  • Scott M. P. Reid: A Bitter Trial: Evelyn Waugh and John Carmel Cardinal Heenan on the Liturgical Changes
    Henry Green (Henry Yorke): Loving

"Loving stands, together with Living, as the masterpiece of this disciplined, poetic and grimly realistic, witty and melancholy, amorous and austere voluptuarycomic, richly entertaininghaunting and poeticwriter." - TLS (*****)
    Henry Green (Henry Yorke): Nothing

The British writer Henry Green's literary skill went far beyond a comedy of manners, which this book appears to be on the surface. Dense with meaning, "Nothing" is a short literary gem, which forces the reader to read a million nuances into the witty and yet deeply dense conversations which make up the entirety of the book. (*****)
Arnold Bennett: The Old Wives' Tale

Published in 1908. This study of the changes wrought by time on the lives of two English sisters during the 19th century is a masterpiece of literary realism. Constance and Sophia Baines, the daughters of a shopkeeper, grow up in the rural town of Bursley. Sophia eventually runs off and settles in Paris with her husband, who is a cad, and Constance remains behind in England and marries the mild-mannered shop assistant. The sisters are reunited years later when they are old, and Bennett skillfully contrasts what has remained stable in their characters with the differences time and environment have produced in their personalities. This long and ambitious work established Bennett's reputation as a novelist. (*****)

Ranger Doug, The Idol of American Youth , sings lead and baritone. He drives the Riders' music Too Slim sings lead and harmony, and is a bravura player on the bunkhouse (upright) bass. As the comic lead in the crew, he's the sharpest wit in the West, and he's penned the scripts for many of the Riders' comedy acts. Too Slim w as working with the Dicky Lee road band way back in '77 when a call from Ranger Doug and a night performing at "Herr Harry's Phranks & Steins" moved him to pursue an uncertain future in the world of Cowboy music. Being perhaps the most over-educated act in showbiz, all three Riders hold graduate degrees. But with a degree in wildlife management, Too Slim has the best opportunity to exercise his academic background....simply working with the Riders. When he tires of lugging his bass, he simply plays his face (you have to hear it to believe it). Woody Paul, King of the Cowboy Fiddlers , sings lead and tenor, and his superb fiddle playing has been a hallmark of Riders unique music. From Tennessee roots in a musical family, Woody spent his teen years hanging out with the likes of country music pioneers the McGees and Roy Acuff. After earning a PhD in theoretical plasma physics from MIT, Woody Paul decided to throw a wrench into the centrifuge and opted to play music. Each Rider has written original music for the group, and Woody's compositions span the gamut of the Riders' original lineup, including songs in the tradition of the Old West, instrumentals, cowboy ballads and love songs. Woody's also a talented rope trickster and a part-time brain surgeon.

New Humanism
Largely a reaction to modern relativism and determinism, New Humanism was a critical and cultural movement that affirmed freedom of the will and the necessity of standards in life and art. Although the New Humanists were not professional philosophers, their literary and social criticism was informed by "a working philosophy mediating between dogma and skepticism and devoid of revelation and ecclesiastical organization" (Foerster, Towards Standards 203). The movement came to brief prominence in the late 1920s because it offered to cure America's spiritual malaise and to check its fatal drift into materialism, hedonism, and demagoguery. However, Irving Babbitt (1865-1933) and Paul Elmer More (1864-1937) had been propounding humanism (they disliked the adjective "new") almost since their meeting as Harvard graduate students in 1892. Both were midwesterners who found a usable past in New England culture but who also read widely in the literature and philosophy of East and West to find "a law of life" (Babbitt, Literature 119) transcending time and place.
