A Brief History of Holocaust Denial
Ben S. Austin This essay will attempt to provide a brief historical review of Holocaust denial. For an in-depth treatment of this question, the reader is referred to two major works on the subject: Lucy S. Dawidowicz, Historians and the Holocaust and Deborah Lipstadt, Denying the Holocaust: The Growing Assault on Truth and Memory . The material in the present essay draws heavily from these two excellent works. Discussion of current Holocaust denial and deniers will appear in a separate entry, Variations in Holocaust Denial . Here I am concerned with the historical background and origins of the movement. Primary attention will be given to Paul Rassinier, Harry Elmer Barnes and Austin J. App. The very first Holocaust deniers were the Nazis themselves. As it became increasingly obvious that the war was not going well, Himmler instructed his camp commandants to destroy records, crematoria and other sign of mass destruction of human beings. He was especially adamant with regard to those Jews still alive who could testify regarding their experiences in the camps. In April, 1945, he signed an official order (which still exists in his own handwriting) that the camps would not be surrendered and that no prisoner "fall into the hands of the enemies alive." Apparently Himmler knew that the "Final Solution" would be viewed as a moral outrage by the rest of the world. Historian Kenneth Stern (1993:6) suggests that many top SS leaders left Germany at the end of the war and began immediately the process of using their propaganda skills to rewrite history. Shortly after the war, denial materials began to appear. One of the first was Friedrich Meinecke's

CHAPTER 11
Distinctions Between Literary and Religious Humanism
In retrospect, I think it was inevitable that some persons would be overlooked who should have been asked to sign the manifesto and others asked whose positions were not fully known. We were, after all, working under pressure, with no budget, and with very little clerical help. Two important educators who contributed to the discussion of humanism before 1933 but who were not asked to sign the manifesto were Edward Scribner Ames and Oscar W Firkins. Dr. Ames taught philosophy at the University of Chicago, and Dr. Firkins taught English at the University Of Minnesota. These two men helped distinguish the new religious humanism— which was naturalistic in philosophy, socially activist in sympathies, and scientific in orientation from a so-called literary humanism, which was at that time widely known and specifically identified with the viewpoints of Irving Babbitt and Paul Elmer More. Along with many others, I felt that the literary humanists had misappropriated the term humanism

Published in a magazine! Posted by Kevin at 14 May 2004 in Views Today was a milestone in my life. Since becoming avid reader of National Review my freshman year in high school, I have always dreamed of getting published in the flagship conservative magazine. Well, today it came true. I have a book review in the current issue of National Review [sub. req.] ! For those of you who are not subscribers I will post it below. This is not likely to change my life in any serious way, but it does warm the cockles of my heart. Back to The Source
Russell Kirk and the Age of Ideology

by W. Wesley McDonald
(Missouri, 264 pp., $44.95) KEVIN HOLTSBERRY The typical conservative may be only vaguely familiar with Russell Kirk as a traditionalist thinker, and as one of the founders of modern American conservatism; and in the academic world, Kirk scholarship remains rare. As a result, Kirk survives mostly as an icon — remembered fondly but not really valued at his true worth. W. Wesley McDonald, a professor of political science at Elizabethtown College, has moved to fill this void by offering a stimulating intellectual biography of his mentor and friend. Russell Kirk and the Age of Ideology avoids hagiography, and provides a serious and thought-provoking discussion of the philosophical underpinnings of Kirk's work. McDonald seeks to make Kirk's ideas understandable and accessible by examining them from the philosophical ground up; the result is a careful and engaging account of the battle of ideas at the heart not only of modern American conservatism but of Western political thought.

Introduction
It may be doubted whether any oriental race has ever had an interpreter gifted with more perfect insight and sympathy than Lafcadio Hearn has brought to the translation of Japan into our occidental speech. His long residence in that country, his flexibility of mind, poetic imagination, and wonderfully pellucid style have fitted him for the most delicate of literary tasks. He has seen marvels, and he has told of them in a marvelous way. There is scarcely an aspect of contemporary Japanese life, scarcely an element in the social, political, and military questions involved in the present conflict with Russia which is not made clear in one or another of the books with which he has charmed American readers.
March, 1904. Most of the following Kwaidan , and Hyaku-Monogatari . Some of the stories may have had a Chinese origin: the very remarkable "Dream of Akinosuké," for example, is certainly from a Chinese source. But the Japanese story-teller, in every case, has so recolored and reshaped his borrowing as to naturalize it. . . . One queer tale, "Yuki-Onna," was told me by a farmer of Chôfu, Nishitamagôri, in Musashi province, as a legend of his native village. Whether it has ever been written in Japanese I do not know; but the extraordinary belief which it records used certainly to exist in most parts of Japan, and in many curious forms. . . . The incident of "Riki-Baka" was a personal experience; and I wrote it down almost exactly as it happened, changing only a family-name mentioned by the Japanese narrator.

"We remember them for the survivor"
Every year around Armistice day, members of the 264 Squadron and an RAF chaplin conduct a Remembrance Service at the monument for the deceased Polish air crew of the Wellington bomber.
Left: Unknown newspaper photo "Crash Crew Remembered". The 1981 service was filmed by the BBC 'Look North' team.
Account of the 13th Nov 1999 Service ...submitted by Paul Elmer:
Twenty years ago this week a small group of quiet green air cadets made their way to the Memorial on Buckden Pike. The cadets lead by their unit commander Flt Lt Bob Chapman were destined to begin a chapter of their own in the Joe Fusniak Story. On a cold November day in 1979 the first Annual Buckden Pike Memorial Service took place. The Service has become the main focus of Remembrance for cadets of 264 (Skipton) Sqn and many cadet units in the area including 2431 (Keighley) Sqn whose C.O Flt Lt David Ireland (formerly of 264 ) has attended each year since 1984.
Today (13 th November 1999) the 21st service took place, marking 20 years of continued acts of remembrance at the Memorial. We remember for Joe his comrades, their gift, to all generations, of their lives on that fateful day in January 1942, and all that have perished in war. For all of us that have been each year to Buckden Pike, knowing Joe, and his story, has created a personal, and perhaps more plausible reason for the acts of remembrance that take place each Armistice Day, and for the young cadets, what seemed just a lot of fuss, now has real purpose. Today, though quite mild in the valley, the Pike lived up to its reputation; the mist hanging around the slopes about 300ft below the Memorial, and the usual chill wind, made the shelter of the high stone wall most welcome.

    Babbitt on Humanitarianism
Richard M. Gamble [From HUMANITAS National Humanities Institute , Washington, DC USA]
From whence come wars and fightings among you? Come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? James 4:1
In 1915, Irving Babbitt, professor of French literature at Harvard University and architect with Paul Elmer More of the New Humanism, turned his attention to the "breakdown of internationalism" that had plunged the world into the catastrophe of the Great War. Observing the critical situation less than a year into the European conflict, he prepared a lengthy and penetrating two-part essay on internationalism during a brief but busy sabbatical that was otherwise devoted to his forthcoming book, Rousseau and Romanticism his important consideration of the origin of the modern temperament. The companion articles appeared in the Nation Nation 's own views on the war. Babbitt was indeed likely to offend the magazine's more jingoist readers. By the late spring of 1915, there had already been some loss of American life (most notably on the Lusitania in May), and the fighting in Europe had stalemated in the trenches of the Western Front, circumstances pointing to the likely involvement of the United States. But Babbitt's essays for the Nation preceded America's "inevitable" decision to join the belligerents and were published when deliberation and restraint were still possible for America's leaders, when an alternative remained open to Rooseveltian "realism" on the one hand and Wilsonian "idealism" on the other, twin expressions of the will to power and both violations, as Babbitt would argue, of humanism's law of measure.

The essay by James W. Tuttleton in the thirtieth-anniversary issue of Modern Age Scholars have thoroughly examined the old criticism of the New Humanism, especially as directed against Babbitt. Both Christian and non-Christian interpreters of his work have been taken to task for careless, sometimes even scandalous, misrepresentations and misunderstandings of his ideas and for lack of philosophical discernment and depth. All too many of those who attacked Babbitt had not studied his ideas in an intellectually serious manner and were sometimes content to repeat the unsubstantiated and superficial allegations of others. In the last several decades scholarship in this area has created a new setting for discussion of the humanism-religion controversy. One might mention, for example, the authoritative writings of the late Folke Leander, including Humanism and Naturalism (1937) and The Inner Check (1974), the work of George Panichas, exemplified by his essay "Babbitt and Religion" ( Modern Age , Spring/Summer 1984), the collective volume Irving Babbitt in Our Time (1986), edited by George Panichas and myself, and work of my own such as

JIM LEHRER: Paul Tsongas, the former Massachusetts Senator, in 1992 presidential candidate, died over the weekend from liver failure and pneumonia. He was 55 years old. Tsongas served two terms in the House and then was elected to the Senate in 1978. In 1984, after only one term, he was diagnosed with cancer of the lymph nodes. He decided not to seek re-election so he could undergo aggressive treatment and be with his wife and three daughters. After a bone marrow transplant from his twin sister, his health improved, and he resumed his law practice in Boston. In 1992, he sought the Democratic presidential nomination, running second and went to the primary season behind then Governor Bill Clinton of Arkansas, who, of course, went on to win the presidency. During that campaign, Tsongas appeared on the NewsHour and discussed his political and personal philosophies with Judy Woodruff. FORMER SEN. PAUL TSONGAS: (April 10, 1991) I have been referred to as a pro business liberal. I have always been referred to that way. That is what I am. On traditional Democratic issues, human rights, civil rights, women's rights, the environment, I am a liberal, and I make no apology for that. But in terms of energy policy and in particularly in terms of economic policy I am a realist. I may sound like a Republican but if it works, I am for it. I am not locked in to the ideology, sort of the class warfare, corporate bashing that Democrats find attractive. That is not me it has never been me.

"I think that giving is closely related to religion, and having been brought up in a church home it was just taken for granted," he says. "My mother was a volunteer church worker, and she instilled in us that we should serve however we can." Andersen kept those values with him when, in 1941, he bought a controlling stake in a small, struggling St. Paul glue company called H.B. Fuller. He served as the company's president for most of the next 30 years, building it into a global adhesives industry leader. From the start Andersen instilled in H.B. Fuller an unusual philosophy that did not stress maximizing profits at all costs, but instead placed a high value on treating employees well and on giving back to the communities in which Fuller operated.
