a poem at his grave in Paris on Monday, a tribute to the "Light My Fire" singer and cult figure on what would have been his 60th birthday. "We're trying to evoke the spirit of Jim," Robby Krieger, former guitarist for The Doors, told dozens of fans kept behind police barriers. Many held white candles and old album covers. Had the hard-living singer survived to turn 60, he would have been "happy, laughing, joking, a good man," Ray Manzarek, The Doors' keyboardist, told The Associated Press. The two were in Paris for concerts with their new band, The Doors 21st Century. Morrison's tomb was covered with votive candles, flowers, beer cans, photos and a silvery "Happy Birthday" banner. Security agents patrolled the shady, cobblestoned Pere Lachaise cemetery.

James Douglas Morrison was the first child of George Stephen and Clara Clark. They were both in the Navy. He was born in Melbourne, on Florida's east coast on December 8th, 1943, at 11:55 am. He has a younger sister named Anne, and a younger brother named Andrew. Jim was a Navy brat, with all the usual emotional problems. He didn't see his father much because he was frequently moved around the country.
Jim's grade school ambition was to become a writer. Some of his idols included Rimbaud Keats and Jack Kerouac. Jim excelled in history, science, psychology, and English; but was always getting into trouble. He attended St. Petersburg Junior College and Florida State University. He finished his academic career at UCLA in 1965. Jim received a Bachelor's degree of Fine Arts, with a major in film. He also got a degree in Cinematography, and actually made his own movie.

Eyewitnesses have said that the actual funeral lasted less than 8 minutes. The five people that attented did not wear black, showed no sorrow or respect, and conducted themselves very inappropriately. Pam moved to California shortly after to avoid questions, or possible drug and manslaughter charges. She spent some time in Marin County, north of San Francisco, then went back to Los Angeles. Following a career of prostitution, she died of a heroin overdose in April of 1974. Her parents had her cremated remains buried at Fairhaven Memorial Park in Santa Ana California.

Then - whoosh, and I'm gone... and they'll never see anything like it ever again... and they won't be able to forget me - ever."- Jim Morrison James Douglas Morrison was born to Steve and Clara Morrison in Melbourne, Florida. A Navel officer, Steve was forced to move his family around a lot when Jim was a child, and some say that fact led to Jim's unique method of speaking out. Upon graduation from George Washington High School in Alexandria, Virginia, Jim continued his education at several institutions before finding his way to California, and UCLA. He began studying film, his true desire, and got into music accidentally. It was soon after that he met Ray Manzarek on a Venice beach, who was already in a band called "Rick and the Ravens". Jim joined the already formed band, and in the autumn of 1965, the Raven's recorded a 6 track album, featuring "Moonlight Drive", "Summer's Almost Gone", and "Break on Through". Jim took to the streets of LA, searching for a contract at all of the major LA recording studios.
