Menander
(ÌÝíáíäñïò) c. 343-291 B.C. Chief poet of the Greek New Comedy, was the son of a wealthy Athenian, Diopeithes, of the deme Cephisia, and his wife, Hegesistrate. Alexis, the distinguished poet of the Middle Comedy, was his uncle. He was a pupil of Theophrastus as was also Demetrius of Phalerum, who in 317 B.C. had been appointed by Cassander to be governor of Athens, and with whom Menander was on friendly terms. At the begining of the 19th century all that was extant of Menander was a number of fragments, some of uncertain source and a collection of single lines of a sententious character ( ), 850 in all, and not all of them authentic. New fragments were discovered since in Egypt and elsewhere. It may be remarked that the sententious character, which he shared with Euripides is not nearly so marked in the new fragments as one might have expected from the , two of which - "Whom the gods love dies young" ( ) and "Evil communications corrupt good manners" ( ) - are known to multitudes who never heard the name of Menander.

Ulpia Oescus: mosaic of "The Achaeans of Menander"
Near the Temple of Fortuna at Roman Oescus is a building which contains a colorful floor mosaic, dated to the time of the emperor Septimus Severus (AD 193-211). In the center is a theatrical scene showing three masked participants and one man without a mask. On the white background, over the figures, is the inscription "Achaeans of Menander" ([M]ENANDROU AXAIOI; figs.1), referring to a lost work by Menander (342-291 BC), the famous Athenian comic playwright. His comedy "The Achaeans" was unknown prior to the 1948 discovery of this inscription. The existence of this play was then confirmed in 1961 by a papyrus from Oxyrhynchus in Egypt (see AR 2,2), containing an alphabetical list of Menander's works. Fig.1: The mosaic of the "Achaeans" by Menander ( after T. Ivanov 1954 Interpretation of the personages in this intriguing masked scene is still unresolved. The name "Achaeans" naturally suggests that they were prominent persons from the Achaean world. As interpreted by T. Ivanov, Menander drew his subject from Book I of the Iliad of Homer, on the quarrel between Agamemnon (the actor on the left) and Achilles (at right) over the damsel Briseis. The old man is Nestor - king of the island of Pylos, who tries to reconcile the men. The young man without a mask is Patroclus - Achilles' true friend who, after the quarrel, accompanied him to the ships of the Myrmidons.

Menander 291 BC ), Greek dramatist, the chief representative of the New Comedy, was born in Athens . He was the son of well-to-do parents; his father Diopeithes is identified by some with the Athenian general and governor of the Thracian Chersonese known from the speech of Demosthenes De Chersoneso . He doubtless derived his taste for the comic drama from his uncle Alexis He was the friend and associate, if not the pupil, of Theophrastus , and was on intimate terms with Demetrius of Phalerum . He also enjoyed the patronage of Ptolemy Soter , the son of Lagus, who invited him to his court. But Menander, preferring independence and the company of his mistress Glycera in his villa in the Peiraeus, refused. According to the note of a scholiast on the Ibis of Ovid , he was drowned while bathing; his countrymen built him a tomb on the road leading to Athens, where it was seen by Pausanias . A well-known statue in the Vatican , formerly thought to represent Marius , is now generally supposed to be Menander (although some distinguished archaeologists dispute this), and has been identified with his statue in the theatre at Athens, also mentioned by Pausanias.

Menander (c. 342 - c. 291 BC The most celebrated poet of the Athenian New Comedy . He wrote over 100 plays (the first probably performed in 321), but won first prize only eight times. After his death, however, he became one of the most popular and influential of all Greek poets. Until this century, knowledge of his work rested only on the numerous lines quoted by later authors, generally for their edifying content, and on the fact that three plays by Plautus and four by Terence were known to be adaptations of Menandrean originals. The position has been transformed, however, by the publication of ancient texts, generally on papyrus, which have been excavated in Egypt. These publications began in 1905 and still continue. We now have one virtually complete play, Dyscolus (The Bad-Tempered Man

Paul Iversen, Case Western Reserve University
Ariana Traill, University of Colorado-Boulder Since 1990, the year of the publication of John J. Winkler and Froma I. Zeitlin's Nothing to Do with Dionysos?: Athenian Drama in Its Social Context (Princeton), scholarship has greatly improved our understanding of the social and cultural relationships that informed Attic drama. The Athenian polis has been the focus of much study, either as the "real" setting of the plays (the site of the theater of Dionysus and more generally the context of the dramatic festivals) or as a fictional setting (either the site of the dramatic action, or the implied norm against which other fictional settings define themselves). It is the drama of the Classical age, however, that has been the chief beneficiary of this socio-cultural analysis; a similar analysis has not, until quite recently, been applied to the drama of the Hellenistic age, represented today primarily by the comedy of Menander. Just as late-twentieth-century scholarship on tragedy and Old Comedy has shed light not just on the plays but also on Classical Athens and on social and cultural aspects of the Classical age, so early-twenty-first-century scholarship on Menander and Greek New Comedy has the potential to shed light not just on the comedies but also on Hellenistic Athens and on social and cultural aspects of the Hellenistic age. Promising beginnings have already been made by scholars such as Adele C. Scafuro (

Call for Papers
2004 Annual Meeting
San Francisco, CA THE COMEDY OF MENANDER IN ITS SOCIAL CONTEXT
Organizers: Anne Groton, St. Olaf College; Paul Iversen, Case Western
Reserve University; Ariana Traill, University of Colorado-Boulder The overall aim of this three-year colloquium is to encourage scholarship that builds on the textual, literary, and historical work of the past and uses it to help situate Menander's plays in their social context. Such scholarship lends itself to combinatory approaches and is broad enough to encompass comparative studies of Menander with other writers. The organizers hope to tap into the resurgence of interest in Menander, particularly among younger scholars, and to entice experts from a variety of disciplines - anthropology, archaeology, art, history, philology, philosophy, religion, theater, women's studies - to examine his comedy from their own vantage points. Each of the three panels sponsored by the colloquium has as its focus the interface between Menander's plays and the society that gave birth to them. The first panel, in 2002, was devoted to "Menander and Athenian Society: The Oikos." The second, in 2003, will investigate "Menander and Athenian Society: The Polis." The third, in 2004 will have the broadest scope, "Menander and Hellenistic Society." Anyone interested in proposing a paper for the 2004 panel should submit an abstract of 500-800 words by February 21, 2003, to Ariana Traill, Dept. of Classics, UCB 248, University of Colorado at Boulder, Boulder CO 80309
