Moore, Brian The Doctor's Wife
Genre Novel (275 pp.) Keywords Abandonment Aging Domestic Violence Family Relationships ... Women's Health Summary Forty-something, a surgeon's wife, Mrs. Sheila Redden of Ireland arrives in Paris en route to the south of France for a second honeymoon. She has booked the same hotel room as the first honeymoon. Her husband, Kevin, is delayed by his surgical obligations, and promises to join her, but she knows that he is not keen on the trip. While in Paris she meets Tom, an American at least ten years younger who follows her to the south. They begin a love affair that overwhelms her with its emotional and sexual power. Kevin stays home, at her urging, but he becomes suspicious and uses a fake illness in their teenage son in an attempt to lure her back. Then he flies to the resort to confront her. His brutal manner convinces Sheila to leave him. Tom wants her to return with him to Vermont. She consults a priest for advice. In desperation Kevin appeals to Sheila's brother, also a physician. They medicalize her love for Tom as a symptom of early menopause and try to bring her home. Allowing Tom (and the reader) to believe she will go with him, she finally decides for a job in London and solitude in modest rented rooms.

Batman: The Killing Joke
Alan Moore, perhaps more than any other comic writer, has created works that stand the test of time. At his best, he is capable of creating stories that arguably rival the best his contemporaries can come up with in any medium, from film to prose. The Killing Joke is a classic Moore script, suffering from only one small problem: it's crippled by its reliance on the rules of the superhero story. The book's execution is superb. The narrative flows beautifully, despite flashing between the present day (a particularly vicious battle between Batman and his arch-enemy the Joker) and the past (the Joker's origins and first run-in with Batman). It is wonderfully executed, from the links between the two storylines to the Watchmen -like visual panels that speak volumes without the need for words. Bolland's artwork is equally stunning. The characters' expressions speak for themselves - Moore barely needs to fill the speech bubbles with dialogue. And John Higgins' colouring adds a dimension to Bolland's work that lifts it off the page. So what's the problem? Well, while there's no denying that this is a wonderful Batman story, the necessity of playing by the unwritten rules of such a tale round off its spiky edges. At the beginning of the book we're almost promised a mould-breaking story along the lines of Frank Miller's

Moore, Brian Moore, Brian, , Canadian-American novelist, b. Belfast, Northern Ireland. He emigrated to Canada in 1948, where he was a reporter for the Montreal Gazette. He later moved to the United States and was a longtime resident of Malibu, Calif., although he maintained Canadian citizenship. While his novels are often concerned with people who are capable of hypocrisy and self-delusion, a comic vein runs through them. In clear, precise prose, Moore sets his beautifully drawn, isolated characters against a world marked by provincialism and religiosity. Moore's fiction has never been enormously popular, but it is strongly admired by other writers and a devoted group of readers. His novels, each of which is strikingly different in plot, setting, and historical period, include The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne The Luck of Ginger Coffey The Great Victorian Collection Black Robe Lies of Silence The Statement (1996), and The Magician's Wife (1998). Several of his works were made into films. He also wrote under the name Michael Bryan. See D. Sampson

58. "The Room" By Brian Moore? - BreakTheChain.org

http://www.breakthechain.org/exclusives/theroom.html
Room for Improvement Even the most touching of stories becomes more touching when associated with tragedy. In this case, a true tragedy led to an unfortunate case of false attribution. About this story - I have some background on the author that I thought you might be interested in. Procrastinating as usual, 17-year-old Brian Moore had only a short time to write something for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes meeting. It was his turn to lead the discussion so he sat down andwrote. He showed the essay, titled "The Room" to his mother, Beth, before he headed out the door. "I wowed 'em." he later told his father, Bruce. "It's a killer. It's the bomb. It's the best thing I ever wrote." It also was the last. Brian's parents had forgotten about the essay when a cousin found it while cleaning out the teenager's locker at Teays Valley High School. Brian had been dead only hours, but his parents desperately wanted every piece of his life near them - the crepe paper that had adorned his locker during his senior football season, notes from classmates and teachers, his homework. Only two months before, he had handwritten the essay about encountering Jesus in a file room full of cards detailing every moment of the teen's life. But it was only after Brian's death that Beth and Bruce Moore realized that their son had described his view of heaven. "It makes such an impact that people want to share it. You feel like you are there." Mr. Moore said.
