(from 'Sonnet XLVII', in Fatal Interview Edna St. Vincent Millay was born in Rockland, Maine, as the daughter of Henry Tolman Millay, a school principal, and Cora Lounella (Buzzelle) Millay. (Millay's middle name derived from the French priest St. Vincent de Paul) Her father had a weakness for poker playing, and although he deserted his family, Millay kept contact with him. After divorce in 1900 Cora Millay moved with her three daughters, Edna, Norma, and Kathleen, to Camden, into a small house in the poorest part of the town. To support her family she worked as a district nurse and was often away on assignment. Trained to be a singer, she coached town orchestras and wrote out scores for their members. She also encouraged her daughters in their musical and poetic ambitions, and taught Edna to write poetry at the age of five.

Biographic Sketch Deemed by Edmund Wilson as "a spokesman for the human spirit....with an intoxicating effect on people", Edna St. Vincent Millay was the first woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, for The Harp-Weaver and Other Poems published in 1923. Experiencing her creative heyday during the 1920's and 1930's, a time of excitement and great social change, Millay became renowned both as a "free spirit poet of early twentieth-century feminism" and an "accomplished lyric poet" who appealed to a wide-ranging and enduring audience.
With her red hair, arresting green eyes and melodious voice, the diminutive Millay, with her caustic observations, cynicism and biting wit, was a powerful voice for a young generation of women defiant of convention and experiencing with significant social change. Her classical education at Vassar was a counterpoint to her unconventional childhood and bohemian life in Greenwich Village following college, and both influences are readily seen in her work.
Millay, who often was called Vincent (her middle name is taken from the canonized French priest Vincent de Paul), wrote not only poetry, but fiction, articles for Vanity Fair magazine, numerous plays, and a libretto for The Kings Henchmen, first performed in 1927 at New York's Metropolitan Opera. She is particularly noted for her skillful rendering of the sonnet form, which has been praised for its "tension created between form and content". And later still, she became known for her rousing patriotic writings of the 1940's, during WWII.

Classroom Issues and Strategies
Students have few problems reading Millay's poetry because the poet is forthright in expressing her emotions, ideas, and experiences. Obviously such references as those to Euclid and Endymion require explanation. Occasionally the diction needs some explication because of Millay's fondness for archaic and Latinate words. Not much more is required than the teacher's ability to clarify some allusions and an occasional word or phrase. Any teacher of modern American literature should also have no problems with the references to city life and to issues of the times, which are generously sprinkled throughout Millay's work. As for accessibility, some benefit will come from placing Millay in the context of the poetry of the 1920s and 1930s as one of those like, for instance, Robert Frost , Archibald MacLeish, and Edward Arlington Robinson , who carried forward the more traditional verse form and techniques in the face of the experimentalism of T. S. Eliot

Her mother, single and divorced, raised Edna and her sisters. Inheriting a tendency toward poetry and singing from her mother, she gained experience reciting poems on a table top at Kalloch Reunions. Her wonderful poetry is grounded in the Knox Co., Maine landscape and Edna returned often for the summer. In 1923 she became the first woman to be awarded a Pulitzer Prize, and in 1981 she was commemorated with a U.S. postage stamp See also: " About Edna St. Vincent Millay ", by Elinor Collemer Johnson, from the 1999 Kalloch Newsletter.

http://www.theglassceiling.com/biographies/bio44.htm
WORKING TOGETHER INTO THE 21ST CENTURY ABOUT US BUSINESS EMPLOYMENT ENTERTAINMENT ... WOMEN Women: Resources Bios Glass Stories Calendar ... Orgs Edna St. Vincent Millay Edna St. Vincent Millay, twentieth-century poet and playwright, was best known for her lyrical poetry. She wrote many poems in traditional sonnet form, on topics such as love, fidelity, erotic desire, and feminist issues. What isn't as widely publicized is that she also acknowledged herself as bisexual and had many affairs with women before her marriage. It's not clear if she continued sexual involvement's with women after marriage (though it is quite possible), nor is it clear which of her poems are written about women rather than men.
She grew up in a different sort of familypast the age of seven, her father wasn't present, as her mother (Cora) asked him to leave. Cora was a nurse who encouraged Millay (called Vincent by her close friends) and her sisters in musical and literary pursuits. Millay was brought up to be self-sufficient and was taught that ambition was good, an upbringing reflected in her accomplishments of later years.
At her mother's encouragement, Millay entered her poem "Renascence" into a poetry contest and won fourth placed. When the poem was published, she gained literary recognition and earned a scholarship to Vassar. At Vassar, she continued to write poetry and became involved in theater. In 1922 one of her playsThe Harp Weaverwas awarded the Pulitzer Prize.
