Judith Merril New York, New York Canada ) was an North American science fiction author and anthologist. Merril was a writer from her youth. She published her first stories in the late 1940s. She later devoted much of her time editing science fiction short story anthologies, especially a series of popular "Best of the Year" story anthologies that ran from 1956 to 1966. In the late 1960s, appalled by what she saw as excessive suppression of anti-war activities by the U.S. government, she moved to Canada. She began an endowment at the Toronto Public Library for the collection of all science fiction published in the English language (the Merril Collection of Science Fiction, Speculation, and Fantasy).

    Judith Merril
"The Little Mother of Science Fiction"
Known as "the little mother of science fiction," Judith Merril burst onto the New York literary scene in 1948 with a disturbing story about nuclear radiation. Merril’s contribution to science fiction was summed up by J. G. Ballard (author of Crash and Empire of the Sun ) in 1992: "Science fiction, I suspect, is now dead, and probably died about the time that Judy closed her anthology and left to found her memorial library to the genre in Toronto. I remember my last sight of her, surrounded by her friends and all the books she loved, shouting me down whenever I tried to argue with her, the strongest woman in a genre for the most part created by timid and weak men." What was it like for a gender-bender who made it in a man's world fifty years ago? Merril's life was a microcosm of alternative cultural and political movements. Born into early Zionist circles, Merril ventured as a teenager into the Trotskyism of the 1930s and '40s. From there she became involved with emergent science fiction, resistance to the war in Vietnam, the Free University movement, and tuning-in and turning-on. In 1968, Merril moved to Canada with the draft dodgers, to live and work in Rochdale, Toronto’s student-run university.

Merril is well known for works such as those collected in Daughters of Earth , and equally if not better known for her editorial work. One of her best-known short stories, "That Only a Mother" (1948), dealt with issues of nuclear power and maternal love. Concern about nuclear power, weapons, and war was an increasingly common theme in science fiction throughout the late 40s and 50s, but Merril handled it with a twist that got the attention of many. And, of course, motherhood and parenting were (and still are) sorely under-addressed in science fiction. Merril was a giant among science fiction, and proof that women have always made important contributions to the literature.

Review of The Life and Works of Judith Merril
Judith Merril was born Josephine Judith Grossman in Manhattan in 1923. She married for the first time in 1940 and adopted Merril as her legal last name in 1941. In 1948, she published her first science fiction short story, "That Only a Mother," in Astounding , a story which gained her a great deal of renown. Just two years later she published her first novel, Shadow on the Hearth , one of the few novels she was to write. In 1956 she started two things that went on to have great impact on science fiction: she helped organize the first Milford SF Writers Conference, and she edited the first of twelve annual Best SF anthologies for Dell. In 1968 she edited an influential anthology of British New Wave SF, England Swings SF , and later that year she moved to Canada as protest to the Vietnam War. She made a gift of her personal collection to the Toronto Public Library in 1970, founding the Spaced Out Library (which was later renamed the Merril Collection). In 1985 she edited the first volume of Tesseracts , which has become a successful series of Canadian short science fiction. She died in 1997 at age 74.

    Judith Merril: An Appreciation
    by Robert J. Sawyer
Firs Published in The Globe and Mail: Canada's National Newspaper , Tuesday, September 16, 1997 Reprinted in: The Newsletter of The Writers Union of Canada and , Fall 1997/Winter 1998
I first met science-fiction writer and editor Judith Merril twenty years ago, in 1977. I was a high-school student at Northview Heights Secondary School in North York, Ontario, and our school SF club was planning a science-fiction convention. It's traditional at such events to have an author designated as "Guest of Honor." We all agreed that Judith was the person we wanted. At that time, she was hosting segments of the British SF series Dr. Who We wrote Judy, inviting her to attend, and, to our delight, she agreed. The truth, though, was that at that point none of us had yet read any of her work. So we began to seek it out. We were surprised by how little of it there was, and that, even then, none of it was recent. Judy had a tiny output, almost all of which was written in the 1950s: a handful of short stories, a couple of solo novels, a couple more in collaboration with Cyril Kornbluth under the pseudonym Cyril Judd.

Merril has been creating strong female characters for years; and was a woman writer of science fiction when there were damned few of them.
    Shadow on the Hearth
Displayed the preoccupation (for obvious reasons) with nuclear war that many sf writers in the 1950s had. Nuclear holocaust from a housewife's perspective. Televised as "Atomic Attack."

    "Judith Merril"
"I doubt that there is much of anything published
more than twenty years ago still being read today."
An occasional writer, noted primarily as an anthologist, working for a time as editor at Bantam Books. Judy was associated with the later group of New York Futurians about the time she met Fred Pohl...they were married briefly. Judy almost always attended, even directed, the SF writer's gatherings at Milford, PA. Merril's anthologies (56-68) of the year's best Science Fiction set the standards followed later by Terry Carr and Donald A. Wollheim. She relocated to Canada during the Viet-Nam war as a personal protest. Judy presented the Toronto Public Library with her book collection which has become the Merril Collection of Science Fiction, Speculation, and Fantasy. Merril was the given name of Judith's first daughter and she adopted "Judith Merril" as a pen name. Later, she had her name legally changed to that.
