Shani Mootoo "Cultural bastards, Janet, cultural bastards. Dat is what we is." Biography S hani Mootoo was born in Ireland in 1958 and raised in Trinidad. She moved to Canada at the age of 19, where she began a career as a visual artist. A skilled multimedia artist and videomaker, she has had exhibitions in the U.S and Canada, and her videos have been shown at a number of film festivals. Mootoo has said that she has gravitated to the visual most of her life, because as a child, when she told her grandmother of the sexual abuse she suffered at the hands of an uncle, she was told never to say those words again. So, in different ways, I found it safer not to use words and started making pictures. Finally acknowledging and naming her experience of abuse prompted Mootoo to return to words, and write her first collection of short stories. Her first book, Out on Main Street , published in 1993, is a collection of short stories. Her second book, Cereus Blooms at Night , published in 1996, is her first novel. Major Themes M ootoo's experience as a multiple migrant - an individual whose family has traversed the cultures of India, Ireland, England and Trinidad - and as an immigrant in Canada, emerge as central themes in her work. Panel Topic Description
How do cultural languages and contexts create or distort the business of everyday life such as love or romance? How do perceptions of who or what is Indian impact the perceiver, the perceived and the interaction between them? What does it mean to be Indian vs. Indo-hyphen, for example Indo-Caribbean? Is there a difference in “Indian identity” across different geographic contexts such as the US versus Canada or is it all the same? Our panelists explore the nuances of identity expressed from various vantage points such as “Over Here” and “Over there.” *This panel was inspired by New York's "OVER HERE" festival, a two-day artists' exchange originally conceived collaboratively by The Asian American Writers' Workshop and the South Asian Women's Creative Collective in March 2003.

Set on the fictional island of Lantanacamara, Cereus Blooms at Night takes its title from a rare, night flowering cactus whose scent can transport you to ecstatic realms. The story of Mala, an eccentric and reclusive old woman, is told by her gay nurse, Tyler. As he pieces together fragments of Mala's life, unforgettable characters enter his world and change it forever. Part magic realism, part psychological drama, this haunting novel explores a world where love and treachery collide.

Shani Mootoo was born in Ireland in 1958 and raised in Trinidad. She moved to Canada at the age of 19 where she began a career as a visual artist and filmmaker. An abused childhood led Mootoo to stop using words for many, many years and thus she turned to a career that focused on the visual. Finally, after confronting her past, Mootoo returned to words and wrote her first collection of short stories entitled Out on Main Street . Her second book, Cereus Blooms at Night , is her first novel.
"Mootoo is delighted to be called a 'Canadian' writer, although she was born in Ireland, raised in Trinidad and is of East Indian ancestry. The last thing she wants is to be known as is an Indo-Trinidadian-Irish-Canadian-lesbian writer" (Mootoo quoted by Gessell). She has also been careful not to label her writing as lesbian writing for fear of alienating potential customers disturbed by the political connotations of the word lesbian. Mootoo focuses on issues of authenticity and identity in both of her written works. She "exposes the uncertainty of the hybrid individual" and "she explores a variety of situations in which her characters are pressed to display a prescribed cultural authenticity both by individuals putatively from within the same culture and from those who are clearly outsiders" (Dias)

    Victim Status in Caribbean Literature
    by James Rovira Drew University
The victim has served special functions and occupied a special status in western culture almost since its inception. The Jewish and Christian Scriptures, among the most influential literatures in the west, center their narratives and theologies around the victim. In these literatures whether the victim is a sacrificial animal, an entire people group, or a Messiah, the victim drives the narrative and serves as a beacon calling down the Divine to act in human history. The victim was the fulcrum upon which primitive western moral reasoning turned, and the west has not progressed beyond the centrality of the victim in its moral reasoning today. Therefore understanding the historical role of the victim begins by tracing the basic contours of the victim in Biblical literature. Cereus Blooms at Night is an effective door into Caribbean literatures both old and recent, representing the victim from the standpoint of the victims themselves. Mootoo's novel reveals both the importance of narrative to the victim and narrative's betrayal in its implicit support of a system that creates the victim as victim. The novel does so, however, while showing a way out of victim status.
