Edna St. Vincent Millay, born in 1892 in Maine, grew to become one of the premier twentieth-century lyric poets. She was also an accomplished playwright and speaker who often toured giving readings of her poetry. All of that was in her public life, but her private life was equally interesting. An unconventional childhood led into an unconventional adulthood. She was an acknowledged bisexual who carried on many affairs with women, an affection for which is sometimes evident in her poems and plays. She did marry, but even that part of her life was somewhat unusual, with the marriage being quite open, and extramarital affairs, though not documented, are quite probable.
At the young age of seven, Edna's mother asked her husband to leave the family home. After that point he held a negligible role in the girl's life. Edna and her two sisters moved, with their mother, to Newburyport, Massachusetts where, to Edna's delight, she was given piano lessons. Edna (who insisted on being called Vincent and who even entered writing contests under that name) and her sisters were encouraged in their literary and musical leanings by their mother. Then, in highschool, Millay's interests expanded to include theater. She performed in numerous plays and wrote a Halloween play for her classmates to act out.

Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892-1950) [pseud. di Nancy Boyd] L'altro sguardo: antologia delle poetesse del '900. Guido Davico Bonino e Paola Mastrocola (a cura di). Milano: Mondadori, 1996
So quel che voglio e ho fatto la mia scelta;
nè a tradire. Vorrei che tu capissi
che nel mio più segreto desiderio sogno sempre il mio bacio; ma non chiesero di bere ancora quelli che languivano nei deserti del Sud; puoi benedirmi, ma non piegarmi dopo avermi amata.

A very fine presentation of the early work of Edna St. Vincent Millay, one of our finest American poets. I find her work to be in a class of its own, reaching out to the human spirit. The presentation in this book of her first three published works really exposes the reader to Millay at the top of her form. For me, the notes and commentary of Editor Holly Peppe helped greatly. Dr. Peppe's analysis is extremely readable and shows a wonderful understanding of her subject. In her introduction Hol...

The Selected Poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay

Edna St. Vincent Millay is (in my opinion) one of the great 20th century poets, generally under-appreciated. Readers who buy this edition SHOULD BE WARNED that it's not a selection from her whole life's work, but only from her early poetry, which made her reputation but isn't necessarily her best. If you want a more comprehensive view of her work, including the later, more mature work, I think you'll have to get the Collected Poems and make your own 'selection'.

She wasn't a rock star she was poet Edna St. Vincent Millay. By Laura Miller "People who never in all their lives, except when in school and under compulsion, have held a book of poems in their hands, might well be attracted by the erotic autobiography of a fairly conspicuous woman, even if she did write poetry." So wrote Edna St. Vincent Millay toward the end of her life, in response to a suggestion from her publisher that she put together a volume of her love poems that would contain "a mellow Foreword in retrospect" confiding "when, where, and under what impulsion" she wrote each one. As her editor knew, such a foreword the first-person account of a legendary amorous career that included a formidable number of men and women, single and married would probably wind up consuming more pages than the poems themselves. Millay belonged to nearly the last generation of poet icons, people whose lives meant as much to their admirers as their work. In her youth she flirted with the idea of becoming an actress, and the genius so many people saw in her was inextricable from her ability to look and behave exactly like her audience's notion of a divinely inspired girl poet. She traveled the country, reading to packed halls of rapt listeners in a voice described as sounding like "a bronze bell" and "an axe on fresh wood." It's not that such bards no longer exist, it's just that now they inevitably carry a guitar; singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega is a better parallel to Millay than any of the mandarins writing poetry today.

Savage Beauty : The Life of Edna St. Vincent Millay > Customer Review #1: Savage Boredom.

This 540 page biography of one of Americas greatest poets could pass for barbiturates, morphine or any of the other cocktail of drugs poor Vincent had to take towards the end of her life to put her to sleep. If you are a a Millay admirer (as I am) you may have to rely on heavy doses of amphetamines to slug your way through it. Be forewarned. Millford relies on never before published material given to her by Norma, the poets sisterpresumably at the price of interjecting Norma into the story, who apparently suffers from avant-garde delusions that shes just about as frisky as her famous sibling. A small sin compared to the fact that a shoebox of letters doth not an autobiography make.

Edna St. Vincent Millay: Selected Poems (American Poets Project, 7) > Customer Review #1: Enchanting poems from an enchantress

The introduction to this collection of poetry says that Edna St. Vincent Millay has been criticized for not being sufficiently "modernist". He poems are too sentimental, too easy-to-read, and borrow too much from 18th century styles. Well the critics might be right but I love this poetry and plan to read more. Her most famous lines are here "My candle burns at both ends...it gives a lovely light", her first famous poem is here "Renascance"this spooky poem gained her a mentor and an education at Vassarand also present are poems from "Fatal Interview" and "Epitath for the Race of Man". My favorite poems are the short ones that talk of love: these are the easy-to-read poems dismissed by the critics.
