Stroud The stained glass to the left is a detail from the Sermon on the Mount by Rossetti, and the spectacular and utterly wonderful window to the right is by Morris and Webb and shows the seven days of creation. The picture, by the way, does no justice to the original. William Morris owned a country house at Kelmscott Manor in the village of Kelmscott near Lechlade. It can be viewed by arrangement with the trustees (see Things to See Return to the Cotswold Hyperguide History Page Digital Brilliance

About the Project
Mount Morris Dam is located in the town of Mount Morris, New York next to Letchworth State Park. It is situated deep in the gorge of the Genesee River about 67 miles upstream of the city of Rochester. The project was authorized by Congress in the Flood Control Act of 1944, and constructed from 1948 to 1952 at a cost of $25 million. The Dam provides flood protection to farmlands, residential areas and industrial and commercial developments in the lower Genesee River valley to Lake Ontario, including the Rochester Metropolitan Area.
Records show that severe floods had plagued the valley as far back as 1800. Terrible destruction resulted from the flood of 1865, which developed flows exceeding 24 million gallons per minute, one half the flow of Niagara Falls. From 1865 to 1950, a major flood ravaged the Genesee River Valley on an average of every seven years. Completion of the project significantly reduced the risk of flood disaster which formerly threatened the lower Genesee River valley. The capacity of the reservoir in the river gorge, 301,853 acre-feet, is ample to protect the basin below from all but very infrequent floods. Between June 15 and November 1, a reservoir elevation of 600 feet, known as the conservation pool, may be maintained to enhance the scenic beauty of Letchworth State Park. At other times, run-of-the-river levels prevail in the gorge. When river flows exceed the natural capacity of the downstream channel, flood waters are stored. As soon as downstream conditions permit, the stored water is released gradually through the nine conduits at the base of the spillway sections. About 30 days would be required to empty a full reservoir at a rate that would safely avoid damage to downstream properties.

His political and artistic convictions were closely linked, and he claimed that art as was stifled by the squalid industrialism of Victorian England, although only the rich could afford to buy his expensive designs.
English designer, socialist, and writer. A founder of the Arts and Crafts Movement , he condemned 19th-century mechanization and sought a revival of traditional crafts, such as furnituremaking, book illustration, fabric design, and so on. He linked this to a renewal of society based on Socialist principles. Morris was born in London and educated at Oxford, where he formed a lasting friendship with the Pre-Raphaelite artist Edward Burne-Jones and was influenced by the art critic John Ruskin and the painter and poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti . He abandoned his first profession, architecture, to study painting, but had a considerable influence on such architects as William Lethaby and Philip Webb. In 1861 he cofounded Morris, Marshall, Faulkner and Company (

Brewer, Elizabeth. “Morris and the ‘Kingsley Movement',” The Journal of the William Morris Society Vol. IV, No. 2 (Summer 1980): 4-17.

Brewer examines the possible influence Kingsley’s works may have had on Morris. She believes that it is very difficult to specify categorically that there was a direct influence, though there are many instances where the thought of both men overlapped. She discusses, among others, the attack on celibacy and asceticism in The Saint’s Tragedy and Hypatia ; Kingsley’s stress on the importance of the environment in Yeast; the socio-political ideas pervading Alton Locke ; Kingsley’s belief in the value of art, an awareness of one's heritage, and the pleasures of rural life to the ordinary working man; the use of the dream device in Alton Locke ; the romance as well as the Norse element of Hypatia. Poets Painters
William Morris Howard Pyle W illiam Morris (1834-1896) is best known as a compatriot of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the father of the Arts and Crafts movement. The Exhibition Description Other sources will remind us that Morris also resurrected free-hand embroidery as an art form, rediscovered almost-forgotten techniques for extracting and setting natural dyestuffs, and pioneered the return to classic typography in the face of the ghastly hordes of slab-serif fonts that characterize commercial printing of the nineteenth century. But what is intriguingly absent from the most laudatory surveys of the man and his work is the fact that William Morris almost single-handedly invented the medieval-flavored imaginary world fantasy.
