Guest Actor Biography
Page 89 of 127 Warren Mitchell Captain Jason, The Golden Fleece
Keller, The Charmers
Brodny, Two's a Crowd
Brodny, The See-Through Man by Pete Stampede Warren Mitchell will forever be linked with his character, or maybe that should be alter-ego, of bigoted, small-minded, loud-mouthed Alf Garnett, the comedically monstrous Cockney who dominated the ground-breaking series Till Death Us Do Part (BBC, 1965-75), later to be equally successfully (and controversially) transmogrified into All In The Family's Archie Bunker. Quite an achievement for the "sophisticated, left-wing Jewish actor," as playwright Peter Nichols once described him. Given Alf's suspicions of anything pertaining to the Left politically, Mitchell's repeated casting as a Soviet apparatchik (albeit one as daft as Brodny/Keller) in The Avengers is all the more ironic. He was born in London in 1926; his Russian-Jewish grandparents had fled to Britain in 1910. His real name is Warren Misell; he says he regrets anglicising it now, as if you remind people what your name is often enough, they'll remember eventually. During WW2, while serving in the Royal Air Force, he managed to get onto a six-month course at Exeter College, Oxford, alongside another would-be actor called Richard Burton; later biographies of Burton tended to overlook the fact that the university only made these short courses possible because most of the students were in the services, but it was still quite an achievement for the Jewish North Londoner, and Welsh coal-miner's son, respectively. After the war, Mitchell studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), where

Who Was W.O.? W.O. Mitchell, the only Canadian author known by his initials, was born William Ormond Mitchell on March 13, 1914 in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. The author's vivid descriptions of prairie life are based on his early years spent in the Canadian prairies. Employed as the fiction editor for Maclean's in Toronto from 1948 to 1951, Mitchell also became known as a gifted teacher and taught creative writing at the University of Alberta and was Director of the Writing Division at the Banff Centre for Fine Arts. He soon became Writer-in-Residence at several universities: The University of Calgary, the University of Toronto's Massey College, York University in Toronto, and the University of Windsor. In 1947, his first novel Who Has Seen the Wind, now a Canadian classic, was published to great critical acclaim and made into a film production in 1977. Several other novels followed, with the best loved How I Spent My Summer Holidays in 1981 and Roses Are Difficult Here in 1990. In 1997, the W.O. Mitchell Literary Prize was established in memory of Mitchell's mentor and teacher, F.M. Salter. The prize is awarded to writers who have acted as successful mentors to other fellow writers.

Sometimes years must pass before a classic, more particularly a Canadian classic achieves recognition. Happily this has not been the case with Who Has Seen the Wind , a re-creation of prairie boyhood that has been celebrated since its first appearance in 1947. The well-loved story of Brian O'Connal's early youth and of his growing awareness of pain, death and sorrow as well as of the richness and beauty of life that brings him to the brink of young manhood, has mellowed gracefully with the years. The present handsome edition is doubly to be treasured in that it has been illustrated by another son of the prairies, the notable Canadian artist William Kurelek. Eight full-page plates, as well as numerous pen-and-ink drawings, are worthy of a book that belongs in every library collection. I think of it as a rock ‘n’ roll fairytale, a rock musical... And it’s my version of some of the films I grew up with like "Harold and Maude", "All That Jazz", and "Nashville". Where did you get your inspiration from? I had the Plato myth about the origins of love first and then there was an autobiographical element to it. My Dad was a US Army general in Berlin and Hedwig was based on a woman who was our babysitter. She was a German army wife but also a prostitute and provided the visual inspiration for Hedwig. A Marlene Deitrich style figure with big hair. Did you have to battle to keep your vision of "Hedwig" intact on screen?

Born in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, author, essayist, playwright, radio and television dramatist and raconteur W.O. Mitchell is known for his quintessential book of Prairie boyhood, Who Has Seen the Wind, published in 1947.
His Alberta connection began in the 1950s when he set up residence in High River, south of Calgary. He would later move to Calgary, which would remain his home until his death in February 1998.
Throughout his career, Mitchell would write for CBC Radio (Jake and the Kid), film (produced and unproduced screenplays for Alien Thunder and Who Has Seen the Wind), serve as a fiction editor for Maclean's Magazine, and publish fiction (Who Has Seen the Wind, The Kite, Jake and the Kid, According to Jake and the Kid, Vanishing Point, Roses Are Difficult Here, For Art's Sake, How I Spent My Summer Holidays, Since Daisy Creek and Ladybug, Ladybug). A collection of performance pieces presented at readings and other dramatic events was released posthumously as An Evening With W.O. Mitchell. Scripts to his plays For Those in Peril on the Sea, The Devil's Instrument, The Black Bonspiel of Wullie MacCrimmon, The Kite, and Back to Beulah were collected and published by Gage Publishing in 1982 as Dramatic W.O. Mitchell.

By 1987, when W.O. Mitchell visited Fort McMurray, the 73-year-old Calgary-based author had published his seventh book, Since Daisy Creek, and was completing work on his childhood-mystery novel, Ladybug, Ladybug…
The Weyburn, Sask.-born, Florida-raised, former High River and Edmonton, Alta. resident was a beloved author from the publication of his first novel in 1947, Who Has Seen the Wind. The book, which tells the story of a boy's life on the Saskatchewan prairie, has become a classic of Canadian literature. His career would carry him through the worlds of literature, journalism, radio, television, film, musical and dramatic theatre, and an active life as a raconteur.
Mitchell's writing students owe him perhaps the biggest debt. Using his freefall approach to creative writing, he taught at all educational levels from elementary school through to university and fine arts schools. His students include such award-winning authors as L.R. Wright, Diane Schoemperlen and Joan Clark, all of whom attended the Banff School of Fine Arts in 1976.

Remote sensing has underlain most of my work following my M.Sc., during which I focussed on land applications of stereo and multispectral data. Data of extraterrestrial planetary surface processes is poor relative to the Earth, hence it is extremely important to utilise all remotely sensed data to its fullest, and so the remote sensing techniques I learned early on in my career have proved an extremely useful supplement to my volcanic modelling. During and immediately after write-up of my Ph.D. thesis I worked at UCL, briefly on the LandMap project, the goal of which was to produce a high resolution SAR-derived topographic map of the U.K., and then on the EC-funded Cloudmap project, which utilised a variety of remote sensing techniques to derive cloud properties. In both projects I used the stereo-photogrammetric skills developed during my M.Sc. to perform high quality image matching. In the case of Cloudmap, these were used for the derivation of cloudtop heights from stereo ATSR-2 and MISR data. I was also involved in the intercomparison and validation of ATSR-2, MOS O2-A band and ground-based cloud top height derivation methods, resulting in a paper that have been accepted by IJRS. Most recently I have been focussing on the derivation of quantitative data from MOC image, MOLA topographic and THEMIS thermal multispectral image data of volcanic and hydrologic features on Mars, for use in environmental and geophysical studies.
