The Role of the Ideal Citizen: W.O. Mitchell's Who Has Seen the Wind BreeAnne Robertson One of the founding messages in W.O. Mitchell's Who Has Seen the Wind is that the ideal citizen must help bridge the gap between the dialectical tension of rural and urban environments; between society and the vast Canadian prairie. This connection is in attempt to find harmony within oneself and the world one lives in. In Mitchell's novel, the protagonist Brian leads the reader in and around his Saskatchewan town, allowing glimpses into the lives of the people who live there and the place they all share. Throughout Brian's growth, he learns a little every day. Both the natural world and the civilized world serve as tools to guide Brian to discover what he longs to understand: the "ultimate meaning of the cycle of life" and one's role within it (Mitchell preface). Brian, who is only four at the beginning of the novel, struggles to find clarity in his young life: Men do not understand how a thing which is torn in different directions comes into accord with itself – harmony in contrarity…. HERACLITUS. (Grace 117)

Erakat: Mitchell report can provide a way out
Saeb Erakat (CNN) Palestinian peace negotiator Saeb Erakat joined CNN's Lou Waters by phone after the release of the Mitchell committee's report on ending the violence in the Middle East. He spoke about the report and about remarks by Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, who said the two sides should not waste any more time and should establish an immediate cease-fire. SAEB ERAKAT : Well, first of all, let me say about the Mitchell report, we welcome the Mitchell report. We are willing to treat it as an integral part of a whole. We need to find mechanisms and we welcome the fact that the United States has welcomed this report, the European Union has welcomed this report, the United Nations had welcomed this report. And I hope that what I heard Mr. Peres saying about the settlements, I think that it's a game of deceit there, to say that there have been no settlements or confiscation of land. If you take Gaza Strip, 360 kilometers, 20 percent of Gaza is reserved for the 3,000 settlers amid 1.2 million Palestinians, 45 percent of the shores of Gaza have been occupied by the settlers. VIDEO Saeb Erakat, the chief Palestinian negotiator, calls on Israel to accept the report 'as a whole' (May 21)

W. O. Mitchell was born in Weyburn in 1914, and lived there throughout most of his early life, except for several years spent in the southern U.S. fighting his case of tuberculosis. After 1930, he attended the University of Manitoba, but his studies were cut short by a recurrence of TB. He thereafter worked in several cities at a wide variety of jobs, and began to work seriously at writing. In 1940 he enrolled at the University of Alberta, and received his B.A. and teaching certificate. He met his wife Merna there, and had three of his stories published before he began teaching high school in small towns in Alberta. In 1947, his first novel, Who Has Seen the Wind , was published: it met with immediate popularity and critical acclaim which allowed him to devote himself entirely to writing. In 1948 he moved to Toronto to become the fiction editor at Maclean's magazine. At this time he wrote the hugely popular Jake and the Kid series for CBC Radio, which continued over eight years and 320 episodes. In 1951, he moved to High River, Alberta, where he continued to write the radio series along with his other works. He released two novels and several plays over the next 17 years. Between 1968 and 1988 he wrote another four novels and several dramatic works as he taught creative writing at Canadian universities. In 1973, he was made an officer of the Order of Canada; in 1989 he won the Stephen Leacock award for

Features Interviews ... On The Spot The Seven White Masks of Scaramouche Jones He's the Tottenham supporting Jewish socialist who achieved cult status playing an anti-semitic Tory devoted to West Ham. Warren Mitchell is happy enough to be remembered as, even identified with, the foul mouthed Alf Garnett, but with a clutch of critically acclaimed theatre roles to his credit, he's never found himself typecast. Jo Morris visited him at home in Highgate to hear about his latest role for BBC Radio 4 - the centenarian clown Scaramouche Jones.

"Stop scratching!" Warren Mitchell yells at me five minutes into our interview. "Sorry?" I splutter, nearly falling off my chair. "All that scratching! Stop it!" Oh dear. "I've been bitten, and it's really itchy" I explain as way of an apology. "Well stop it!" he barks, "it makes the act seem lousy."
Blimey, lose the slightly theatrical Oxbridge accent but retain pretty much everything else about the barrel-chested figure shouting at me in a pair of old jogging bottoms and you realize that art and life have become blurred. Warren Mitchell could be his most famous creation to date: ranting curmudgeon Alf Garnett. And he doesn't like scratchers.

Reprinted from Who Has Seen the Wind by W. O. Mitchell: Forbsie's fat face shone. "Do we have to line up?" he said to Artie. "Everybody does," Artie answered, his face contorting at the offending glasses. "The girls go in the girls' door an' the boys go in the boys' door. You better not let 'em catch you going in the girls' door." "Why not?" asked Brian. "You're not s'posed to. There's two toilets. There's the girls' toilet on the girls' side an' the boys' on the boys' side in the basement." "Is there!" said Forbsie. "That's where old Tinhead is." Artie referred to Mr. Briggs, the school janitor, said to have a silver plate in his head ever since he had served with the Princess Pats in the war. Ahead of them and behind them small groups of children made their way to the school on the eastern edge of the town. "There's the China Kids," said Artie. Brian saw them, the Wongs, Tang and Vooie. It was Vooie's first day at school, and his sister, Tang, with the protectiveness of an older sister, had the collar of his coat clenched tight in her hand. Brian had seen the Wong children often, for they had grown up on that section of gray cement that ran before their father's Bluebird Café. Now that the mother, a small amber woman brought from China by Wong to bear him Tang and Vooie, had died, the father had left Vooie to his sister's care. He cooked meals for the children, and that was all. Brian knew Wong too, a small, stooped Chinese with a white mustache, who wore summer and winter a rooster-comb-toque. Brian had seen him often behind the café counter with its welter of cigarette and tobacco packets, its jaw breakers, licorice plugs, whips, pipes, and staring fried-egg candies.

If it be a no-brainer adventure or a plot full of relentless debauchery you're looking for, I suggest you avoid this book entirely. However, if you seek a deeply touching novel of intelligence and substance, indeed I urge you to read "Who Has Seen The Wind". It portrays the story of a prairie boy's initiation into the mysteries of life, as he discovers death, God, and the spirit that moves through everything: the wind.
