When did you first consider yourself a writer? W ell, from around the age of nine, when I did my first fanzine. A general magazine called Outlaw's Own. I left school at fifteen and was a working journalist from the age of sixteen, editing Tarzan Adventures at seventeen and editing other magazines from then on. How has becoming a published author impacted your lifestyle? I've hardly known any other kind of life. I've done other things, but I've never not been a writer. How do you see the future of SF literature in the 21st century I think it will go on being many things, as it has always been. That is the literal-minded space and mechanistic stuff will continue to be written and have an audience and the wilder, less rationalistic stuff will continue to be written and have an audience. In many ways it's possible to argue that what we know as sf IS the literature of the 21st century, with an increasing number of people growing up on it and many literary novels now containing elements of SF of one kind or another. SF already tends to be the best selling popular fiction of our day. It hasn't been a minority form for many, many years.

Später übernahm er die Redaktion der Krimi-Serie Sexton Blake, schrieb dann eine Fantasy-Serie und machte sich dann auf eine Reise durch das nördliche Europa, bei der er als Gitarrist und Blues-Sänger auftrat. Nach eigenen Aussagen wurde ihm dabei in Hamburg der Rucksack mit allen bis dahin verfaßten und noch nicht veröffentlichten Manuskripten gestohlen, was ihn zu einem neuen schriftstellerischen Start veranlaßte. 1964 übernahm Moorcock das englische SF-Magazin New Worlds , das er in wenigen Jahren zu einem Sprachrohr für eine Erneuerung der Science Fiction machte, indem er dort den Autoren Raum für radikale sprachliche und stilistische Experimente gab. New Worlds befand sich immer am Rand der Pleite, und um das Magazin über Wasser zu halten, schrieb Moorcock weiter regelmäßig Fantasy-Romane. Im Rahmen von New Worlds entstand auch Moorcocks enigmatischer Held Jerry Cornelius, mit dem er den ambitionierten Versuch unternahm, einen Mythos für den Wandel des Lebensgefühls von den sechziger zu den siebziger Jahren zu schaffen. Außerdem schrieb Moorcock eine ganze Reihe von Büchern, die sich schwer einem bestimmten Genre zuordnen lassen - von Science Fiction bis zum Spionagethriller.
