John Betjeman Award History of the Scholarship The oldest of the British national amenity societies, the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings also introduced the first post-graduate specialist training in building conservation in the 1930s. The founding members of the Society who advocated a policy of sensitive, conservative repair (rather than restoration), realised they needed to demonstrate how this could be put into practice, and that it would be necessary to pass this knowledge on. The architect Philip Webb was the leading light of this group and a number of young architects trained under his guidance – they discussed major repair problems with him, worked on his sites alongside the craftsmen and took responsibility for the day to day supervision of the work. In 1930, with financial support from the Royal Institute of British Architects, the SPAB decided to award £60 for a Scholarship to a young architect to study "the methods of repair now become traditional among the architect and builder members of the Society", and it was named the Lethaby Scholarship in memory of Professor W R Lethaby. The Society remains convinced that the best way to learn about construction methods, building materials and their performance, and the range of methods of repair available today, is out on site. Today former Scholars are among the leading conservation experts in the United Kingdom, looking after some of the foremost buildings in Britain. Some are cathedral architects, some look after palaces or National Trust houses and English Heritage scheduled monuments. Some Scholars, conversely, have devoted their careers to relatively minor buildings, such as abandoned medieval churches or vernacular agricultural buildings, producing work of the highest quality. The Scholarships, which have no equivalent in Britain in either the formal or informal education system, are highly respected by employers as a training in building conservation.

He has long been considered one of the great Victorians and has been called the greatest English designer of the 19th cent. While at Oxford, Morris, along with his lifelong friend Edward Burne-Jones , became deeply interested in the ritual and architecture of the Middle Ages. However, Morris's great awakening came through his readings of John Ruskin , whose ideas on aestheticism and social progress he gradually adopted. In 1856, after being apprenticed to an architect, Morris attached himself to the brotherhood of Pre-Raphaelites and through the encouragement of Dante Gabriel Rossetti began to paint and write. In 1858 he published his first volume of poems, The Defence of Guenevere and Other Poems.

WILLIAM MORRIS MORRIS, WILLIAM tion gave offence, and in return for the recall of Genet, at the request of the United States, the French government, in 1794, asked for the recall of Morris. Business and pleasure, however, still detained him in Europe for four years longer. He returned to New York in 1798, resumed the practice of his profession, re-entered politics, and sat in the United States Senate as a Federalist from 1800 to 1803. As early as 1 80I Morris became interested in projects for improving the communication between the Hudson river and Lake Erie, and from i8xo to I8I6 he was chairman of the board of canal commissioners, which after exploring the country prepared plans for the Erie Canal. He was bitterly opposed to the war of 1812, and openly advocated the formation of a northern confederacy to escape the rule of the Virginia dynasty. He died at Morrisania on the 6th of November 1816. A master stylist in any genre, Hume's major philosophical works A Treatise of Human Nature (1739-1740), the Enquiries concerning Human Understanding (1748) and concerning the Principles of Morals (1751), as well as the posthumously published Dialogues concerning Natural Religion (1779) remain widely and deeply influential, despite their being denounced by many of his contemporaries as works of scepticism and atheism. While Hume's influence is evident in the moral philosophy and economic writings of his close friend Adam Smith, he also awakened Immanuel Kant from his "dogmatic slumbers" and "caused the scales to fall" from Jeremy Bentham's eyes. Charles Darwin counted Hume as a central influence, as did "Darwin's bulldog," Thomas Henry Huxley. The diverse directions in which these writers took what they gleaned from reading Hume reflect not only the richness of their sources but also the wide range of Hume's empiricism. Comtemporary philosophers recognize Hume as one of the most thoroughgoing exponents of philosophical naturalism.

Van Alan Clark, Jr. Library of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. The William Morris Hunt Library is the main museum library, and has been an integral part of the Museum of Fine Arts since its founding. In 1870 the Trustees of the Museum were incorporated by the Massachusetts legislature. The founding of a special library was one of their major goals for the new institution. Five years later, the sum of $1,000 given for the purchase of books made this goal a reality. In 1909 the Library was named the William Morris Hunt Memorial Library to honor this popular Boston artist and generous supporter of the Museum. 'William Morris' William Morris (1834-1896) was born in Walthamstow, Essex, the son of a wealthy city stockbroker. He was educated at Marlborough public school, then went to Oxford, where he met Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) and Philip Webb (1831-1915), both of whom became lifelong friends. Both Morris and Burne-Jones intended entering the Church, but they gained inspiration from the writings of John Ruskin , and decided they wanted to become artists. Ruskin saw the work of Rossetti and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood as 'the dawn of a new era of art'. After leaving university, Morris spent the years between 1856 and 1861 pursuing various careers, including training under George Street as an architect. Through Burne-Jones, he also met Rossetti and other Pre-Raphaelite painters. Encouraged by Rossetti, Morris turned from architecture to painting, and was at the same time writing poetry. In 1859 he married Jane Burden, the archetypal Pre-Raphaelite beauty with brooding eyes, who appears in several of Rossetti's paintings. Early in their marriage they moved into 'Red House' in Bexleyheath, Kent, which had been designed for them by Philip Webb. They created murals, carvings, stained glass, metal work, embroidery and furniture. Their success was mainly due to Morris and Webb's associations with architects, church decoration being their most important activity.
