Margaret Atwood’s “The Journals of Susanna Moodie"
by R. P. Bilan The Journals of Susanna Moodie My claim, however, that this book is tightly organized, and that to understand it properly one must take full account of the structure, seems to be denied by Atwood herself. In her interview with Graeme Gibson in Eleven Canadian Novelists Atwood explains how she wrote this series of poems: While this work may not have been written like a novel, it does focus on a central character and is tied to a chronological sequence showing her growth. Moreover, even assuming this is an accurate account of the way Atwood wrote the poems, once she had written them she obviously made a very careful arrangement. And despite what she says in the interview, her comments in the Afterword suggest a clear enough pattern and organization in the book. cause of her separation from the land. Her initial commitment is to all those things associated with light: civilization, reason, order. Only as she comes to accept the darker side of herself, and of nature, will she be able to change and grow. In The Journals of Susanne Moodie Surfacing comes to realize, beyond the realm of logic, reason, and civilized order.

"The Casket of Truth": the Social Significance of Susanna Moodie's Spiritual Dilemmas
By John Thurston "A Message From The Dead" In 1881 Susanna Moodie "had a strange visit" from a woman who had "a message from the dead" for her. This message is from an old friend who had died four years earlier, and to whom Moodie had written a poem in 1827. Thoughts of what "a wonderful photographer memory is," imprinting "images . . . on the heart and brain" which must have some purpose, flood over her, and she recalls another old friend, Anna Laura Harral, to whom she had also addressed poems in 1827. Anna, who had died in 1830, had already sent Moodie messages from the dead. Kate Fox delivered the first of these, through the medium of spirit rapping which she had discovered with her sister. Her truly strange visit in 1855 opened the channels of this medium for Moodie. Moodie's repeated partings from loved ones left her with life-long emotional and spiritual yearnings. Emigration was the consequence of an early severance from her father in 1818 who had, before he died, been parted from his money. Indeed, all her social and spiritual dilemmas were largely due to this message from the dead about the separation of the family from their gentry status. Before his downfall, Thomas Strickland had educated his eldest daughters, Elizabeth and Agnes, in a way befitting their newly-risen social position.

Quotations
The want of education and moral training is the only real barrier that exists between the different classes of men. Nature, reason, and Christianity recognize no other. Pride may say Nay; but Pride was always a liar, and a great hater of the truth. Ah, Hope! what would life be, stripped of thy encouraging smiles, that teach us to look behind the dark clouds of to-day, for the golden beams that are to gild the morrow. What a wonderful faculty is memory!the most mysterious and inexplicable in the great riddle of life; that plastic tablet on which the Almighty registers with unerring fidelity the records of being, making it the depository of all our words, thoughts and deedsthis faithful witness against us for good or evil.

Review by Mary Thomas. excerpt:
While her husband was thus engaged [in attempting to find an affordable farm in the vicinity of Coburg], Susanna endured her "unpleasant" residence in the crowded "house of public entertainment" as best she could. With leisure and conveniences available to her but often alone with Katie [her baby daughter] while John was farm-hunting, she found herself "daily yielding up my whole heart and soul to that worst of all maladies, homesickness". Her mood was such that she was too lonely and dejected to engage in new writing. "Memory," she told a female friend, "is my worst companion; for by constantly recalling scenes of past happiness, she renders me discontented with the present, and hopeless of the future, and it will require all your kind sympathy to reconcile me to Canada." Roughing It in the Bush was a tale of difficulties overcome, and talent, especially of the literary variety, unappreciated. And then she was upset that people in Canada didn't much care for, or buy, her book!
