James Merrill's Life Ann T. Keene Merrill was sent to exclusive private schools in the city and then to preparatory school at Lawrenceville, in New Jersey, where he continued writing poetry as well as short stories. With the help of his father he privately published a small collection of verse. After graduating in 1943 he entered Amherst College but took a leave of absence the following year to serve in the U.S. Army until the end of World War II, in 1945. Despite this interruption, Merrill excelled in his studies, majoring in literature. Having written a thesis on Marcel Proust, who became a major inspiration for his work, he graduated summa cum laude with a Phi Beta Kappa key in 1947. During Merrill's years at Amherst his future career as a poet seemed all but assured. By the time of his graduation his verse had already appeared in Poetry and the Kenyon Review , and he had published his first book of poems, The Black Swan (1946). After college he moved back to New York to writethe enormous Merrill family fortune allowed him to pursue his interests without having to earn a livingbut after a while he found the atmosphere too intense and distracting for serious work. He traveled for several years in Europe and Asia, reflecting on his life and family and apparently coming to terms with his homosexuality. He eventually settled in the small coastal town of Stonington, Connecticut, with David Jackson, who would become his longtime companion. During the 1960s Merrill bought a house in Athens and subsequently another residence in Key West, Florida, and divided his time among the three homes.

Merrill: On Puns (1972) James Merrill objet trouvé aspect cheapens it further – why? A Freudian slip is taken seriously: it betrays its maker’s hidden wish. The pun (or the rhyme, for that matter) "merely" betrays the hidden wish of words. It betrays also a historical dilemma. If World War I snapped, as we hear tell, the threads of civilization except where it continued briefly to baste the memories of men like Valéry and Joyce, the next generation’s problem was to create works whose resonance lasted more than a season. A culture without Greek or Latin or Anglo-Saxon goes off the gold standard. How to draw upon the treasure? At once representing and parodying our vital wealth, the lightweight crackle of wordplay would retain no little transactional power in the right hands. But was it – had the gold itself been – moral? Didn’t all that smack of ill-gotten gains? Even today, how many poets choose the holy poverty of some secondhand diction, pure dull content in translation from a never-to-be-known original. "There is no wing like meaning," said Stevens. Two are needed to get off the ground. from James Merrill, "Object Lessons" (a review of two books by Franis Ponge in the

Last Words - James Merrill
My life, your light green eyes
Have lit on me with joy.
There's nothing I don't know
Or shall not know again,
Over and over again.
It's noon, it's dawn, it's night,
I am the dog that dies
In the deep street of Troy
Tomorrow, long ago
Part of me dims with pain, Becomes the stinging flies, The bent head of the boy. Part looks into your light And lives to tell you so.

Merrill, James (1926-1995) James Merrill's significance as a gay writer lies in his deliberate use of a personal relationship to fuel his poetry. Born on March 3, 1926, to Charles Merrill, the stockbroker-founder of Merrill/Lynch, and Helen Ingram, James Merrill enjoyed the blessings of wealth and the culture of leisure. His Prussian-English nanny, whose sister was decorated for playing duets with the Queen Mother of Belgium, taught him French and German. Sponsor Message.
His parents divorced when he was twelve, and his nanny was let go. When Merrill was a senior in high school, his father collected some of his poems and short stories in a volume and had it printed under the title Jim's Book . After graduating from the Lawrenceville School, Merrill matriculated at Amherst College but interrupted his studies to serve in the army in World War II. He graduated in 1947, and four years later, having published his book

MERRILL, JAMES CUSHING (1853-1902). James Cushing Merrill, military surgeon and naturalist, the son of James Cushing and Jane (Hammond) Merrill, was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on March 26, 1853. He received his early education at private schools in Cambridge and Boston and then went to Germany to begin his medical education. He returned later to the University of Pennsylvania, where he received his medical degree in 1874. In 1875 he was commissioned assistant surgeon in the United States Army and assigned to St. Louis Barracks, Missouri. His next assignment was Fort Brown, Texas, where from February 1876 to June 1878 he made observations and collections of the avifauna. His annotated list of 252 species was published as "Notes on the Ornithology of Southern Texas" in the Proceedings of the United States National Museum Although the bird life of the lower Rio Grande valley had been studied by Jean Louis Berlandier, Henry Eeles Dresser, qqv and the naturalists of the International Boundary Commission (later the International Boundary and Water Commissionqv), it was still incompletely known during the 1870s. Merrill's study and that of George Burritt Sennett, qv which was published the same year, served to expand the observations of earlier naturalists and to draw attention to the unique avifauna of this region of Texas. Twelve species and subspecies of birds were recorded by Merrill as being new to the fauna of the United States. Most of the nests and eggs that Merrill collected were deposited in the National Museum, and many of the birdskins were given to his friend William Brewster at the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Cambridge. In addition to birds, Merrill also collected other zoological specimens, particularly insects.

Merrill, James Merrill, James (James Ingram Merrill), , American poet, b. New York City. Born into wealth, he studied at Amherst College (grad. 1947) and was free to live as he pleased and to devote much of his time to poetry. One of the most admired poets of his generation, he is noted for the technical virtuosity, elegant formality, refined lyricism, and witty urbanity of verse that, while always reserved, became more autobiographical, intimate, and colloquial over the years. His early volumes include First Poems Water Street Nights and Days The Fire Screen (1969), and Braving the Elements The Changing Light at Sandover (1982). In it, Merrill (with his companion David Jackson) used a Ouija board to invoke the spirits (and the spirit) of his aesthetic forebears. Among later volumes are Late Settings The Inner Room (1988), and A Scattering of Salts (1995). His lyrics are gathered in the volume James Merrill: Collected Poems (2001). Merrill won every major literary award for poetry, including the Pulitzer and Bollingen prizes and two National Book Awards. He also wrote plays, e.g., The Immortal Husband (1955); novels, e.g.
