In 1971 the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (NGDB) was riding high on the success of the album "Uncle Charlie and His Dog Teddy" - which included the smash hit version of the Jerry Jeff Walker song "Mr. Bojangles." Still, the band was seeking to add depth to the authenticity of its pioneering country-rock sound. Then, just two months after the conception of a side project that would pair them with their bluegrass and country heroes, NGDB found itself in Nashville recording what would become the next year's landmark album, Will the Circle Be Unbroken Three decades later the platinum album - recently released in an expanded, remastered 30th-anniversary edition by Capitol Records - stands as a testament to the group's place in history, and its continuing ability to successfully bridge the gap between contemporary and traditional music. 2001 marked the return of co-founder John McEuen to the fold after several years of solo pursuits, rejoining Jeff Hanna, Jimmy Ibbotson, Jimmie Fadden, and Bob Carpenter, all of whom are vocalist/instrumentalists contributing to the band's well-rounded sound. "With Johnny back, we feel as if the band’s really come full-circle," Ibbotson says.

William Morris Davis is often called the "father of American geography" for his work in not only helping to establish geography as an academic discipline but also for his advancement of physical geography and the development of geomorphology. Life and Career Davis was born in Philadelphia in 1850. At the age of 19, he earned his bachelor's degree from Harvard University and one year later earned his masters degree in engineering. MORRIS, WILLIAM WRIGHT (1805-1883). William Wright Morris, judge, legislator, and planter, was born in North Carolina in 1805. In 1840 he moved to Alabama, where he taught school and studied law until 1847, when he brought his family and slaves to Texas and settled three miles north of Henderson. He became district judge in 1854 and in 1859 was appointed to represent Rusk County in the Eighth Legislature to fill the unexpired term of John N. McClarity. Morris was particularly interested in promoting railroads in East Texas and in the development of Rusk County resources. Clay discovered on his land was used in making pottery and brick. He died at his plantation home on June 3, 1883, and was buried at Henderson. Morris County, established in 1875, was probably named in his honor. THE DECORATION OF CHURCHES
William Morris
Mary Magdalene, Cartoon for stained glass window at Church of All Saints, Langton Green, Kent , c. 1862 Wash, graphite, and ink on paper THE DECORATION OF HOUSES For Morris, the idea of the beautiful house was at the center of both his art and philosophy. The passion he held for architecture and domestic spaces can be traced throughout his life, in his letters and writings and his work as a designer, as well as in his love for his own houses, Red House in Kent, the sixteenth-century Kelmscott Manor, and his London home, Kelmscott House. The wallpapers, textiles, carpets, tapestries, and furniture designed by the Firm were intended to create an integrated artistic interior and, in so doing, to transform domestic life into a deeply aesthetic experience. Morris wished "to revive a sense of beauty in home life, to restore the dignity of art to the ordinary household decoration." The intricate layering and intertwining of organic forms in Morris's patterns for wallpapers, such as

About Kelmscott Manor
Kelmscott Manor, a grade 1 Listed Tudor farmhouse adjacent to the River Thames, was built in 1570, with an additional wing added to the northeast corner in about 1665. The Manor is built of local limestone on the edge of the village of Kelmscott. William Morris chose it as his summer home, signing a joint lease with the Pre-Raphaelite painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti in the summer of 1871. Morris loved the house as a work of true craftsmanship, totally unspoilt and unaltered, and in harmony with the village and the surrounding countryside. He considered it so natural in its setting as to be almost organic, it looked to him as if it had "grown up out of the soil"; and with "quaint garrets amongst great timbers of the roof where of old times the tillers and herdsmen slept".

first encountered Morris through Architecture. I have always had a love of medieval churches, and in the year before I went up to University, I decided to take that a step further by studying the Gothic Revival. I read all the original texts: "Contrasts" by AWN Pugin, "A description of Fonthill Abbey", Rickman's "Analysis", Ruskin's "Stones of Venice" and so on. Somewhere along the way I met up with Morris and the firm. My next encounter with this extraordinary fellow was through his political writings, which I came across at Warwick University, who have the complete works including a Dover facsimile of one of the fantasy novels. I was hooked as there was so much to the man. His interests and political viewpoint, in particular his views about art were mine. Once I had discovered the Society through finding the address in a book of political writings there was no stopping me.

D eep in the heart of England's Cotswolds, two villages claim connection with William Morris, St Paul, King Arthur, Roman governers, the woollen industry, and one of England's most haunted country mansions. Selsley and Woodchester are steeped in a history that stretches across five thousand years: from the earliest migrant populations to history that is being made today.

The Noble Craftsmen We Promote:
The Arts and Crafts Movement in the American Midwest
Roots of Arts and Crafts
Back to Introduction On to America The Arts and Crafts Movement began in England in the 1860s as a reform movement. Its primary proponents were John Ruskin (1819-1900) and William Morris who is pictured at right (1834-1896). Ruskin, its philosophical leader, was the most influential of all Victorian writers on the arts and a member of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. The Pre-Raphaelites believed the medieval world was purer in form than the post-Renaissance world because it was more closely tied to nature. Ruskin's book The Stones of Venice (1853) had a great impact on the intellectuals of Victorian England. In it, he made a direct connection between art, nature, and morality-good moral art was nature expressed through man. Continuing this connection, Ruskin believed the decorative arts affected the men who produced them. The machine dehumanized the worker and led to a loss of dignity because it removed him from the artistic process and thus, nature itself. As Ruskin stated, "all cast from the machine is bad, as work it is dishonest." While Ruskin built the philosophical foundation of the Arts and Crafts Movement, it was William Morris who became its leader. Morris took Ruskin's ideas about nature, art, morality, and the degradation of human labor and translated them into a unified theory of design. By doing so, Morris successfully wedded aesthetics and social reform into the Arts and Crafts Movement.
