Susanna Moodie
Susanna Moodie and Catharine Parr Traill are two of Canada's most important 19th-century writers. Born in England only 23 months apart, the two sisters became professional writers before they married. In 1832 they emigrated with their Scottish husbands to Canada, settling in the backwoods of what is now Ontario, near present-day Lakefield. They recorded and interpreted their experiences as pioneers in books for which they remain famous to this day - for example, Catharine Parr Traill's The Backwoods of Canada (1836) and Canadian Crusoes (1852), and Susanna Moodie's Roughing It in the Bush (1852) and Life in the Clearings (1853). They continued to live and write in Canada until their deaths - Susanna's in 1885 and Catharine's in 1899. [© National Library of Canada. A deadly pallor overspread his face, and tears came into his eyes. "The church entered! money stolen to such a large amount! My dear sir, can it be possible?" '"Only too true. But the thief, Ralph; who can be the thief? It must be some one well acquainted with the premises, who could gain access to the key, and must have known the secret of the lock. It is this which distresses methat fills my mind with the keenest anguish." He looked hard at the old mannot a look of suspicion, but one of intense inquiry, as if he depended upon his answer to solve his doubts. 'Ralph trembled visibly. His voice became a broken sob. "Oh, my dear, my honoured master, you cannot surely suspect me, your old and faithful servant?" '"I would as soon suspect myself!"

WE met as teenage instructors at summer camp in 1961 and became instant friends. I asked the questions. She invariably came up with the thoughtful answers. Our friendship grew. During her last year at the University of Toronto, and my first, she gave me some silkscreen equipment which she had used to make posters. I took a night course in silkscreening at the Ontario College of Art and began to make posters for Hart House and for UC Follies. Her parents bought one of my first silkscreen prints. She left to do graduate studies at Harvard. I continued in Art History at U of T, and in Paris. We corresponded, far more frequently than people do now. She often pitched my latest prints to her friends, and unfailingly gave me encouragement. Top of Page When she gave me a copy of Double Persephone, her first book of hand-set poems, I was thrilled. Her words were like triggers, setting off a buzz of associations in my head, feeding a. visual subconscious that I had only just begun to identify.

John Thurston. Montreal and Kingston: McGill-Queen's University Press 1996. Pp. xii, 264. $55.00 Reviewed by Cecilia Morgan Queen's University As a historian of gender, colonialism, and the middle class of nineteenth-century Ontario, I have found that the writings of the two Strickland sisters who emigrated to Upper Canada have often been pressed into service as a means of understanding middle-class women's reactions to life in the bush: Moodie, the class-ridden, discontented, and culturally adrift gentlewoman, and Catharine Parr Traill, the cheerful, 'just roll up your sleeves and get on with it' pioneer housewife who cultivated, rather than fought, her environment. Their works, particularly Moodie's, are trotted out far too frequently as descriptions of Upper Canadian 'reality.'

A Settler's Tale
RTF version (400 Kb) The literature of any period reflects the concerns, attitudes and physical realities of the period from which it comes. In the nineteenth century, Canada was still a developing country with vast forests and unmapped plains. The people who wrote about this time were sometimes starkly realistic, and at other times wildly romantic.
