Philosophy Moore, Marianne Moore, Marianne , in full MARIANNE CRAIG MOORE (b. Nov. 15, 1887, St. Louis, Mo., U.S.d. Feb. 5, 1972, New York, N.Y.), American poet whose work distilled moral and intellectual insights from the close and accurate observation of objective detail. A disciplined craftsman, she won the admiration of fellow poets throughout her long career. The poet and critic T.S. Eliot called her one of the few producers of durable poetry in her time. Moore graduated from Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania in 1909 as a biology major and then studied commercial subjects and taught them at the U.S. Indian School in Carlisle, Pa. From 1921 to 1925 she was an assistant in the New York Public Library system. In 1925already well known as one of the leading new poetsshe became acting editor of The Dial an influential American journal of literature and arts, and remained there until it was discontinued in 1929. In 1921 her first book, Poems, was published in London by the Egoist Press. Her first American volume, Observations (1924), won the Dial Award. These initial volumes already exhibited her conciseness and her creation of a mosaic of juxtaposed images leading unerringly to a conclusion that, at its best, is both surprising and inevitable. They contain some of her best-known poems, including "To a Steam Roller," "The Fish," "When I Buy Pictures," "Peter," "The Labors of Hercules," and "Poetry." The last named is the source of her often-quoted admonition that poets should present imaginary gardens with real toads in them.

Marianne Moore (1887-1972) Contributing Editor: Bernard F. Engel Classroom Issues and Strategies The general student block against poetry often causes difficulties. With Moore, it is useful to observe that she seeks accuracy of statement, that the alleged difficulty of her work does not arise from abstruse symbolism or reference to obscure autobiographical matters, but from precision: seeking exact presentation, she does not fall back on expected phrasings. The attentive who will slow down and read thoughtfully can understand and enjoy. Advise students to read through once quickly to get perspective. Then they should read slowly, and aloud. I also advise them that after this first reading they should let the poem sit two or three days, then repeat the process. In class, I read through short poems a few lines at a time, pausing to ask questions; I also ask students to read passages aloud. With undergraduates, I prefer not to spend hours on any one poem. It is better that they read carefully, but without the extended analysis that is appropriate in some graduate classes. Students need help with the rhetoric and syntax; they need to be shown how to read with care. They rarely raise the abstruse questions of aesthetics or moral philosophy that fascinate the literary critic. Advanced students, however, may be asked to compare Moore's effort to achieve precision with the argument of some deconstructionists and post-modernists that is not possible for verbal art to reach that goal.

Susan Tichy Resources for Students Notes on Texts For several women poets of first importance we still lack authoritative, or even comprehensive, editions of their complete worksthus making serious examinations of their poetry difficult. Hilda Doolittle, Lorine Niedecker, Mina Loy, and Marianne Moore are only a few of the women thus neglected. Only for Loy is an effort under way to remedy the disaster. The sequence of Moore’s 1935 Selected Poems was suggested by T.S. Eliot, who also wrote the introduction. Though Moore deleted some poems from her later Collected Poems (and its revised version, Complete Poems, now the only collection in print) she made only slight changes to the sequence of those that remained. The arrangement is thematic and places several of her poems from the early 1930s first, with poems from 1915 appearing as far as 88 pages into the book . Thus it obliterates all sense of development and obscures differences among Moore’s periods of high poetic production up to 1935. (One argument for containing Moore as a "minor" poet is that she "did not develop.") Though you may not be reading Moore’s poems in strictly chronological order, you will wish to recognize these periods and place her work in the context of contemporary public and private events. The list below includes only the poems I assigned the last time I taught Moore (Fall 2000). When time permits (or hell freezes over, whichever comes first) I will complete the list. What is here should at least allow you to pinpoint the characteristics of each of her most productive periods. The sequence is based on several sources, most prominently Margaret Holley’s “Chronology of Moore’s Published Poems,” in her
