James Merrill's Myth: An Interview
By Helen Vendler James Merrill
(James Merrill recently published Mirabell: Books of Number in which he continues his account, begun in "The Book of Ephraim" published in Divine Comedies , of conversations held, via the Ouija board, with dead friends and spirits in "another world." Merrill and his friend David Jackson receive the messages which are transcribed letter by letter; Merrill then edits and rewrites the transcriptions. The transcriptions are set in a frame of autobiographical narrative and personal reflection. The spirits and the dead speak in capital letters; the poet writes in lower case. The questions that it occurred to me to ask Merrill are those of a reader confronting a poem unquestionably beautiful, but also baffling.) Helen Vendler : When you called your last book Divine Comedies , did you mean by that allusion to Dante that you were planning a trilogy? James Merrill : Not consciously. I'd convinced myself that "The Book of Ephraim" told everything I had to say about the "other world." Because of its length and looniness I'd taken to calling

“Poets don’t write first of all in English or American so much as each in an idiom peculiar to himself.”
James Merrill reads "A Downward Look"

listen

That was the first principle of poet James Merrill. The mid-century Golden Boy of American poetry. While the wild-eyed, wild- haired beat poets and bards of pop song took Walt Whitman’s style to the edge of meaning to howl about the condition of American society, Merrill looked into his own world and with great lyrical precision forged that “idiom peculiar to himself.” Merrill was born into the Aristocracy of Money. His father co-founded Merrill Lynch. It was a world of beauty and refinement, with Merrill himself the most beautiful and refined thing in it.

It was also a gay world in which the closet door was just on the verge of being opened. What his eye fell on he wrote about, from emerald rings to Ouija boards. Golden boy, silver voice. Pictured above is that of Merrill W. Bancroft standing beside his excellent display of James Millen memorabilia at the 2001 Antique Wireless Association conference in Rochester, NY. It was a matter of only a few months after Millen's death that his estate was offered for auction. Much of Millen's property, including his original 1936 station had already been donated to the AWA before his death (see elsewhere on this website for details.) This display won "The Display Award " and finished first in the Vacuum Tube Transmitters and Receivers display category.
How did Merrill find all these Millen items? In his own words, "I live in Townsend, Ma.My most significant collecting experience and luckiest day was the day of the auction at Jim's estate at the end of Tarbox Lane, his private road in North Reading, Ma. Three factors contributed to this day for me. First there was a meet at the Rhode Island Wireless and Steam Museum that day and second, the temperature was a record 98 degrees. Third, John Nagle had an auto breakdown on the way up from Herndon, Va. and never made it. The end result was that there was nobody
Merrill's story is not uncommon and would be a dream come true for many collectors. At the AWA conference Merrill did mention that someday all this material will be donated to the AWA museum so that it can live on for future generations of radio collectors and Millen enthusiasts. It is a shame that some items may have found the end of existance, including those rare DFP receiver prototypes. But perhaps even those were saved and will resurface again someday.

In 1982, this book was brought out as a companion to THE CHANGING LIGHT AT SANDOVER, which is definitely what I recommend reading of Merrill if one reads nothing else. Going up to the book DIVINE COMEDIES 1976, this ample collection is far more manageable (and affordable) than the brand new 2001 COLLECTED POEMS. There is also a SELECTED POEMS which encompasses Merrill's poems through 1985. This doesn't mean a whole lot is added over this book, since Merrill was working on SANDOVER through mos...
