Judith Merril: Obituary
Judith Merril , noted science fiction author, anthologist, and international humanist, died of heart failure on Friday, September 12, 1997, at the cardiac unit of Toronto General Hospital. She was 74. Following a private family service, the family sat Shiva at Judith's downtown Toronto apartment on Sunday and Monday, September 14 and 15. A memorial service for family and friends was held Saturday, September 20, in the Green Room of this same building and included many moving tributes, both spoken and sung. Mementos from Judith's life, such as paintings, awards, favourite foods, and her "Stop the War" banner, were on display and a selection of condolence letters was also read. A celebration of Judith's life will be held on Saturday, January 24, 1998, in recognition of her 75th birthday. At Judith's own request, everyone is invited to attend. Also, tentative arrangements are being made to bury her ashes under a tree on library property sometime in the spring. More information on both will be made available through The Merril Collection at a later date. Contributions in Judith's memory can be made to The James Tiptree Memorial Fund, which provides an annual award for feminist writing in science fiction.

    Women and Canadian Science Fiction
D uring the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, women were prominent as fantasy writers, producing important fantasy works in Gothic and Arabian Nights' style. The most prolific was Lily Adams Beck, who specialized in magical tales set in far-off lands. One of the earliest Canadian fantasy novels was Flora MacDonald's Mary Melville the Psychic In English Canada, women writers, such as Pauline Gedge and Tanya Huff, have concentrated on urban, high and dark fantasy. Karen Wehrstein and Shirley Meier have collaborated with Stephen Stirling in military science fiction. Monica Hughes, Francine Pelletier and Suzanne Martel have written numerous and very popular works for young people. Critics have commented on the prominent role of women in Canadian literature from the pioneer days of Frances Moore and Susanna Moodie to the present. Women have also played a prominent role in the development of Canadian fantastic fiction. The most important Canadian woman writer of science fiction is Phyllis Gotlieb, whose short stories began appearing in American pulp magazines in the 1950s.

    Judith Merril, 1923-1997
We are very sorry to report that Judith Merril died of congestive heart failure during the night of Friday September 12, 1997. Karl Schroeder, President of SF Canada, is quoted as saying, "I'm profoundly saddened by this news. I can't summon a fitting eulogy at this time, except to say that the last time I spoke to Judy, she told me how impressed she was by the generation of young people entering society today. 'People are better than they were when I was young,' she said. This more than anything, for me, exemplified Judy's gift; her eyes were fixed on the future with anticipation and wonder, even at the end of her life." Following is the text of Judith Merril's obituary as supplied by her family by email and as published in the Toronto Star on Sunday Sept 14/97 JUDITH MERRIL, noted science fiction author, anthologist and international humanist, died on Friday, September 12, 1997 at the cardiac unit of Toronto General Hospital in her 75th year. She is survived in the United States by daughter Merril Allen, grandsons Kevin and Gregg, and their families, and in Canada by daughter Ann Pohl and her family, including grandchildren Emily, Tobias, Julia and Daniel. The family is sitting Shiva at Judithís apartment on Sunday, September 14 from 9 am to 9 pm. and Monday, September 15, from noon to 9 pm. A memorial service for friends and family will be held on Saturday, September 20: 3-3:30 pm for quiet reflection, after 3:30 for tributes, in The Green Room, 110 The Esplanade, Toronto. For more information call 416-361-0616. A larger celebration of Judith's life will be held closer to the date she would have turned 75 (January 21, 1998) for the many people whose lives Judith touched.

    A Tribute to Judith Merril
    Elisabeth Vonarburg
When I was a little girl, the first stories I read were myths, folk-tales and legends from all over the world. And I knew what I wanted to be when I'd grow up: I wanted to be a hero. At the beginning of the Sixties, however, I was beginning to feel uneasy. The universe is a well-known, well-understood, nice, cosy and limited place, they'd told me, in school and out of it. Things are what they are, they said, it is like that, it has always been like that, it will always be like that. But somehow, it didn't feel quite right. Oh please, it couldn't be right? It was the mid-Sixties now, after all, something was blowing in the wind, and I was not immune. the Bummer. And she came. And we met, face to face. And that's it. Almost. Even today, I wouldn't presume on saying we are friends: we don't know each other personally that well, we haven't even met very often... Sometimes I feel that our essential link is of a somewhat rarefied nature: being Writers, you know, being Writers of Science Fiction, and being Women Who Write Science Fiction. For that, Judy, for being that unwavering, demanding, generous beacon for my spirit and for my heart, as you are also for so many others, thank you.
