If you've read Miller, and perhaps some things about Miller, you know the incredibly rich life he lived, the millions of people he touched with his writing, the lasting friendships he had.
Here in Big Sur, the place Miller found during his Air-Conditioned Nightmare search for a place to settle, we have a perfect place to build on, preserve and champion what Miller did. There is a growing collection of material for anyone interested in the literature of this country and we invite people from all over the world to perform, write, sing and experience this place.
Many of Miller's old friends stop by the Library telling stories of Henry's generosity, his inspiring spirit and what his work has meant to them. Those kinds of visits provide some of the highlights of being here.
We're rebuilding the Library website, look for information, links and other Miller-related information soon!

Roger Jackson completed The Henry Miller Bibliography Volume I in 1993. Lawrence J. Shifreen had started a Bibliography in the late 70's and he was contacted by Jackson early in 1990 to continue the effort. That volume has over 1,100 pages with photos of many of his books. Together with Wm. Ashley, the Bibliography was corrected and updated with an additional 500 pages in a second Volume in 1994. This is a work in progress. The two volumes have been combined and further updated. From the list of the "A" titles, which excludes pamphlets, letters and flyers, there are links to the variations of his books. The number is from the combined bibliography with new books added. A complete listing of the "B" section with number, title, year, publisher and contents is listed in these files. As this is a dynamic, ongoing process, any information about additional titles or corrections would be greatly appreciated. Please e-mail them or any additional comments to Wm. Ashley:

Henry Miller and Lawrence Durrell in 1962 Welcome to Henry Miller, American Author , a site dedicated to the writing and art of one of America's most controversial artists. It is difficult to remain neutral about Henry Miller (1891-1980). With respect to his life or his writing, one is sure to find ardent supporters and vociferous critics. What is strange then, is the relative lack of critical discussion surrounding the large body of his writing, particularly in the prevailing culture which fetes the Beats so heartily. However, Miller is far from obscure; his influence on twentieth century art, literature and popular culture is extensive, especially in Europe. As always, your suggestions are welcome. Most of us imagine that we are travelling in a straight line, whereas the truth is that we are moving in circles. We change direction almost without thinking. Headed for Mexico, we land in China. (And like as not, without the slightest loss of face.) The ambitious ones set out to storm the world, only to end up like so many dead leaves scattered by the wind. "Draconian Postscript"

A Cineman Syndicate feature DEJA VU: INTERVIEW WITH HENRY JAGLOM
    * By Prairie Miller * Though Henry Jaglom can be counted as one of the founding fathers of American indies, he's at heart just an old fashioned romantic kind of guy, as evidenced by his latest movie, Deja Vu. The visually and verbally lush story about destiny in love, which is a sort of family affair starring Jaglom's wife Victoria Font, and Vanessa Redgrave and her actress mom Rachel Kempson, crosses generations and continents in a magical realism flight of fancy. Jaglom also had lots to say about his inspirations and influences, that include creatively teaming at one time or another with Jack Nicholson, Dennis Hopper and Orson Welles in works that helped define the shape and scope of contemporary independent film. PRAIRIE MILLER: I'm taking a guess that your latest movie Deja Vu was a real obsession of the imagination for you. HENRY JAGLOM: I've been obsessed all my life with this story. I wanted to make Deja Vu for twenty five years. I've been obsessed with the idea that someday you run into this person, and you realize that whatever state your life is in, that this is the person you were meant to be with. And that your entire life changes on a dime the second you meet them. Also, what is it that pulls people together, and what magic exists in the world that makes two people who have grown up in different times and different places connect so totally that they feel they've known each other all their lives?

The Devil at Large: Erica Jong on Henry Miller Grove Press (1993)
    327 pages; paperback
"If you must limit yourself to one book on Henry Miller, this is the one" Library Journal A perfect match of author and subject, The Devil at Large is Jong's celebration of Henry Miller's life the ebullience, the contradictions, the humor, and above all the freedom that defined his life and art. In a blend of biography, autobiography, scholarship and polemic, Jong evaluates and charts the life and legacy of Miller, the archetypical sexualist whose notorious Tropic of Cancer and subsequent books ultimately changed the boundaries of literature. "What Henry had that others so resented was wholeness...His exuberance, the happiness that comes across in his work, was visible in him even when he was old and ill. The voice he found expressed the abundance of the man. It was not the sex the puritans hated and feared. It was the abundance." The Devil at Large reveals the convictions shared by Jong and Miller that one must accept dung to have angels, and that the truest virtue is to be 'on the side of life'.

Miller, Henry Miller, Henry, , American author, b. New York City. Miller sought to reestablish the freedom to live without the conventional restraints of civilization. His books are potpourris of sexual description, quasi-philosophical speculation, reflection on literature and society, surrealistic imaginings, and autobiographical incident. After living in Paris in the 1930s, he returned to the United States and settled in Big Sur, Calif. Miller's first two works, Tropic of Cancer (Paris, 1934) and Tropic of Capricorn (Paris, 1939), were denied publication in the U.S. until the early 1960s because of alleged obscenity. The Colossus of Maroussi Sexus Plexus (1953), and Nexus (1960). In 1976 Norman Mailer edited a selection of Miller's writings, Genius and Lust.
