Joaquin Miller
by Janice Albert Time works on literary reputation in such a way that, when the glacier of critical opinion is past, only El Capitan remains, splendidly removed from the fragmented shards and rubble ground to gravel underfoot. The agency of chance in creating El Capitan is forgotten. If the remaining knobs and knolls could speak of their own hopes and dreams, we would smile gently at their pretension. "You, too, aspired to greatness? Oh, puleeze." This statue of the Poet of the Sierras
is in Oakland's Joaquin Miller Park The shapes themselves-triangle, circle, square-suggest a child's basic play set. His house remains, The Abby, California Historical Landmark no. 107, along with a "Sanctuary to Memory," where he stored his mementos and where his grieving daughter Juanita created a replica of her father lying in bed as he had during the last days of his life, surrounded by his boots and other memorabilia. In this vicinity is a statue of himself seated rather woodenly on a horse. This is the only monument not of his own design. The work of Kisa Beeck, it was commissioned by Juanita to mark the spot where her grandmother's cottage once stood. The seventh monument is a massive stone stage, approached by three broad steps. On this elevated platform, Miller wished to be cremated in an open funeral pyre in the manner of the Native Americans he so admired.

Joaquin Miller
Joaquin Miller was the penname of the hyperbolical American eccentric Cincinnatus Heine (or Hiner) Miller September 8 , or November 10 February 17 ). Born in Indiana , he moved to Oregon and later to California where he had a variety of occupations, including mining-camp cook who came down with scurvy from eating what he cooked, lawyer and a judge, a newspaper writer and a Pony Express rider. After spending several years in New York and Europe , he settled in California, where he grew fruit and published his poems. Called (mainly by himself) the "Poet of the Sierras" and the "Byron of the Rockies", he was more of a celebrity in England than in his native United States Miller is best remembered today for one of his poems:
“In men whom men condemn as ill
I find so much of goodness still.
In men whom men pronounce divine
I find so much of sin and blot
I do not dare to draw a line
Between the two, where God has not.”
His poems include "Songs of the Sierras," "Songs of the Sun-Lands," and "The Ship in the Desert."

Description: Joaquin Miller is another short easy ride appropriate for beginners or those looking for an easy day. The route goes out Tunnel and across Skyline to Joaquin Miller. But, instead of heading right to Redwood, it instead heads left and returns to Berkeley via neighborhood streets (and a bike path) in Claremont, a neighborhood of Oakland. The way back is tricky so make sure you go with someone who knows where they're going the first time. Distance: 20.35 miles
    Climbing: 2112 ft.
    Difficulty: Easy
Time: 1.25-1.75 hrs. Mile 0.0 - Sproul Plaza to Tunnel Road. Mile 6.34 - Continue straight on Skyline past Grizzly Peak. Mile 11.49 - Turn right on Joaquin Miller at the light. The descent is fast and wide-open, but mind the stop sign at the bottom. Mile 12.67

A Concise Biography of Joaquin Miller
Joaquin Miller was born Cincinnatus Hiner Miller on September 8, 1837. In the introduction to Volume One of JOAQUIN MILLER'S POEMS, published by Harr Wagner Publishing Co. in 1917 however, Miller wrote, "I see that my birthday is set down in some books for 1841, and in others for 1842. This comes from the loss of the Bible...Papa gave the former year, according to his recollection of the trivial event, while mother insisted on the latter, both giving the same day of the month....I was born in a covered wagon, I am told at or about the time it crossed the line dividing Indiana from Ohio." In a 1967 Biography by O.W. Frost, Twayne Publishers Inc, however, Miller's biographer establishes 1837 as the year of Millers birth. Frost also identifies Miller's covered wagon birth as a fabrication. The name Joaquin was adapted from the legendary California bandit, Joaquin Murietta. Joaquin Miller described his decision to adopt the name at the conclusion of the Poem "Joaquin Murietta," in Volume II of his collected works.

Click Here. POEMS BY joaquin miller miller, joaquin. The picturesque career of joaquin miller surpasses any romance that came from his hand.
    http://www.poetry-archive.com/m/miller_joaquin.html
POEMS BY JOAQUIN MILLER: MILLER, JOAQUIN . Born in Wabash District, Indiana, November 10, 1841; died at "The Heights," above San Francisco, California, 1913. The picturesque career of Joaquin Miller surpasses any romance that came from his hand. When a lad he tramped from his home in Oregon to the Sacramento Valley where gold fields were being opened and did whatever he could turn his hand to about the camps. He lived familiarly with the Indians and passed through many adventures in returning to his home in Oregon. Here he studied law, which he practiced for some time in Canyon City, and became a judge of Grant County. In 1870 he went to London with the manuscript of "Songs of the Sierras." Here he met Browning Arnold , and other poets of the period and created a sensation in conventional London by his romantic personality. After his return to America he spent some time in journalistic work in Washington, D.C., but left it for California where he established himself in a beautiful home on "The Heights" above the Golden Gate. Save for occasional excursions, such as his trip to the Klondike, his remaining years were spent at this home. Joaquin Miller had great power to invoke the wild and majestic aspects of nature, and while he was often the victim of his facility, at his best he was a poet of rare gifts and unexcelled in his field as the interpreter of Wester life and landscape.
