22. Thomas Middleton (c.1580-1627)
Biographical article.

Thomas Middleton Thomas Middleton was christened son of William Middleton and Anne Snow at St. Lawrence in the Old Jewry on April 18, 1580. As a lad in his teens he published The Wisdom of Solomon Paraphrased (1597) and Micro-Cynicon, Six Snarling Satires (1599), but meanwhile, in April, 1598, had matriculated at Queen's College, Oxford. There is no record of his connection with the theater until May 22, 1602, when Henslowe records in his Diary a payment made to him together with Munday, Drayton, and Webster "in earnest of a book called Caesar's Fall ." From this time almost to his death numerous references to his dramatic activity show that he sometimes wrote alone but more often with other well-known dramatists, notably Dekker and Rowley. Two satirical tales, The Black Book and Father Hubbard's Tale , published in 1604, reveal his early interest in the seamy side of London life, which he was to turn to good account in his comedies of manners written between 1604 and 1611. Among these may be mentioned A Trick to Catch the Old One A Mad World, My Masters

PREFACE Too soon and too late is this work is published : too soon, in that it was in the press before I had notice of it, by which means some faults may escape in the printing; too late, for that it was not published when the general voice of the people had sealed it for good, and the newness of it made it much more desired than at this time. For plays in this city are like wenches new-fallen to the trade: only desired of your neatest gallants whiles they're fresh; when they grow stale they must be rented by termers and country chapmen . I know not how this labour will please: sure I am it passed the censure of the stage with a general applause; now whether

Middleton, Thomas
Thomas Middleton, engraving (b. April? 1580, London, Eng.d. July 4, 1627, Newington Butts, Surrey), late-Elizabethan dramatist who drew people as he saw them, with comic gusto or searching irony. By 1600 Middleton had spent two years at Oxford and had published three books of verse. He learned to write plays by collaborating with Thomas Dekker, John Webster, and others for the producer Philip Henslowe. A popular playwright, he was often commissioned to write and produce lord mayor's pageants and other civic entertainments, and in 1620 he was appointed city chronologer. His chief stage success was A Game at Chaess (1625), in which the Black King and his men, representing Spain and the Jesuits, are checkmated by the White Knight, Prince Charles. This political satire drew crowds to the Globe until the Spanish ambassador protested and James I suppressed the play. Middleton's masterpieces are two tragedies, Women Beware Women (1621?, published 1657) and The Changeling (1622, with William Rowley; published 1653). His comedies picture a society dazzled by money in which most people grasp for all they can get, by any means. Michaelmas Terme (1605?, published 1607) is one of the richest in irony. In

    38. THOMAS MIDDLETON
middleton, thomas (c. 15701627), English dramatist, son of William middleton, was born about 1570, probably in London. thomas middleton.
    http://53.1911encyclopedia.org/M/MI/MIDDLETON_THOMAS.htm
    THOMAS MIDDLETON
MIDDLETON, THOMAS The most notable event in his career was the production at the Globe theatre in 1624 of a political play, A Game at Chess, satirizing the policy of the court, which had just received a rebuff in the matter of the Spanish marriage, the English and Spanish personages concerned being disguised as the White Knight, the Black King, and so forth. The play was stopped, in consequence of remonstrances from the Spanish ambassador, but not until after nine days performances, and the dramatist and the actors were summoned to answer for it. It is doubtful whether Middleton was actually imprisoned, and in any case the kings anger was soon satisfied and the matter allowed to drop, on the plea that the piece had been seen and passed by the master of the revels, Sir Henry Herbert. Middleton died at his house at Newington Butts, and was buried on the 4th of July 1627. That note of incredulous amazement that the man whom she has just instigated to the commission of murder can be so wicked as to have served her end for any end of his own beyond the pay of a professional assassin, is a touch worthy of the greatest dramatist that ever lived. . . . That she, the first criminal, should be honestly shocked as well as physically horrified by revelation of the real motive which impelled her accomplice into crime, gives a lurid streak of tragic humour to the lifelike interest of the scene; as the pure infusion of spontaneous poetry throughout redeems the whole work from the charge of vulgar subservience to a vulgar taste for the presentation or the contemplation of criminal horror.
