James Michener AN EPIC LIFE By Kira Albin, interview conducted in 1997
Photograph by Susan Dillon. © 1996 Susan Dillon Editor's Note: The interview for this article took place with Mr. Michener on August 28 , 1997. Mr. Michener passed away on October 16, 1997. James Michener, one of America's best-loved novelists, has lived a life of epic proportions, his saga as much a page-turner as any of his famous books, his success the outcome of hard-won battles.
Michener, an orphan, was adopted shortly after birth by Mabel Michener, a poverty-stricken widow with two other children. The family lived in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, surviving with few resources and often little to eat. Michener's classmates and even a teacher tormented him about his unpressed secondhand clothes and toeless sneakers with broken, knotted laces.
According to John Hayes, author of James A. Michener: A Biography (The Bobbs-Merrill Company, Inc., 1984), Mabel was Michener's birth mother, but being unwed, she used the adoption story to protect them both. Michener holds to the adoption version but no longer discusses the subject. Despite these circumstances, his participation in basketball led to numerous team victories and a championship season, bringing him a certain acceptance and some lessening of the pain of the ridicule to which he was subjected.
As a young teenager and with just a few dollars in his pocket, Michener began hitchhiking across the United States, sometimes with a buddy, frequently alone. Of those days, Michener writes in his autobiography, The World Is My Home (Random House, 1992), "Those were years of wonder and enchantment,...some of the best years I would know. I kept meeting American citizens of all levels who took me into their cars, their confidence and often their homes." From these early experiences grew Michener's lifelong insatiable curiosity about people, cultures, and faraway lands.

The James A. Michener Society was formed in the fall of 1998 and is composed of people who share a common interest in James Michener's life and work. The following words, excerpted from a letter by John Kings, James Michener's long-time friend and literary assistant, describe the purpose of the James A. Michener Society. The Purpose of the Society is to:
    • preserve the intellectual legacy of James A. Michener as a writer, teacher, historian, public servant, patriot and philanthropist, ensure that future generations have full access to all his writings, promote the exchange of ideas and information about his writings, encourage fellowship among readers of his writings, inform devotees and members of the Society about recent publications and critiques of his writings.
The Society will accomplish this through a number of activities. A newsletter will be published periodically. An annual meeting of members will be held. Society activities will provide the occasion for sharing of memories and anecdotes that will illuminate the Michener books and other writings in a special way. Eventually, the Society expects to sponsor seminars, lectures and other events that will provide opportunities for fellowship among members and a forum for the discussion of James Michener's writings and the many facets of his life.

Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback James A(lbert) Michener (1907-1997) American novelist, essayist, and travel book writer, best known for his massive and detailed novels ( Hawaii Centennial Texas , etc) many of which were created in his workshop with assistants and researchers. Michener wrote his first book at the age of thirty-nine and immediately won a Pulitzer Prize. "I am a humanist because I think humanity can, with constant moral guidance, create reasonably decent societies. I think that young people who want to understand the world can profit from the works of Plato and Socrates, the behaviour of the three Thomases, Aquinas, More and Jefferson - the austere analyses of Immanuel Kant and the political leadership of Abraham Lincoln and Franklin Roosevelt." (from The World is My Home According to his own words James A. Michener was a foundling without knowledge of his birth-place or date; according to other sources he was born in New York and taken as an orphan to Doylestown, Pennsylvania. He was raised by Mabel Michener, a Quaker widow. He started to write a sports column at the age of fifteen for the local newspaper and edited the high school student paper. From 1929 to 1931 Michener was a master at the Hill School in Pottstown and from 1934 to 1936 at the George School in Newton. He was a professor at the University of Northern Colorado (1936-40), and then visiting professor of history at Harvard's School of. Education (1940-41). When the United States entered World War II Michener decided to enlist in the Navy although as a Quaker he was exempt from actual military service. From 1944 to 1946 he served as a naval historian in the South Pacific and traveled widely in the area. His early fiction is also based on his experiences in the Pacific. Between the years 1941 and 1949 Michener was associate editor at the Macmillan Company, New York. Since 1949 he devoted himself entirely to writing.

    Writers and Writing
Although most of us know Vincent van Gogh in Arles and Paul Gauguin in Tahiti as if they were neighbors somewhat disreputable but endlessly fascinating none of us can name two French generals or department store owners of that period. I take enormous pride in considering myself an artist, one of the necessaries. I am always interested in why young people become writers, and from talking with many I have concluded that most do not want to be writers working eight and ten hours a day and accomplishing little; they want to have been writers, garnering the rewards of having completed a best-seller. They aspire to the rewards of writing but not to the travail. I was brought up in the great tradition of the late nineteenth century: that a writer never complains, never explains and never disdains. James A. Michener
      Pulitzer Prize-Winning Novelist INTERVIEW
      January 10, 1991
      St. Petersburg, Florida
Your novels, your big novels, go back pretty far to understand history and to understand people's lives. How far back do you have to go to understand James Michener? That's a very complex question because I don't know who my parents were. I know nothing about my inheritance. I could be Jewish; I could be part Negro; I could be Irish; I could be Russian. I am spiritually a mix anyway, but I did have a solid childhood fortunately, because of some wonderful women who brought me up.
I never had a father or a man in the house, and that was a loss, but you live with that loss. video audio So, you don't have to go back very far. You can pick me up around 1912, when I was five years old. Your early life reads like a novel. Tell me about your childhood. I lived in extreme poverty. We moved often in the dead of night, and on a few minutes notice. Some people recently have told me something I never realized. My mother, who took in stray children and had eight or nine of them around sometimes, was employed by a real estate man who would move her into a house to sort of clean it up and renovate it and make it salable. Then we would move on. That might be true because that's the way it worked. I grew up in a small town. I think we lived in nine different houses all over the town. But I remember each one most vividly, and I rather liked each one of them, except the one we moved into that was infested with a terrible attack of bedbugs and other vermin. We stayed there only one night.
