Within the walls of my family there are no traces of an indentured heritage. Had some branch of my ancestors managed an erasure of our past swinging machetes in the blazing heat of scorpion-infested cane fields? In the 1960s, my West Indian history teacher, who was of Indian origin, told the class that after the 1830s abolition of slavery, no Black person wanted to be caught dead near a sugar plantation. The British sugar estate owners went abroad, yet again, to find replacement workers. First, our teacher told us, they brought in the Irish, and when the Irish weren't able to do the work, the Germans. But the Germans weren't able either. "Weren't able?" we queried. Her response: "Too hot." But the smirk accompanying her smile was instructive. Apparently the Brits tried Chinese workers next. But the Chinese were enterprising. They took up more lucrative engagements, like fishing and shop keeping. And so, the lesson continued; it was to India that Britain looked next and finally. Stories, stories, yes, but what lingered in our minds was that smirk. It seemed to say, "Look deeper." Those of us who were of Indian ancestry, shy to probe outside ourselves, looked inward. We, the official story went, were the ones whose families had stayed and still provided much of the cane-field labor in the Caribbean. We this confounding we again bore the stigma of being a weak people, the ones the British could have fallen back on, and of being the descendants of the lowest of workers, the cane cutters. But we going along with the

In Another Country, A House By the Sea
Harry heads to the retaining wall wearing his waterproof work jacket and rubber boots on his feet. Only a narrow strip of Howe Sound's ivory-colored water in front of his house is visible. A curtain of mist and clouds hanging in the fjord for weeks now blots out the shore on the far side. In the past week he has left his property in Elderberry Bay only once. That was some days before Christmas. Kay had telephoned him several times insisting that he spend Christmas day with her, have lunch with her family, but he declined. He wears heavy work gloves and carries a long rod and a steel pick for swinging into and catching the logs. The odor of the sea, its floor churned and spat up by winter storms, saturates the air. At the side of the house, pine needles and twigs, and small boughs brought down in the storms, although not heavy enough to have done damage to its body, threaten to bury the truck. It is almost two weeks now since he and his men stopped work for the season and still he has not unloaded the truck. He should by now have scrubbed and put away the lawn mowers, shovels, wheelbarrows and the various shears in the shed, but they remain mud and sap-encrusted in the back of the truck. It is supposed to be eagle season now, a time when one expects to see them by the hundreds, perched in the highest bare-topped trees along the shore, or cruising the length of the Sound as they scan for salmon carcasses. They should be easily spotted on the water, poised on spinning deadheads, a whole fish squirming between a beak or flapping in the talon of a raised foot. But, with this rain one minute, wet snow the next, the fog and the mist, not one is to be seen.

CEREUS BLOOMS AT NIGHT
Shani Mootoo
(Press Gang)
This first novel from a West Coast writer born in Ireland and raised in Trinidad is a pleasure to read, quite an achievement in a novel that at times threatens to veer dangerously close to what I'm afraid I find annoyingly fanciful magic realism. There is something about Shani Mootoo's playful style that keeps us glued to the story of Mala Ramchandin, the mysterious old woman at the rest home who may or may not have committed a terrible crime.
Her caretaker, a gentle gay man named Tyler, her eccentric lover, her lover's son who is a girl, her cruel father and her vanished lesbian mother populate a novel suffused with tropical dampness in the imaginary town of Paradise, Lantanacamara. Everything melts in the heat and rots and still grows two feet a day.
The novel's central symbol is the gorgeous white flowered cereus plant, which blooms only at night and has two smells a vanilla-like sweetness and a horrible curdling. This is much like Mala, born with fragrant hope and doomed to a life of blood, madness and decomposition. Cereus Blooms at Night is like the garden of Eden, except clogged with insects. It is full of glistening snail trails, moths, lizard eggs, wood lice and daddy long-legs, but none of these creepy crawlies would matter if human tragedy could be kept at bay.

CEREUS BLOOMS AT NIGHT
By Shani Mootoo
There is something about Shani Mootoo's playful style that keeps us glued to the story of Mala Ramchandin, the mysterious old woman at the rest home who may or may not have committed a terrible crime. Mootoo uses magic realism, employed by such celebrated authors as Isabelle Allende and Gabriel Garcia Marquez, to hoist you into a tornado of madness and psychological depravity. Tyler, her sensitive gay caretaker at the nursing home, eccentric lover who woke up only once a month to send food to her via her son, her cruel father who took us to the revolting depths of incest, and vanished lesbian mother, take us to a fictitious Caribbean Island and damp world, Paradise, Lantanacamara. The novel's central symbol is the gorgeous white flowered cereus plant, which blooms only at night and weaves into the life of our protagonist who too feels safe only in the wombs of darkness

Cereus Blooms at Night (1996, Press Gang Publishers, Canada; 1998, Grove Press, New York.) 1997 Tiptree short-list.
Don't say I didn't warn you. Cereus Blooms at Night ain't exactly science fiction. Magical realism is even stretching it a bit, because there just isn't that much magic. But there's ju-u-ust enough to slip it in to this list, which I'm doing because I want more people to read Shani Mootoo's magical prose. Especially those of you interested in gender issues (and really, why else are you on this web site?). Cereus is set on a fictional Caribbean island with a madwoman, a queer transvestite (well, two), and a tragic life story. Enjoy. lq, 5/18/99 HOME CHECKLIST anthologies lists ...
