Date of Defense Availability unrestricted Abstract Bis(diphenylphosphino)amine (PNP) ligands, prepared from (S)-(-)-1-methylbenzyl amine, (-)-cis-myrtanylamine, (S)-(-)-1,1-napthyl(ethyl)amine (PNP1 1a, PNP2 1b, and PNP3 1c respectively) and their cobalt carbonyl complexes are reported. In the absence of alkynes the PNP ligands chelate to the cobalt rather than bridging the two cobalt centers. Although the PNP ligands are chiral the crystal structures are best solved in centrosymmetric space groups with disorder at the chiral carbon with the exception of (PNP3)Co2(CO)6, 2c, which is solved in a non-centrosymmetric space group. When the PNP ligand chelates to cobalt, as in 2, the compounds show activity for the catalytic Pauson-Khand reaction, whereas when the PNP ligand bridges, as in 3, the reaction precedes stiochiometrically. The use of these chiral ligands has not yet resulted in enantioselective catalytic Pauson-Khand cycloadditions. However, a small 15% e.e. was detected for the stiochiometric Pauson-Khand cycloaddition with 3c as the metal substrate.

Merrill, James Milford.
JAMES MILFORD MERRILL (18-17-1936) James Milford Merrill, one of the nine children of Isaac Dimmock Merrill, a lumberman, and his wife Augusta McKinney, was born in Muskegon, Michigan, October 15, 1847. When he was four years of age, his parents removed to Bridgetown, at that time a small lumber camp some fifteen miles farther up the Muskegon River, and there his father built a shingle and clapboard mill and had his home on a high bluff overlooking the river. Every spring the Indians came in great numbers to tap the sugar maples. They had their camp about five miles from the town, and James used to play with the Indian children. From them and from the lumbermen he gained his knowledge of woodcraft which was to stand him in good stead when in later years he began to write of pioneer days. James attended the school at Bridgetown, and between school hours worked in his father's store and spent his leisure in writing sketches for some of the New York story papers. He also attended the State Normal at Ypsilanti, Michigan, for one term in 1865. On June 13, 1874, he was married to Elizabeth Brown, and one child, Raymond (1877-1926), who later became a reporter on the Grand Rapids Herald and editor of the Soo Daily News and finally ran a store in Grant, Michigan, was born of this marriage.

James Merrill The Voice of the Poet
Bold Type 's Poetry Editor Ernest Hilbert writes on Merrill: "If his poems appear to be so symmetrically ornate as to be almost grotesque in an era that was dominated by shabby, self-indulgent, and often irresponsibly political poems, they may be saved by this same fact. Merrill once posed the question 'think what one has to do to get a mass audience. I'd rather have one perfect reader. Why dynamite the pond in order to catch that single silver carp?'" Hear Merrill read 'The Emerald' and read an essay on the James Merrill Voice of the Poet recordings.
