John Stuart Mill: On Liberty John Stuart Mill, one of the foremost nineteenth-century spokesmen for liberalism, advocated Utilitarianism in ethics, i.e., the view that we should each act so as to promote the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people. Yet he was a champion of individual's rights, calling, among other things, for more power and freedom for women. In his treatise On Liberty he argues that in the past the danger had been that monarchs held power at the expense of the common people and the struggle was one of gaining liberty by limiting such governmental power. But now that power has largely passed into the hands of the people at large through democratic forms of government, the danger is that the majority denies liberty to individuals, whether explicitly through laws, which he calls "acts of public authority," or more subtly through morals and social pressure, which he calls "collective opinion." What does Mill mean by "the tyranny of the majority"? The aim, therefore, of patriots was to set limits to the power which the ruler should be

A person may cause evil to others not only by his actions but by his inaction, and in either case he is justly accountable to them for the injury.

If mankind minus one were of one opinion, then mankind is no more justified in silencing the one than the one - if he had the power - would be justified in silencing mankind.
John Stuart Mill
Indeed the dictum that truth always triumphs over persecution, is one of those pleasant falsehoods which men repeat after one another till they pass into common places, but which all experience refutes.

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

REPRESENTATIVE GOVERNMENT by John Stuart Mill PREFACE. T HOSE who have done me the honour of reading my previous writings will probably receive no strong impression of novelty from the present volume; for the principles are those to which I have been working up during the greater part of my life, and most of the practical suggestions have been anticipated by others or by myself. There is novelty, however, in the fact of bringing them together, and exhibiting them in their connection; and also, I believe, in much that is brought forward in their support. Several of the opinions at all events, if not new, are for the present as little likely to meet with general acceptance as if they were. Chapter 1
To what extent Forms of Government are a Matter of Choice. A LL SPECULATIONS concerning forms of government bear the impress, more or less exclusive, of two conflicting theories respecting political institutions; or, to speak more properly, conflicting conceptions of what political institutions are. The failure of any of these conditions renders a form of government, whatever favourable promise it may otherwise hold out, unsuitable to the particular case.

The Subjection of Women
by John Stuart Mill
CHAPTER 1 The preceding considerations are amply sufficient to show that custom, however universal it may be, affords in this case no presumption, and ought not to create any prejudice, in favour of the arrangements which place women in social and political subjection to men. But I may go farther, and maintain that the course of history, and the tendencies of progressive human society, afford not only no presumption in favour of this system of inequality of rights, but a strong one against it; and that, so far as the whole course of human improvement up to the time, the whole stream of modern tendencies, warrants any inference on the subject, it is, that this relic of the past is discordant with the future, and must necessarily disappear.
NOTES:
. Title-page of Mme de Stael's Delphine.
CHAPTER 2
But how, it will be asked, can any society exist without government? In a family, as in a state, some one person must be the ultimate ruler. Who shall decide when married people differ in opinion? Both cannot have their way, yet a decision one way or the other must be come to. There are, no doubt, women, as there are men, whom equality of consideration will not satisfy; with whom there is no peace while any will or wish is regarded but their own. Such persons are a proper subject for the law of divorce. They are only fit to live alone, and no human beings ought to be compelled to associate their lives with them. But the legal subordination tends to make such characters among women more, rather than less, frequent. If the man exerts his whole power, the woman is of course crushed: but if she is treated with indulgence, and permitted to assume power, there is no rule to set limits to her encroachments. The law, not determining her rights, but theoretically allowing her none at all, practically declares that the measure of what she has a right to, is what she can contrive to get.

A System of Logic
Source : Introduction from the Longman's 1884 edition of the System of Logic
INTRODUCTION
. THERE is as great diversity among authors in the modes which they have adopted of defining logic, as in their treatment of the details of it. This is what might naturally be expected on any subject on which writers have availed themselves of the same language as a means of delivering different ideas. Ethics and jurisprudence are liable to the remark in common with logic. Almost every writer having taken a different view of some of the particulars which these branches of knowledge are usually understood to include, each has so framed his definition as to indicate beforehand his own peculiar tenets, and sometimes to beg the question in their favour. done , it is often requisite to know the nature and properties of many things. admitted and in this sense induction is as much entitled to be called reasoning as the demonstrations of geometry. Writers on logic have generally preferred the former acceptation of the term: the latter, and more extensive signification is that in which I mean to use it. I do this by virtue of the right I claim for every author, to give whatever provisional definition he pleases of his own subject. But sufficient reasons will, I believe, unfold themselves as we advance, why this should be not only the provisional but the final definition. It involves, at all events, no arbitrary change in the meaning of the word; for, with the general usage of the English language, the wider signification, I believe, accords better than the more restricted one.

Name:
John Stuart Mill Dates:
Born: May 20, 1806 in London, England
Died: May 8, 1873 in Avignon Biography:
John Stuart Mill was an English philosopher who is remembered for having developed the modern ethical theory of utilitarianism, based upon the earlier work of Jeremy Bentham. According to Mill, actions could be best judged as moral or immoral based upon how well they fostered the greatest possible happiness for the greatest number of people. Mill was unusual in the sense that his parents did not raise him in a religious environment or to believe religious doctrines. Thus, he was never a believing Christian and could approach its claims without the baggage of disappointment and anger that often accompany those who believed at one time and later rejected it. In his 1887 book A System of Logic , Mill made an important but often unrecognized contribution to the development of modern sicence. It was not until after the publication of this work that scientists came to realize the importance of control groups in scientific experiments. Even today it is difficult to get people to understand the necessity of testing the presence of a cause against the absence of a cause - in the 19th century, that realization was even more uncommon.

died May 8, 1873, Avignon, France English philosopher, economist, and exponent of Utilitarianism . He was prominent as a publicist in the reforming age of the 19th century, and remains of lasting interest as a logician and an ethical theorist. Early life and career The eldest son of the British historian, economist, and philosopher James Mill , he was born in his father's house in Pentonville, London. He was educated exclusively by his father, who was a strict disciplinarian. By his eighth year he had read in the original Greek Aesop's Fables Xenophon 's Anabasis , and the whole of the historian Herodotus . He was acquainted with the satirist Lucian, the historian of philosophy , the Athenian writer and educational theorist Isocrates , and six dialogues of Plato . He had also read a great deal of history in English. At the age of eight he started Latin, the geometry of Euclid, and algebra and began to teach the younger children of the family. His main reading was still history, but he went through all the Latin and Greek authors commonly read in the schools and universities and, by the age of 10 could read Plato and the Athenian statesman Demosthenes with ease. About the age of 12, he began a thorough study of Scholastic logic, at the same time reading

John Stuart Mill He is best known as a utilitarian moral philosopher; but his book on logic (1843) contains views on induction, scientific or causal explanation, and the methodology of social sciences. Although he had no experience in natural science, he reorganized materials drawn from empiricist philosophy and scientists such as John Herschel, and made up a rather influential view. His disputes with Whewell are also interesting, touching upon many issues of scientific methodology.
