Web Pages: Who Needs 'Em?
Nobody really knows whether self-promotion helps sell books. There are success stories, and there are the other kind. There's no clear evidence, either way. However, if you've decided to do any self-promotion, a Web page is one of the easiest methods for most writers: you can "meet" hundreds, even thousands of potential readers without ever leaving your desk. "I think it makes a lot of sense for an author to have a web page," says Jennifer Cast, an employee of the online bookstore Amazon Books . "It certainly can be a strong piece in the mix of promotional tools. S/he should market the site during readings, signings, interviews, etc."

As with most such series, however, the later books do tend to go downhill. People who like that sort of thing will find this the sort of thing they like. Melisa C. Michaels Melisa C. Michaels wrote a series called "Skyrider". Another writer that her publisher informed that she wasn't selling enough books in the series to warrant trying to write more in the series. She continued to write but not in the series that I love so much. After a long search throughout the Internet, I finally located her homepage as well as a hang-out of hers. After a few pieces of Email between us I found she is currently looking for a publisher that will re-publish the series and would like to add more books to it. I sure hope that she does. I learned that she didn't have a "fan" club, also. But now she does! Great News for those who has a Palm Pilot or similiar device, Peanut Press contracted Melisa to format the entire series for their electronic format as well as her book, Far Harbor. Maybe one day, she will be able to locate a publisher to get this series republished in the paper format.
Here is a couple places where Melisa hangs out when she has free time!

    Play/Screen Writing
Freelance Writing Specialty Writing Interview With Melisa Michaels
    Interview by Jenna Glatzer
When and why did you decide you were a writer?

That's an interesting way to phrase it. Usually I'm asked when I decided to be a writer. They're quite different questions, though in my case the
answer is the same: I never decided. I always knew. I started nagging my mother to teach me to read and write when I was about five, because school hadn't started teaching that, and I wanted to get started. I can't say why. Perhaps because I had been entranced by the stories Mum read to me and my sisters when we were small. Or perhaps it's a genetic flaw some people are
    born with....
What have been your biggest challenges?
Gosh, that's a tough one. You may mean "biggest challenge to write," but probably the biggest challenge I've faced to date was finding a new agent and making other moves toward recovery after my career crashed in the eighties. The sales figures on my first seven books were inadequate for the publishers involved to want to keep me on, and my agent and I found we didn't get along well in adversity. Unfortunately, finding a new one wasn't as easy as I expected. Nor was getting back in print. It took ten years and some really generous help from friends, as well as determination and plain good luck, to get me going again.
What do you do when faced with writer's block? How do you get re-inspired?

Book cover art by Bruce Jensen. AUTHOR'S SITE MELISA C. MICHAELS Skirmish, I'm sorry to say, is a cruddy little waste of time, a book whose gritty and "rebellious" space opera aspirations are cut off at the knees by some of the least appealing characters and follow-the-dots plotting I've read in recent memory. As they say in Hollywood, it's a big So What. I think most of us would agree that a requirement of good, junk-food level escapism is that it ought to be, at the very least, fun. Second Star but hello, here they are. Oh, yes, I forgot to mention; the Belters (those who work in the asteroid belts, whom, we are informed, have developed a gene for freefall) have their very own slang, the most commonly repeated phrase of which is "Whatsamattayou?" Michaels explains that the pilots' juvenile strutting is simply their mechanism for dealing with the fear of sudden horrible death that we're told is part-and-parcel of living in the asteroid belt; okay, but they're still assholes. But if the concentrated bad-Marvel-comic level characterizations and dialogue weren't off-putting enough, Michaels then steers us into a dull and generic sabotage plot that barely generates enough sense-of-wonder to power a four-watt nightlight. Suffice it to say that this brief but still tedious novel offered precious little of merit to compel me through to its finale; I've rarely felt so indifferent towards a story. Should I be surprised that it spawned not one but

Book cover art by Bruce Jensen. AUTHOR'S SITE MELISA C. MICHAELS Expecting a book to suck is not, I suppose, the fairest or most open-minded approach to bring to reading. But it does mean that you're never disappointed, and it often means you get to be pleasantly surprised. Case in point: First Battle , the second of five novels about "Skyrider" Melacha Rendell. The first book in this series was the worst sort of space opera dreck, featuring amateurish writing, a loathsome protagonist and a tepid, frequently illogical plot. This sequel isn't going to earn Melisa Michaels a seat at the table with C. J. Cherryh or David Weber, but it shows marked improvement. First Battle is silly but fun, and fun was a quality conspicuously absent from
