January 10 ~  First the Touch Foot Reflexology: Visual Guide
"We a r e what we are, the spirit afterwards, but fi rs t the t o u c h. ~ Charlotte Mew How about unleashing your personal power with a foot massage? Besides an amazing 250,000 sweat glands, our fabulous foot is made up of 26 bones, 33 joints, 107 ligaments, and 19 muscles. "The feet are a perfect microcosm or mini map of the whole body," explained massage expert Laura Norman. "Even the inside curve of the foot corresponds to the natural curves in the spine." The treatment of foot massage in healing is an ancient science. Hieroglyphics and paintings suggest that the therapy was performed in ancient Egypt, China, and India The ancient art of Reflexology is based on the belief that the body has points related to other parts of the body. By pressing on these reflex points, called meridians, the body's own natural healing powers can be triggered. As ancient Greek physician Hippocrates once said, "Natural forces within us are the healers of disease." The meridians channel qi or chi (life energy) and blood throughout the body . For example, massaging the heels helps the lower back. Stimulating the big toes benefits the head and the little toe controls the sinuses. The ankle corresponds to the pelvis and reproductive organs.

'Twas only last June month I mind that we Was thinkin' the toss and call in the breast of the lover So everlastin' as the sea. Here's the same little fishies that sputter and swim, Wi' the moon's old glim on the grey, wet sand: An' him no more to me or me to him Then the wind goin' over my hand. Charlotte Mew I first heard the poem when it was read by a visiting lecturer at our high school about 1947. It kept ringing in my head, but I could never find it or quote it completely. All I could recall was that it was written by a woman poet with a name that began with "M". For years I tried all of the usual suspects, but never found it. Then I tried www.Dogpile.com.... and found http://www.execpc.com/~jon/sealove.html but without an author. This year's a different thing, I'll not think of you. But I'll like Spring because it is simply Spring As the thrushes do. Charlotte Mew One of the things I enjoy about love poetry is the thousand subtle variations played upon every theme, the appeal to universal emotions and experiences that manage to be at once common to every poem and different in each one of them. Today's poem is, indeed, combined out of several common themes and elements. Where its beauty lies is in the delicate arrangement of those elements, the simple but precise combination of images and the way they blend into a complete poem. Even the rather faltering metre and phrasing are a deliberate and carefully crafted effect, echoing the narrator's 'simple' outlook - as Shine Kannikkatt put it in his comment to Poem #1084 , there is a 'vulnerability' evident in this and others like Teasdale's works [...] poems which remind us of the preciousness of life / small things which does have big impacts and 'longing' etc. that definitely adds to the poem's appeal. martin Links: Biography:

Charlotte Mew Study Questions The Trees Are Down"
  • What are features of the poem's rhythms? Do they shift? Are they appropriate for its topic? What is the poem's subject? Why do you think the poet inserts the initial quotation from the book of Revelations? Why is the cutting of the plane trees significant? How does the speaker's memory of a dead rat express her mood? Does the visual arrangement of lines in stanza three reflect its content? What is the sequence of the poem's thought? What are important images from the final stanza? Can this poem be read as a poem on ecology? If so, what is its message?
  • "Domus Caedet Arborem"
  • What does the title mean? Why do you think the poet expresses her thought in Latin? Do the poem's rhythms reflect its subject matter? What effect is created by the shortened last line? Do you think the poem's simplicity adds or detracts from its effectiveness?
  • "The Farmer's Bride"
  • What problem is described in the poem? What is the effect of telling the story from the husband's point of view?

and huckster s face As they drive their bargains, is the Face Of Godand some young, piteous, murdered face. Charlottel mew, 1919,
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/remembrance/poetry/cenotaph.shtml
Not yet will those measureless fields be green again
    Where only yesterday the wild sweet blood of wonderful youth was shed;
There is a grave whose earth must hold too long, too deep a stain,
Though for ever over it we may speak as proudly as we may tread.
But here, where the watchers by lonely hearths from the thrust of an
inward sword have more slowly bled,
We shall build the Cenotaph: Victory, winged, with Peace, winged too, at the column's head.
And over the stairway, at the foot oh! here, leave desolate, passionate hands to spread
Violets, roses, and laurel, with the small, sweet, tinkling country things
Speaking so wistfully of other Springs,
From the little gardens of little places where son or sweetheart was born and bred. In splendid sleep, with a thousand brothers To lovers - to mothers Here, too, lies he: Under the purple, the green, the red, It is all young life: it must break some women's hearts to see Such a brave, gay coverlet to such a bed! Only, when all is done and said, God is not mocked and neither are the dead For this will stand in our Market-place - Who'll sell, who'll buy?

    The Death of a Poet
    Penelope Fitzgerald
Penelope Fitzgerald wrote 'The Death of a Poet' in 1980 or 1981, intending it to form part of a group portrait of the writers published by Harold Monro's Poetry Bookshop in Bloomsbury. In the event, however, she wrote a biography of Charlotte Mew, Charlotte Mew and Her Friends , which was published, and reviewed in the LRB in 1984 - and will be reissued this summer. In 1927 Charlotte Mew was 58 and living with her sister Anne, a decorative painter, at the Hogarth Studios near Tottenham Court Road. Alida was Harold Monro's wife, and a friend to both Mew sisters. Sydney Cockerell was the director of the Fitzwilliam Museum. Evelyn Millard had become a friend of Anne Mew's when they were students at the Female School of Art in Queen Square. (Now an actress, she played Cecily Cardew in the first performance of The Importance of Being Earnest .) Lucy Harrison had been Charlotte Mew's headmistress at the Gower Street School. By the summer of 1927 Anne Mew had wasted away. When her eyes fell shut they looked as though they were sealed into her face, and would never open again. Alida wrote to Harold Monro that 'they ought to put her to sleep.'
