The Early Life of Moliere
Moliere was born in Paris, probably in January 1622. The baptismal certificate which is usually and almost with absolute certainty accepted as his is dated the 15th of January 1622, but it is not possible to infer that he was born on the day of his christening. The exact place of his birth is also disputed, but it seems tolerably certain that he saw the light in a house of the Rue St Honore. His father was Jean Poquelin, an upholsterer, who, in 1631, succeeded his own uncle as valet tapissier de chambre du roi . The family of Poquelin came from Beauvais, where for some centuries they had been prosperous tradesmen. The legend of their Scotch descent seems to have been finally disproved. The mother of Moliere was Marie Cresse; and on his father ‘s side he was connected with the family of Mazuel musicians attached to the court of France. In 1632 Moliere lost his mother; his father married again in 1633. The father possessed certain shops in the covered Halle de la Foire, Saint Germain des Prés, and biographers have imagined that Moliere might have received his first bent towards the stage from the spectacles offered to the holiday people at the fair. Of his early education little is known; but it is certain that his mother possessed a Bible and

24. Jean Racine: His Childhood And Early Career
A biographical account of French dramatist Jean Racinehis formative years, his early poems, and his relationship with the older dramatist, moliere.
http://www.theatrehistory.com/french/racine001.html
JEAN RACINE: HIS CHILDHOOD AND EARLY CAREER This document was originally published in The Drama: Its History, Literature and Influence on Civilization, vol. 7 . ed. Alfred Bates. London: Historical Publishing Company, 1906. pp. 185-188, 196-198. Aethiopica , a story hardly suited to one of his age, angrily threw the book into the fire; whereupon the youth immediately procured another copy, read it to the last line, and then, carrying it to the sacristan, sullenly remarked, "You may burn this as well." But impatience of restraint was not accompanied by a disinclination to study; on the contrary, his progress was rapid enough to awaken sanguine hopes as to his future. In the matter of Greek scholarship, it would seem, he learned more than Lancelot could teach him, burying himself in the woods to pore over Euripides and Sophocles EARLY POEMS It soon became evident that he had no sympathy for his self-elected calling. Established for a time in Paris as an assistant to his guardian, he gave himself up to doubtful pleasures, fell into bad company, and in some of his letters went so far as to ridicule the pious forms of expression adopted by the Port Royalists. Moreover, new ideas and aspirations took possession of his mind. In honor of the royal marriage he wrote an ode entitled

Born, Paris, France, 1622
Died, Paris, France, 1675
This document was originally published in Minute History of the Drama Purchase " T IS a mighty stroke at any vice to make it the laughing stock of everybody; for men will easily suffer reproof; but they can by no means endure mockery. They will consent to be wicked but not ridiculous." [ These are the words of the man who is rated by most critics as the greatest comic dramatist of all times and considered worthy to stand with Sophocles and Shakespeare . They were written in defense of the play, Tartuffe , ranked as his most outstanding and most representative play. For in the 17th century, as in ours, powerful cliques attempted to censor every play that did not happen to coincide with their own views or selfish interests. We can realize the bitterness of the campaign against Tartuffe from the fact that it was not finally licensed for public performance until more than three years after its first performance before Louis XIV. "Molière" was in reality only the stage name assumed when, as a young man, the embryo genius joined a group of strolling players. So famous did he make it, that few of us today recognize the surname "Poquelin." Molière's father was a prosperous tradesman, upholsterer to the King by appointment. Since this was a hereditary honor, the son shrewdly made use of it to establish and strengthen himself in the King's favor, when, after twelve years in the provinces, he returned to Paris.
