Your browser does not support script advertise. EUROPE'S MOST VISITED SF/F WEB SITE Elevating Elric: Michael Moorcock Interviewed When and why did you begin writing? When did you first consider yourself a writer? W ell, from around the age of nine, when I did my first fanzine. A general magazine called Outlaw's Own. I left school at fifteen and was a working journalist from the age of sixteen, editing Tarzan Adventures at seventeen and editing other magazines from then on. How has becoming a published author impacted your lifestyle? I've hardly known any other kind of life. I've done other things, but I've never not been a writer. How do you see the future of SF literature in the 21st century I think it will go on being many things, as it has always been. That is the literal-minded space and mechanistic stuff will continue to be written and have an audience and the wilder, less rationalistic stuff will continue to be written and have an audience. In many ways it's possible to argue that what we know as sf IS the literature of the 21st century, with an increasing number of people growing up on it and many literary novels now containing elements of SF of one kind or another. SF already tends to be the best selling popular fiction of our day. It hasn't been a minority form for many, many years.

Michael Moorcock: Populist Intellectual
Michael Moorcock (courtesy of White Wolf Publishing, Inc.). Multi-award winning writer, rock musician, editor, essayist and occasional actor, Michael Moorcock stands at the crossroads of a number of earthly universes. Small wonder then that he should set his fiction in the Multiverse, a multitude of intersecting alternative universes which provide an infinite number of slightly differing realities. Moorcock's references range even more widely than all the adventures of his characters Elric, Von Bek, Pyat and Jerry Cornelius combined. When Moorcock takes the mic, a World Fantasy Con panel on reading modern fantasy takes a sharp detour to Spectator editors who can't read comics on the way to the tortures of modern jazz. Crescent Blues invited Moorcock to treat our interview questions in the same way as just a starting point. Happily, he took us at our word. Thanks. Here's some casual answers to be going on with!

Michael Moorcock
Cartographer of the Multiverse
Born in London in 1939, Michael Moorcock has had an important influence in fantasy and science fiction since the '60's. He started out at the age of fifteen as editor of the Tarzan Adventures magazine, eventually being thrown off the magazine for trying to publish too much prose (it was supposed to be a comic strip magazine). After this he began selling stories to the Science Fiction and Fantasy magazines of the time, coming up with the Eternal Champion; a figure which has appeared throughout most of his fiction. When Moorcock was offered editorship of New Worlds he was already a successful writer with the Elric character, his most famous creation, under his belt. He took New Worlds, a traditional SF magazine filled with space ships and sword fights, and turned it into a vehicle for the '60's alternative culture as well as pathing the way for modern contemporary fiction. Publishing authors such as JG Ballard and Brian Aldiss who went on to further mainstream success. This lead to a period during the 1980's where Moorcock concentrated on more literary works and less on the more fantastic novels. That is not to say that he ignored fantasy altogether, with brilliant works such as The War Hound and the World's Pain. He wrote The Brothel in Rosenstrasse, a novel of erotomania, and then plunged into the Between the Wars sequence of novels, a series set in the earlier parts of this century looking at the events that lead to the Holocaust, following the adventures of an unreliable and untrustworthy Russian emigrate who stumbles from situation to situation in an increasingly disturbing world.

A Homepage of Dark Literature
"When the Rose looked back she saw that Paul Minct had been returned to his seat. He was not dead, but his cold eyes begged for her mercy. The rest of him was expertly snapped here and there. He was little more than a heap of bones but he would live indefinitely. Mr Oakenhurst bowed low before his invisible kin. The voice which came from the folds of drapery behind the table was musical but oddly diffident. 'We shall put those two with the other meat.' There was a long pause, then: 'The broken one is yours, if you wish.'" Michael Moorcock, Blood

Introduction
This is a page dedicated to an exploration of dark literature, covering both recommended reading and selected bibliographies. It is a very idiosyncratic guide, the goal of which is merely to shine a light on some obscure (and not so obscure) gems of dark literature. My definition of Dark Literature covers everything from the early gothics, through the weird literature of the thirties and the middle of this century to the current crop of literature with dark themes, whether it is classed as fantasy, horror or just plain literature. It is very much guided by my reading so any suggestions for further exploration are welcome. I consider Dark Literature to be anything that takes reality (or even a created one) and twists it in unique ways, from the full blown fantastique of Clark Ashton Smith and Michael Moorcock, to the more grounded dark shimmerings of Franz Kafka and Ramsey Campbell; from the sanguine depths of Angela Carter to the dark contemporary horror of Graham Masterton.

He holds forth to our Hunty on why he was glad Michael Moorcock appeared in the sixties, why his Helliconia trilogy is just about a change in the weather, and the terrible unwisdom of terraforming Mars. When and why did you begin writing? When did you first consider yourself a writer? I am a writer and always was; being a writer is an integral part of my identity. Being published, being well regarded, is a component of that identity. Do you use an agent and if so, who? Of course I have a literary agent; I also have a publicity agent and a secretary. How did your early years from your work as a writer? My late adolescence was spent in the army in the East - as related in "Twinkling". Those years of danger and adventure naturally had a strong influence on me. I wrote even then, and ran a Section magazine for some while. When spending a year in Sumatra, I also ran a theatre and painted murals. On return to England, I discovered in me an aversion to regular work. I could not get into university. I began to write again, plays, short stories, novels, poems. As I still do.
