Scots by birth, Alan Milne spent his childhood in London, where his father was a preparatory schoolmaster. His early education owed much to the skills of a young teacher and mentor H.G. Wells years later, Milne described Wells as "a great writer and a great friend." He continued his education at Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge. He bequethed his original handwritten manuscripts of Winnie-the-Pooh and The House At Pooh Corner to the College Library. While an undergraduate at Cambridge he edited Granta for a year his first literary efforts were published in the humourous magazine Punch, where a month after his twenty-fourth birthday he started work as Assistant Editor, remaining there until the outbreak of the First World War. In 1913, Milne married Dorothy Daphne de Selincourt and they had one son, Christopher. Although a noted pacifist, Milne enlisted in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment and served in France. His famous denunciation of war entitled

Alan Alexander Milne was born in Hampstead, London on 18th January 1882. His parents John Vine and Sarah Maria Milne, already had two boys Ken and Barry. Both parents were school teachers. Alan entered Henley House school in September 1888, and in 1893 he won a scholarship to Westminster, and joined Ken there in the Autumn. Alan progressed to Trinity College, Cambridge in 1900. He became editor of of "Granta" an undergraduate magazine, and in 1906 aged only 24 he became assistant editor of "Punch" a satirical magazine. Alan married Daphne de Selincourt on June 24th 1913. With the start of the war in 1914 Milne was commissioned to the Warwickshire regiment. While serving in France he developed trench fever and was sent home. Milne spent his time writing plays and still contributed to "Punch". His first big success came 1920 with his play "Mr Pim Passes By"

A. A. Milne
Alan Alexander Milne was born in London on January 18, 1882, the third and youngest son of a schoolmaster. At age eleven, he won a scholarship to the Westminster School. He went on to attend Cambridge University and became the editor of the undergraduate paper, Granta. After graduating from Cambridge in 1903, Milne moved back to London with enough savings to live for one year. He was determined to become a writer. By 1906, he had been offered the position of Assistant Editor at Punch, a classic British humor magazine. He remained at Punch for the next eight years.
In 1913, Milne married Dorothy de Selincourt (known as Daphne) and moved to a house in London's Chelsea section. When World War I broke out, he enlisted in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, eventually serving in France. During his training period, he wrote his first play, Wurzel-Flummery, which was produced in London in 1917.
By 1919, having completed one book and several plays, Milne finally achieved financial independence. The Theatre Guild in New York City produced his play, Mr. Pim Passes By, previously staged in London. It was as great a success there as it had been on the London stage. Milne was now well established as a witty and fashionable London playwright. In 1920, Christopher Robin Milne was born, an event that was to change the history of children s literature. In 1923, during a rainy holiday in Wales, Milne began work on a collection of verses for children. The result was When We Were Very Young, published in 1924.

ONCE UPON A TIME AGO, a very long time ago now, about last Friday, Winnie-the-Pooh lived in a forest all by himself under the name of Sanders. The Morning Walk
When Anne and I go out a walk,
We hold each other's hand and talk
Of all the things we mean to do
When Anne and I are forty-two.
And when we've thought about a thing,
Like bowling hoops or bicycling,
Or falling down on Anne's balloon,
We do it in the afternoon.
-from Now We Are Six
Wind on the Hill No one can tell me, Nobody knows, Where the wind comes from, Where the wind goes. It's flying from somewhere As fast as it can, I couldn't keep up with it, Not if I ran. But if I stopped holding The string of my kite, It would blow with the wind For a day and a night. And then when I found it, Wherever it blew

Milne wrote many different kinds of books, humorous verses and light comedies as a staff member of Punch , and the detective novel THE RED HOUSE MYSTERY, which was severely criticized by Raymond Chandler . But Milne's most popular works are WINNIE-THE-POOH (1926) and THE HOUSE AT POOH CORNER (1928). In spite of his fame as a children's book writer, Milne was not "inordinately fond" of children. "On Wednesday, when the sky is blue,
And I have nothing else to do,
I sometimes wonder if it's true
That who is what and what is who."

A.A. Milne
A.A. Milne's characters are famous around the world. Walt Disney made them into movie stars. One of the reasons that the movies are so special is that they stick very close to Milne's books.
If you are a fan of the movies then check out The House At Pooh Corner and see how much of the text you already have memorized. They are filled with funny situations, friends that care about each other and interesting language. His books are special to both children and adults.
His two poetry books are When We Were Very Young and Now We Are Six. Many of the poems are very funny. They are tough for young children to read. One problem seems to be that they are always printed in the small type commonly used in all books during the 1920's. Hey parents - they are perfect read-alouds! Lots of fun to read and discuss.

Sometimes, sections overlap the topics I have designated or are not exactly in chronological order, but for the most part... The following links will take you directly to that specific section on this page. A short note on names. Alan refers to A. A. Milne. Billy Moon refers to Christopher Milne.
Family
Alan Alexander Milne was born January 18, 1882, the youngest of three sons to Sarah Maria and John Vine Milne. His father ran a school for young boys, Henley House, in which Alan, and his older brothers, David Barrett Milne (Barry) and Kenneth John Milne (Ken) grew up in. John Vine Milne was the eldest son of a Congregational minister (William Milne, who married Harriet Newell Barrett while a missionary in Jamaica in 1845) and had served in many odd jobs before settling on teaching. He had been a clerk in the counting-house of a biscuit factory, apprenticed in an engineering firm, and was an usher in various schools before he finally earned his B.A. and became a school teacher. J.V. married Sarah Maria Heginbotham (called Maria in the family) on August 27, 1878. My only regret was that we had no daughters. But my wife used to always say, "Sons are good enough for me." Wird fett, treibt er nicht manchmal Sport.
Und das ist auch kein Wunder, nein:
Sein einziger Sport ist auf der Welt,
Doch fehlt ihm meist die Energie,
Von neuem zu erklimmen sie.
Fettsein ist was, was keinem frommt
