In Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man, New York, New American Library 1964 (trad. it. di E. Capriolo, Gli strumenti del comunicare, Milano, Il Saggiatore, 1999, pp. 15-30), Marshall McLuhan scrive:

Internet History - Marshall McLuhan Today, after more than a century of electric technology, we have extended our central nervous system itself in a global embrace, abolishing both space and time as far as our planet is concerned. - Marshall McLuhan, Understanding Media Summary : McLuhan made the concept of a global village, interconnected by an electronic nervous system, part of our popular culture well before it actually happened. Marshall McLuhan was the first person to popularize the concept of a global village, and to predict its social effects. His insights fundamentally changed how everyone has thought about media, technology, and communications ever since. He chose the phrase "global village" to highlight his insight that an electronic nervous system was rapidly integrating the planet, so that events in one part of the world could be experienced in real-time from other parts, which is what human experience was like when we lived in small villages. McLuhan's second best known insight is summarized in the expression "the medium is the message", which means that the qualities of a medium have as much effect as the information. For example, reading a description of a scene has a very different effect on someone than hearing about it, or seeing a picture of it, or watching a black and white video, or watching a colour video. McLuhan was particularly fascinated by the medium of television, calling it a "cool" medium, noting its soporific effect on viewers. He took great satisfaction years later when medical studies showed that TV does in fact cause people to settle into passive brain wave patterns. One wonders what he would make of the Internet?

Marshall McLuhan
Marshall McLuhan was an innovative thinker in the field of
communications. He was considered " the oracle of the electronic age"
who foresaw trends and movements in the media. Although widely
underappreciated by his colleagues, he gained acceptance by the public
for his willingness to embrace change. Many are familiar with his
book, The Medium is the Massage or the title he gave to the
world as it is becoming smaller due to technology: "Global Village."
His intuitive style set him apart and he is still remembered today as an
innovative journalist.

Examine methodically and truly every object which is presented to thee in life. Look always at things so as to see at the same time what kind of universe this is, and what kind of use everything performs in it, and what value everything has with reference to the whole, and what with reference to humans, who are citizens of the highest city, of which all other cities are like families; what each thing is, and of what it is composed, and how long it is the nature of this thing to endure which now makes an impression on me, and what virtue I have need of with respect to it, such as gentleness, humanity, truth, fidelity, simplicity, and contentment. -

    Marshall McLuhan
    A Profile
Canadian academic whose work about the impact of the mass media on human consciousness (The Gutenberg Galaxy 1952), the social effects of the motor car (The Mechanical Bride 1951), electronic communications and the 'global village', were extremely influential in the arts of the 1950s and 1960s.
    McLuhan Intro
Marshall McLuhan was born in 1911 and died in 1980. By the time of his death, he had been dismissed by respectable academicians, and he was known in the popular press as an eccentric intellectual whose day in the media spotlight had come and gone. By 1980, the transformation of human life catalyzed by television was taken for granted, and it no longer seemed interesting to ask where the electronic media were taking us. But in recent years, the explosion of new media - particularly the Web - has caused new anxieties. Or to put a more McLuhanesque spin on it, the advent of new digital media has brought the conditions of the old technologies into sharper relief, and made us suddenly conscious of our media environment. In the confusion of the digital revolution, McLuhan is relevant again. Gary Wolf, Jan 1996, Wired Magazine.

No explico nada. Exploro". Mas alguna de sus justamente exploraciones, de sus profecías consideradas en un tiempo disparates, le han dado en parte razón. De ahí que la pregunta "¿Quién teme a Marshall McLuhan?" sea pertinente y que merezca la pena recordar a este visionario personaje —

Marshall McLuhan vs. Marshalling Regular Expressions
by Andy Oram analysis or dissection but merely to reaction . We no longer preserve the neat perspective that distinguishes figure from ground; we have only a field of impressions. McLuhan's books struck the public in the 1960s (a time when figure and ground switched places for many) with the projective force he had assigned to print media. This explosion was followed by an implosion driven by the iconic force of the electronic age. His ideas gained currency through television appearances, jokes, a scene in Woody Allen's movie Annie Hall , and not least the conscious homage paid to his ideas by the advertising industry. If you missed McLuhan's ideas going out, don't worryyou certainly received them coming back in.

Click here for other writings by Geoff Peters. Marshal McLuhan – Charlatan or Visionary? Marshal McLuhan has been described as both a “media prophet” and a “pop professor” (Wilcox). Although his book The Medium is the Massage was rejected by some academics (Wilcox), it became a popular success outside the academic world. His ability to coin such phrases as the “global village” and his ideas on how media influences culture allowed McLuhan to become an icon of the counterculture movement of the 1960’s. Some scholars argue that McLuhan’s voice was even “swallowed up in the popular cultural movement” (Surette). The word macluhanisme has been adopted into the French language as “a synonym for the world of pop culture” (Playboy). But was McLuhan truly a pioneering scholar? It surely depends on how one defines “pioneering scholar”. I believe that many of McLuhan’s ideas, even if they have become their own clichés and are not wholly understood, are valuable contributions to our academic and cultural heritage by the fact that they are still discussed today. McLuhan’s writings have opened up a forum for much discussion and academic study, and have laid the foundation for an area of study on communication mediums. In an interview with Playboy magazine, McLuhan argues that “man must, as a simple survival strategy, become aware of what is happening to him, despite the attendant pain of such comprehension” (Playboy). McLuhan states that his work has the “purpose of trying to understand our technological environment and its psychic and social consequences” (Playboy).

(opens in a new window) Marshall McLuhan and David Carson: The Book of Probes Edited by Eric McLuhan / William Kuhns
Commentary by Terrence Gordon and Eric McLuhan Until now no book has explored the full expanse of Marshall McLuhan's thinking or writing. The Book of Probes is an exciting new publication that brings together for the first time a collection of his most prescient aphorisms and excerpts from his prolific life's work. It is a revolutionary book that distills the wisdom and wit of the brilliant man who was first to understand and articulate thoughts on media, privacy invasion, the information environment, and much more. McLuhan's bold perceptions, such as ''obsolescence is the moment of superabundance'' he called 'probes' and they gleam today like hidden gems in his many books, in more than 200 speeches, in his classes (especially the Monday Night Seminars), and most of all in the nearly 700 shorter writings that he published between 1945 and 1980.
Over the past couple of years Eric McLuhan, Marshall McLuhan's son, and William Kuhns have combed through all of his writings to extract and compile a complete collection of 'probes' which has become
