My guest columnist is Montague Keen, a brilliant psychic researcher, journalist, agricultural administrator, magazine editor and farmer. A member of the Council of the Society for Psychical Research for 55 years, chairman of its Image and Publicity Committee and secretary of its Survival Research Committee, he was principal investigator of the Scole Group of physical mediums, and author of the Scole Report, published in the Proceedings of the SPR (Vol 54 Pt 220) in 1999 with his co-investigators Professors Arthur Ellison and David Fontana.
THE PSYCHIC CHALLENGE

This note is written in response to a request to comment on James Randi's observations on his website on The Ultimate Psychic Challenge programme screened on Discovery Channel on August 17th, and to be repeated both on that channel and on Channel 4 (on August 23rd); and it embodies a challenge to Mr. Randi to live up to his repeated assertion on the programme that if only adequate evidence of paranormality could be demonstrated to him, he would be happy to acknowledge it - and give the claimant the $1million prize he so publicly and consistently pledges. I have already commented on the programme as edited, although I reproduce below both my pre-edited and post-edited comments for the benefit of those, including Mr. Randi, who may not have had the opportunity to see them.

The apple never falls far from the tree…

After working on the Queen Mary during WWII, Charles Dunning Montague returned to work as a foreman at Fairweather’s, one of the leading society furniture makers of the day. Charles was a qualified cabinetmaker who was particularly skilled at making chairs.
He opened his own workshop in 1949, thus beginning a tradition that has been carried down through three generations of the Montague family.
Charles’s philosophy was simple: to create beautiful, enduring hand crafted furniture. It’s a philosophy that his son, Doug Montague, and grandsons, Stuart and Brad, are proud to continue.
The boys’ earliest memories are of visiting their grandfather’s workshop, not far from where the Montague showroom stands today. In those days the cedar dust was up to their waists, and the small factory was crammed with the tools of the trade and 40 years worth of pieces, with chairs and patterns hanging on the walls.
The boys remember the wooden benches, the pot bellied stove blazing away in the middle of the polishing shop, sliding across timber floors burnished from years of wear, and overhearing conversations about work, furniture, and some of the colourful characters who made up Montague’s early customer base.

I finished my PhD at the Computer Science Department of UCSC (University of California, Santa Cruz) in 1998. My dissertation was Concurrent System-Software via Soft-Instructions I currently mostly do OS-related consulting in the silicon valley area (I have over 25 years of experience in operating systems engineering). Much of what I do I would consider technology transfer. If you know of some exotic research field (or just suspect that someone has played in some area before), and you would like to try to apply any previous research results to a real-world project, get in touch. The more exotic the better! My current e-mail is: brucem@mail.got.net [FreeBSD Links] [PicoBSD Notes] [Nak nanokernel (license unencumbered JN kernel] The remainder of this page is quite dated...

    Welcome
    Montague Summers (1880-1948)
Written and compiled by George Knowles.
Montague Summers was not a witch, far from it, he was a Catholic Priest and devoutly against witchcraft, however one feels that his contribution to the literature of witchcraft deservedly earns him a mention in any roll call of witches. He was an eminent scholar and author who wrote extensively about the darker sides of witchcraft, demonology, vampirism and lycanthrope. He believed adamantly that witches were evil servants of the devil 'Satan' who throughout history deserved all the punishments they received. Summers was born Alphonsus Joseph-Mary Augustus Montague Summers in Clifton near Bristol, England on the 10 th of April 1880. The youngest of seven children, his father was a prominent banker and justice of the peace. He was raised as an Anglican but later converted to Catholicism. Educated at Trinity College Oxford, he also studied at Litchfield Theological College and by the time he was 26 had earned both Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees. Summers entered the Roman Catholic Church and became a priest in 1909, but his standing and position within the church has never really been made clear.

    Welcome
    Charles Godfrey Leland
Written and compiled by George Knowles.
Charles G. Leland was a scholar, folklorist and author who wrote several classic books on English Gypsies and Italian Witches. These include Etruscan Roman Remains Legends of Florence The Gypsies Gypsy Sorcery and perhaps his most famous book Aradia: Gospel of the Witches . In all he wrote over fifty books during his life time and his writings inspired the likes of Gerald Gardner and Doreen Valiente as well as many other pioneers of modern day Witchcraft. Born of old English descent, Charles G. Leland’s lineage can be traced back to a John Leland who became the Royal Antiquary in 1533, and later to Charles Leland who was Secretary of the Society of Antiquaries during the reign of Charles 1. His family moved to America in 1636 and there settled Massachusetts. Charles G. Leland was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the 15th of August 1824. A few days after his birth an old Dutch nurse carried Leland up into the garret of his home and there performed a ritual. She placed upon his breast a Bible, a key and a knife and then placed lighted candles, money and a plate of salt at his head. The purpose of the rite was to cause him to rise up in life, to be lucky and to become a scholar and a wizard. He grew up as a child fascinated with folklore and magick, and was regaled with stories and tales of ghosts, witches and fairies. The family being prosperous they lived in a household that employed servants and from one - an Irish immigrant woman - he learned about fairies, and from another – a black women working in the kitchen – he learned about Voodoo.
