    Henry Miller
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Henry Miller December 26 June 7 New York City ), was an American novelist , whose novel Tropic of Cancer led to a series of controversial obscenity trials in the United States pornography laws of the time. In early life, he had tried a variety of jobs and briefly attended the City College of New York . In , he moved to Paris France where he lived until the outbreak of World War II . During his first winter in Paris, he came close to starving. Sleeping in a different place each night, scrounging free meals whenever possible, he chanced upon Richard Osborn , an American lawyer, who gave him a free room in his apartment. Each morning, Osborn left ten francs on the kitchen table. In the fall of , Henry Miller got a job at the Tribune as a proofreader, thanks to his friend Alfred Perlès who worked there. He took the opportunity to submit some of his articles under Perlès name, since only the editorial staff were permitted to publish in the paper. That same year, at the Villa Seurat in Montparnasse , he wrote the novel Tropic of Cancer , published in His anti- puritanical book(s) did much to free the discussion of sexual subjects in American writing from both legal and social restrictions. He continued to write novels that were banned in the

Research Fellow Expertise: Biotechnology; genetic engineering; bioterrorism; government regulation of science and technology, especially pharmaceutical development and biotechnology; regulatory reform
PDF summary: Guide to Scholars 2003
H enry I. Miller, M.S., M.D., is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution. His research focuses on public policy toward science and technology, especially pharmaceutical development and the new biotechnology. His work often emphasizes the excessive costs of government regulation and models for regulatory reform. Miller joined the Food and Drug Administration in 1979 and served in a number of posts involved with the new biotechnology. He was the medical reviewer for the first genetically engineered drugs evaluated by the FDA and was instrumental in the rapid licensing of human insulin and human growth hormone. He served in several posts, including special assistant to the FDA commissioner, with responsibility for biotechnology issues; from 1989 to 1994, he was the founding director of the FDA's Office of Biotechnology. During his government service, Miller participated frequently on various expert and policy panels as a representative of the FDA or the U.S. government. While a government official, Miller was the recipient of numerous awards and citations. Miller's primary contributions have been in four areas: (1) as a federal official, crafting and implementing science-based regulation and (2) explaining these policies to regulated industry, the scientific community, and the public; as a member of international panels and groups of experts, moving consensus toward the scientific view of risk assessment and management; (3) making science and technology and their regulation more widely understood, via articles in newspapers and magazines; and (4) performing research on and analyses of various issues related to science and technology, including the description of models for regulatory reform.

The Beat Generation Writers from the Beat Era of American Literature henry miller. ( 18911980) henry miller was born December 26, 1891 in New York, New York
    http://www.levity.com/corduroy/millerh.htm
Henry Miller I believe that today more than ever a book should be sought after even if it has only one great page in it: we must search for fragments, splinters, toenails, anything that has ore in it, anything that is capable of resuscitating the body and soul. It may be that we are doomed, that there is no hope for us, any of us, but if that is so then let us set up a last agonizing, bloodcurdling howl, a screech of defiance, a war whoop! Away with lamentation! Away with elegies and dirges! Away with biographies and histories, and libraries and museums! Let the dead eat the dead. Let us living ones dance about the rim of the crater, a last expiring dance. But a dance! Henry Miller, Tropic of Cancer, 1934
Henry Miller was born December 26, 1891 in New York, New York. During his first year of life, Miller's family moved to Brooklyn, where the whole of his childhood was spent. In 1909, Miller graduated from high school and entered City College of New York where he stayed for only two months. Not being able to bear the academic routine, Miller went to work at a variety of jobs. Everything from a cab driver to librarian. In 1917, Miller met and married the first of five wives, Beatrice Sylvas Wickens, with whom he has one child. Miller took a job with Western Union telegraph service in 1920 where his first endeavor into writing took place. Miller's boss came to him one day with the idea that someone should write a book about messengers. He proposed something along the lines of "Horatio Alger," what Miller came up with was "Clipped Wings." This is a story of twelve messengers along the lines of Dostoevsky, rather than Horatio Alger. Miller wrote about "gentle souls, insulted and injured, who run amok or suffer violence; the stories are full of bitterness and horror, ending in murder or suicide, usually both" (Wickes 1974:170-192). Miller realized that the work was a failure because he knew nothing of writing, but this endeavor spawned the urge to learn about writing.

Because of the frank portrayals of sexuality, Miller's major novels have been banned in several countries. In the 1960s Miller became one of the most widely read US authors. In his autobiographical works Miller created a myth out of his own life, about a free-spirited, penniless American writer who has a number of affairs and spends his time between New York and Paris. "The bulk of my readers, I have often observed, fall into two distinct groups: in the one group those who claim to be repelled or disgusted by the liberal dosage of sex, and in the other those who are delighted to find that this element form such a large ingredient." (from The World of Sex Henry Valentine Miller was born in New York, N.Y, as the only child of German-American working-class parents. His father, Heinrich Miller, was a tailor. Louise (Nieting) Miller, his mother, never showed much affection toward her son - she used to hit her children, also Miller's sister, who was mentally handicapped. At school Miller was a very good pupil. At the age of seventeen Miller visited a brothel for the first time, and contracted gonorrhea. He attended the college of the City of New York and left after two months. In STAND STILL LIKE THE HUMMINGBIRD (1962) the author explained that it was Spenser's

    20. American Legends Interviews..... Henry Miller Remembered
an exclusive interview on henry miller with his close friend and lawyer, the late Elmer Gertz, noted Chicago First Amendment attorney.
    http://www.americanlegends.com/Interviews/miller.htm
    Henry Miller Remembered
Elmer Gertz and Henry Miller (For many years, the late Henry Miller was considered the "Bad Boy" of American literature. His novel, The Tropic of Cancer , first published in France, dealt with the ribald exploits of expatriate writers in Paris during the 1930s. For over twenty years, the book was banned in the USA. Elmer Gertz successfully defended the book's publication in Illinois. After the ban was lifted, Gertz and Miller became friendsa friendship the lawyer recalls in this exclusive interview with American Legends.)
AL: Why was Miller considered a "dirty" writer? EG: Because he wrote Tropic of Cancer and several other books which used the so-called "four letter" words and were very explicit sexually. AL: Some critics, like Gore Vidal, have claimed that Miller was self-indulgent.
EG: Henry Miller wrote exactly as he lived and felt. He tried to avoid all literary devices such as verbal inhibitions. AL: Miller has been criticized by some feminists.
