In 1997 the synaesthesia press published Bad, mad and dying a limited edition chap book featuring three writers: Alan Catlin, Errol Miller, and Jack Micheline. There were three different editions: 26 copies were lettered and had a cover with an original painting by Micheline; 1 - 50 numbered copies were signed by all three contributors on the page in which their story appears; numbers 51-150 were numbered. Needless to say, the lettered copies, with Jack's artwork, were sold out almost immediately. We have a few signed copies left, as well as a few that are numbered. BUY THEM HERE. X-Ray. Errol Miller is a short story writer from Louisiana. His stories have appeared in hundreds of little magazines. His contribution is called "The Pool Hall Affair." What can be said of Jack Micheline? He was an original Beat, there from Day One; Jack Kerouac penned the intro to Micheline's classic first book of poems River of Red Wine, Charles Bukowski loved him, and Allan Ginsberg couldn't ignore him...Jack really helped on this title. Here's how: We were waiting for the #16 to take us out of the Mission when it all began:
ME: I got a couple good stories to publish.

A. D. Winans Remembers JACK MICHELINE J ack Micheline , a poet of the Beat generation, died from a heart attack, on Friday, February 27, 1998, aboard a Bart commuter train. His body was discovered by the transit police near the Orinda Bart station, which ominously was the end of the line. Micheline was a "street" poet who lived out his life on the fringe of poverty, first in the Bronx neighborhoods of New York, where he was born, and later in San Francisco. He saw the Beat generation as a media created fancy, having little if anything to do with the creative spirit. Hanging out in Greenwich Village, in the early 50s, he met Langston Hughes, the legendary Harlem poet. When Hughes was asked why he remained in Harlem, he replied that he preferred the company of wild men to wild animals. Micheline adopted this motto as his own. Langston Hughes was but one of many talented poets, writers, and musicians whom Micheline associated with in the 50s while living in New York. In 1957, Nat Hentoff, Jean Shepard, and Charles Mingus awarded Micheline the Revolt in Literature Award, at the Half Note Club, in New York City, which resulted in a long friendship between Micheline and Mingus. It was during the same time that Micheline's first book of poetry, River of Red Wine , was published, with an introduction by Jack Kerouac. The book was later reviewed by Dorothy Parker in Esquire Magazine.

Jack Micheline Place
On Saturday, November 18, 2003, Pardee Alley located on upper Grant Avenue, in North Beach, San Francisco, was renamed Jack Micheline Place.
The proposal to rename Pardee Alley in honor of the late poet Jack Micheline was first submitted to the Board of Supervisors in 1999 by A.D. Winans and became a reality with the help of the new Board of Supervisors President Matt Gonzalez and North Beach supervisor Peskin. The brief street dedication included short comments from Jack's son (Vince Silvaer), Supervisor Peskin, and A. D. Winans, followed by Supervisor Gonzalez reading two poems written by Micheline and a poem for Micheline by Jack Hirschman.
Gonzalez edited and published Micheline's last book, a collection of his poetry (67 Poems For Downtrodden Saints) and Winans previously published a book of poems and a collection of Micheline's short stories (Skinny Dynamite) under the Second Coming Imprint. Winans was a friend of
Micheline for over thirty years, and it's a little known fact that
Gonzalez is himself a poet who often provided Micheline with a place to sleep at Gonzalez' former flat in the Mission
District.

A Tribute To Beat Poet Jack Micheline
Here are some poems by the late Beat poet Jack Micheline, who passed away in 1998. Jack was a real poet of the streets and one of the better Beat writers. I am happy to post them and grateful to his son Vince Silvaer, who runs the Jack Micheline Foundation and the official Jack Micheline Foundation Website at http://www.jackmicheline.com Check it out for an excellent biography, bibliography, examples of his poems and artwork, photos, and mission statement from the foundation. Also thanks to Dave Christy for lending me the poems for posting.
Poem To The Freaks
Jack Micheline

To live as I have done is surely absurd
In cheap hotels and furnished rooms
To walk up side streets and down back alleys
Talking to oneself
And screaming to the sky obscenities
That the arts is a rotten business indeed
That mediocrity and the rage of fashion rules My poems and paintings piled on the floor To be one with himself A Saint A Prince To persevere Through storms and hardons Through dusk and dawns To kick death in the ass To be passed over like a bad penny A midget An Ant A roach A freak A Hot Piece An Outlaw Raise your cup and drink my friend Drink for those who walk alone in the night To the crippled and the blind To the lost and the damned To the lone bird flying in the sky Drink to wonder Drink to me Drink to pussy and dreams Drink to madness and all the stars I hear the birds singing God Bless The Unknown Jack Micheline

TRIBUTE TO JACK MICHELINE - THE LAST OF THE STREET POETS
A. D. WINANS
On Friday, February 27, 1998, I learned of Jack Micheline's death. He was found dead on a Bart train, apparently the victim of a heart attack. Micheline was described on Cafe Blue, The Internet, as "One of the lesser Beats," but was the author of twenty books of poems. He was 68 years old at the time of his death, and was suffering from diabetes. He was born in New York, under the name Harvey Martin Silvaer, and worked as a union organiser before dedicating his life to poetry and painting. While in New York, he frequented the bars and coffee houses of Greenwich Village, walking the streets with the likes of Jack Kerouac, who wrote an introduction for Micheline's first book of poems, "River of Red Wine," which was favourably reviewed by Dorothy Parker in Esquire Magazine Micheline was the last of the authentic "street" poets, uneasy in a poetry world turned business. He never sought fame, choosing to write about the people he cared for: hookers, drug addicts, blue collar workers, and the dispossessed, and he did it with and from the heart. Micheline told me, "I don't want to be published because I wear the same clothes that others wear, or because I have the same ideas. I want respect for my own individuality, but it doesn't work that way."

Spring 2001 REMEMBERING JACK MICHELINE Ray Freed I met the poet Jack Micheline in 1970 in New York City at Dr Generosity's, a saloon at 73rd and Second on the East Side. I waited tables there and helped run a Sunday afternoon reading series and was editor and publisher of the Dr`Generosity Press, which from 1969 through 1972 put out a number of books and broadsides of poetry.
Of all the poets who came through the Doctor's doors, and the list is long and impressive, Jack was the only one who was a full time poet. I mean that's all Jack did, be a poet. He had no regular job, didn't teach, and at the time was sleeping on the subway. For drink and food Jack would take a poem or two in typescript, make copies, staple the pages inside a brown folder, and on the cover write the poem's title with a marker. On the inside there was a cover page with the title and Jack's signature and the edition number, like This Is Copy 3 Of A Limited Edition Of 10 Copies, again`written by Jack with a marker. These productions he peddled for a few dollars each in saloons and on the street. Jack called them Midnight Special Editions.

J ack came into the bookstore often. He'd sort through the sale books out front and then he always headed for the back to use the bathroom. I just had to hope he'd hit the toilet and not splash all over. What a cantankerous grumpy man Jack was. Jack Micheline, Beat poet, 68 years old. He couldn't let a day go by without ranting about how Lawrence Ferlinghetti had fucked him over and publishers were too timid to touch an outlaw like him. He wasn't an outlaw. But he was also a loudmouth (a gifted one) who tried to sell me lousy books or sell back the books I gave him with his penciled in imaginary prices. Then when I wouldn't buy them he'd shout at me, " What's the matter with these man! Didn't you say your store is going to fold if you don't have more people bringing in books to sell? What's the matter with these! These are good! I'd say to him, "

Eddie Woods Jack Micheline in Amsterdam
Eddie and Jack met again in the Netherlands 10 years later, when they performed together at the 1992 North Sea Jazz Festival. Although the two maintained a lively correspondence until shortly before Jack's death in February 1998, this interview got misplaced in the shuffle of vicissitudes and only recently resurfaced.
JM:
EW:
Here's to that good life. [Eddie raises a cognac snifter]
JM:
Well, whatever it is, whatever that meshuggeneh life is.
EW:
And how exactly did that come about, arriving at this enviable point?
JM: Let me explain something. I never had a desire to be a poet. I came from a very poor, tough section of the Bronx, and poets were sissies. Who knows what a poet is? But when you come from the very bottom and you're self-educated or streetwise, the word for a poet is, he's a fruit or a sissy, whatever, a guy carrying a plow, with a long coat on. Who knows what a sissy is? Hey, it's okay, Snuffie! [Eddie's canine companion, about whom Jack later wrote, in a letter to Eddie: "Snuffie is not a dog!"]
EW:
Keep talking, Jack, I'll get his bone.
