The Misanthrope
by Moliere, 1622 Main characters Alceste - He is in love with Celimene and very cynical about people and the way they act. Celimene - She is conceited and shallow being everything that Alceste dislikes in a person. Philinte - He is a good friend of Alceste but just the opposite in character since he is less frank and more sincere towards others. Arsinoe - She serves as a foil to Celimene being just as clever but less shallow. Minor Characters Eliante - She is Celimene’s good and reasonable cousin. Oronte - He is in love with Celimene and a writer of poetry. Clitandre - He is another suitor trying to gain the hand of Celimene. Setting Celimene’s apartment - There is very little action and very much dialogue in this play which takes place in this apartment. Plot Symbols Alceste - He symbolizes the cynicism and hypocrisy of the manners of the time. Philinte - He symbolizes the sometimes false goodness and friendship of people.

Home Theatre Links Advertise Here Email Us The Misanthrope A synopsis of the play by This article was originally published in Minute History of the Drama ALCESTE is one of those candid souls who believe that the truth should be spoken in season and out. He will make no concessions to ordinary courtesy and denounces the insincerity of contemporary society upon every possible occasion. His friend, Philinte, tries to make him see that honesty does not require him to go out of his way to offend and hurt people. He even points out that a few well-spoken words in the right place might go far toward bringing a favorable decision in the lawsuit Alceste has pending in the courts. To this Alceste has but one answer. If his suit cannot win through its own merits, he will renounce a society which sanctions such injustice and leave Paris to live the life of a hermit. When the young courtier, Oronte, begs his opinion on some verses of which Oronte is the author, Alceste's rude and needless criticism adds another to the not inconsiderable list of his enemies and brings upon him the threat of a second lawsuit.

Moliere

I live on good soup, not on fine words.
Moliere

If everyone were clothed with integrity, if every heart were just, frank, kindly, the other virtues would be well-nigh useless.
Moliere

If you suppress grief too much, it can well redouble.
Moliere
It is not only for what we do that we are held responsible, but also for what we do not do. Moliere Of all the noises known to man, opera is the most expensive. Moliere Oh, how fine it is to know a thing or two. Moliere One should eat to live, not live to eat. Moliere Some of the most famous books are the least worth reading. Their fame was due to their having done something that needed to be doing in their day. The work is done and the virtue of the book has expired. Moliere That must be wonderful: I don't understand it at all.

His obligation to these works, however, was slight, as a comparison of them with School for Husbands School for Husbands was triumphantly successful. Loret tells us that it became the "delight of all Paris." Not long afterward it was represented by the same players before the court at Vaux, where, as in the capital, it added to the reputation of the dramatist. Cinna and Polyeucte . Indeed, it is not too much to say that School for Husbands

73. The School For Wives
A history and analysis of moliere's comedy 'The School for Wives.'
http://www.theatrehistory.com/french/schoolforwives001.html
A history and analysis of the play by This document was originally published in The Drama: Its History, Literature and Influence on Civilization, vol. 7 . ed. Alfred Bates. London: Historical Publishing Company, 1906. pp. 175-179. The School for Wives Bible and the Maxims of Marriage , especially toward the end, was pervaded by a depth of sensibility which he had not previously displayed, and which, joined as it was to unequalled dramatic excellence, exerted a strong fascination over most of the audience. Industriously repeated every night in the salons, the criticisms on were soon caught up outside, especially by those who are ever ready to calumniate an unusually successful man. But the dramatist's assailants were not allowed to have it all their own way. Boileau came forth against them, and his prowess as a satirist, now placed beyond question by the Adieux La Guerre Comique . Here, as elsewhere, it was conclusively shown that he had not been guilty of either immodesty or impiety; but this by no means put an end to the controversy.

A synopsis of the play by moliere.
http://www.theatrehistory.com/french/donjuan001.html
DON JUAN or THE STONE GUEST A synopsis of the play by This document was originally published in Minute History of the Drama DON JUAN is a graceless brigand of hearts, the despair of his servant, Sganarelle, and of his upright father who must repeatedly rescue him from some scrape. Don Juan's favorite method of procedure is to go through a secret mock marriage. This satisfies the girl yet leaves him legally free when he tires of her charms. His latest conquest is the beautiful Elvire whom he has enticed from a convent to "marry" him. At this point word reaches Don Juan that Elvire's brothers have sworn to kill him. Disguised beyond recognition, master and man set out to return to the city. On the way Don Juan rescues a stranger from robbers only to discover that he has saved the life of one of Elvire's brothers. Because of his vow of gratitude before he learns Don Juan's identity the stranger spares Don Juan's life for the nonce. Once more on their way, Don Juan and Sganarelle come to the tomb of the Commandant who had been a recent victim. As a joke, Don Juan insists that Sganarelle must invite the statue to dinner. Sganarelle is frankly frightened and Don Juan is somewhat taken aback when the statue nods its acceptance and Sganarelle is terrified when at the dinner hour it actually appears. It is, the servant points out, a sign of Heaven's just wrath.
