De l'Esprit ', is one continued and most acute commentary on it; and, together with the other great idea of Helvetius, the influence of circumstances on character, it will make his name live by the side of Rousseau, when most of the other French metaphysicians of the eighteenth century will be extant as such only in literary history. John Stuart Mill (1806-73)
The eldest son of economist James Mill, John Stuart Mill was educated according to the rigorous expectations of his Benthamite father. He was taught Greek at age three and Latin at age eight. By the time he reached young adulthood, John Stuart Mill was a formidable intellectual, albeit an emotionally depressed one. After recovering from a nervous breakdown, he departed from his Benthamite teachings to shape his own view of political economy. He wrote Principles of Political Economy, which became the leading economics textbook for forty years after it was written. In it Mill elaborated on the ideas of David Ricardo and Adam Smith. He helped develop the ideas of economies of scale, opportunity cost, and comparative advantage in trade. Mill was a strong believer in freedom, especially of speech and of thought. He defended freedom on two grounds. First, he argued, society's utility would be maximized if each person was free to make his or her own choices. (The "her" is particularly appropriate. Mill strongly believed, possibly due to the influence of his wife, Harriet Taylor, whom he idolized, that women were the equals of men. His book The Subjection of Women attacked the contemporary view of women's inherent inferiority.) Second, Mill believed that freedom was required for each person's development as a whole person. In his famous essay

he appearance of a treatise like the present, on a subject on which so many works of merit already exist, may be thought to require some explanation. P.1 It might, perhaps, be sufficient to say, that no existing treatise on Political Economy contains the latest improvements which have been made in the theory of the subject. Many new ideas, and new applications of ideas, have been elicited by the discussions of the last few years, especially those on Currency, on Foreign Trade, and on the important topics connected more or less intimately with Colonization: and there seems reason that the field of Political Economy should be re-surveyed in its whole extent, if only for the purpose of incorporating the results of these speculations, and bringing them into harmony with the principles previously laid down by the best thinkers on the subject. The son of James Mill , a friend and follower of Jeremy Bentham , John Stuart Mill was subjected to a rigorous education at home: he mastered English and the classical languages as a child, studied logic and philosophy extensively, read the law with John Austin , and then embarked on a thirty-five career with the British East India Company at the age of seventeen. (He also suffered through a severe bout of depression before turning twenty-one.) Despite such a rich background, Mill credited the bulk of his intellectual and personal development to his long and intimate association with Harriet Hardy Taylor . They were devoted friends for two decades before the death of her husband made it possible for them to marry in 1852; she died in Avignon six years later. Mill continued to write and to participate in political affairs, serving one term in Parliament (1865-68). The best source of information about Mill's life is his own Autobiography Philosophically, Mill was a radical

Biography of John Stuart Mill
John Stuart Mill was born on May 20, 1806 in north London, the oldest of nine children. His father, James Mill, was a student of Jeremy Bentham, a radical utilitarian. John himself was accelerated through school and shared the company of many of his father's intellectual friends throughout his adolescence. In fact, young John was sent to France to live with Samuel Bentham, the brother of Jeremy. It is often lamented that John lacked a childhood thanks to his father's intense drive of his son into the academic world. Indeed, soon after his education, John followed his father into a job at the East India Company where he remained in leadership positions until the company's demise in 1858. Mill's early writings and contributions to philosophy were published in two newspapers, The Traveller and The Morning Chronicle, both edited by associates of his friends. The radical philosophical journal Westminster Review served as another pulpit for Mill and a means to further elaborate on his views. Mill's Autobiography, completed shortly before his death in 1873, recounted the experiences that he had with the London Debating Society where his view were seen as being the product of an obsessive academic upbringing, with but more plain memorization than true philosophical thought. The experience he gained as a member of the society taught him the value of political philosophy not as a mode to create the ideal political system, but a means of determining the principles necessary to establish any successful governing system.

Among the several texts that John Stuart Mill and Harriet Taylor Mill were working on during the years of their marriage in the 1850's were such familar ethical and political writings as Utilitarianism and On Liberty . Whatever might be the case about the nature and extent of Harriet's contribution to these works, they are of a piece, in my judgment, and I think it illuminating to follow the themes of the Mills' libertarian utilitarianism thru' most of the works that date from this period or just after, whence this hypertext, which includes not only the two texts just mentioned but also two of the three Essays on Religion -viz., the essays on Nature and the Utility of Religion , and as well The Subjection of Women , and Considerations on Representative Government Autobiography Autobiography and in the preface to Representative Governement remarks upon that continuity in so many words.
