THE ILLITERATE
By William Meredith
Touching your goodness, I am like a man
Who turns a letter over in his hand
And you might think that this was because the hand
Was unfamiliar but, truth is, the man
Has never had a letter from anyone;
And now he is both afraid of what it means
And ashamed because he has no other means
To find out what it says than to ask someone. His uncle could have left the farm to him,
Or his parents died before he sent them word,
Or the dark girl changed and want him for beloved.
Afraid and letter-proud, he keeps it with him. What would you call his feeling for the words that keep him rich and orphaned and beloved? Keith's poetry archive Keith's favorite poems

Selected Writings of William Sharp, Vol. IV , Literary Geography THE COUNTRY OF GEORGE MEREDITH The day was a van-bird of summer; the robin still piped, but the blue,
A warm and dreamy palace with voices of larks ringing through,
Looked down as if wistfully eyeing the blossoms that fell from its lap;
A day to sweeten the juices, a day to quicken the sap!
All round the shadowy orchard sloped meadows in gold, and the dear
Shy violets breathed their hearts outthe maiden breath of the year how

http://www.robertfulford.com/RonaldMeredith.html
Robert Fulford's column about William Ronald and John Meredith
The National Post , September 19, 2000) They were small-town Ontario boys, bearing the plainest small-town Ontario names you ever heard, Bill Smith and John Smith. The sons of a factory worker in Brampton, they both became successful abstract painters after studying at the Ontario College of Art. Professionally, both used only their first and middle names: Bill became William Ronald (1926-1998) and John became John Meredith (1933-2000). On Sept. 9, Meredith's death from pneumonia in a Toronto hospital brought their bizarre story to an end. It was a melancholy story, because for all their talent they were miserable and angry men, and especially angry at each other. Their mutual antagonism went far beyond the normal resentments of siblings working in the same profession. They didn't speak for years at a time, and neither of them liked hearing anyone mention the other. The art world respected their animosity: For instance, essays on Meredith rarely speculated on the possible influence of his older brother. When Robert Belton was writing The Theatre of the Self: The Life and Art of William Ronald , he couldn't pry a word about Meredith out of Ronald. (Ronald also convinced Belton that his second marriage was brief and unimportant, a position that the second wife has persuasively denied.) Belton couldn't get anything useful from Meredith, either, and the astonishing result is a painter's biography that barely mentions the existence of a painter sibling. Stranger still, when I first read Belton's book I was so accustomed to imagining the brothers separately that I didn't even find this omission outlandish.

William Ralph Meredith
Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Sir William Ralph Meredith (1840-1923) was leader of the Ontario Conservatives The Ontario Progressive Conservative Party (PC Party of Ontario) is a right-of-centre political party in Ontario, Canada. The party has been in power for a majority of the time since confederation, particularly the period from 1943-1985.
Origins
The first Conservative Party in Upper Canada was made up of United Empire Loyalists and supporters of the wealthy Family Compact that ruled the colony and opposed responsible government. Once responsible government was granted in response to the 1837 Rebellions the Tories reemerged as moderate reformers who opposed the radical politicies of the Reformers (Liberals).

Although a Conservative, Meredith was considered too radical by many Tories The term Tory derives from the Tory Party , the ancestor of the modern UK Conservative Party. To this day it is often used as a shortened alternative for Conservative A similar usage for Tory exists in Canada to describe the Conservative Party. It was also used during the American Revolutionary War to refer to British Loyalists in the colonies.
